Only for Portuguese with a NIF
I’m in Portugal for a few days and I prefer to cycle around cities. I was looking forward to using a bike app as I have done easily in London and Florence recently. First of all The app is entirely in Portuguese and doesn’t automatically offer to translate to a preferred language (English in my case). Secondly, and pretty crucial, a NIF number is required to create an account. The NIF is a tax number only available from the tax office via submitting documents and booking a face to face appt. WTAF??! 🤷♀️ Guess the metro will be getting my money this week instead.

Very bad app
Spent 45 min just trying to give them my money. I was never able to sign up. Such a shame. But now I guess is makes sense why we saw full bike stations and very few people riding them. NOT IDEAL FOR TOURISTS!

Worst app I’ve ever used. Not using service
Bad and not trying to improve
Unfortunately there are a number of problems with the app and it seems the developers have no interest in fixing them. There is definitely a state management problem, the app constantly hangs or shows you the map without the cycle station or returns you to the login screen if you close the app because it hangs or gets stuck on the unlock cycle function and you can never actually get the bike. A lot of times I just end up walking because of the app or because of the docking station sensors. When it rarely works smoothly, it’s nice Lisbon has cycle highways where you can enjoy traveling safely.

The app keeps crashing and the money I have transferred to my Gira account just disappeared after a few days, even though I never bought any pass or used any service from gira. I couldn’t access the proof of payments either, completely vanished. Outrageously bad app!!
Can’t even register from US
App keeps saying the user already exists. Even when I try it multiple emails. Then when I try to login, it says the user doesn’t exist, invalid credentials. Can be both now, can it? It’s ridiculous. This is so buggy. I can’t believe anyone actually uses it.
Unable to sign up
I didn’t even get beyond the sign up stage. Keeps saying that user already exists, no matter what email, name or phone number I enter. When trying to recover a password, I then get a message that the record doesn’t exist. So which is it??

The website isn’t in English but the app is. I got the app to work once for a ride. When it was working, both my wife’s app and mine, if you left for more than a minute the app would freeze and you would have to relaunch. That is when it was “working”
At one point the app logged me out, and wouldn’t recognize the password I had saved in iCloud Keychain. I went to reset my password and it would not, and still hasn’t, sent me any reset emails.

Don’t bother
The app doesn’t work. Trust me on this: just don’t bother. Use Lime or public transport instead. You won’t get this to work and even if you do, it will be frustrating. This app is so bad that it’s not even worth the very appealing price of €2 for the day pass. If the developers are reading this, get your act together.

App doesn’t work, leaves you on foot
Do not invest in this, it steals your subscription money and doesn’t let you use their bikes.
The Gira app has some major problems that they seem unable to fix (been trying to notify them for the last 2 years about it) and it causes it to leave you on foot, unable to take a bike when you need it. I pay the annual fee and make sure all is in line, but then 50% of the time the app lets me down and you can’t take available bikes. It gets stuck and there is no fixing it. Basically Gira/EMEL steal your money.
