Great bank at it’s core with ethical values & transparency.
I really love Triodos as a bank for it’s amazing transparency and ethical values they really go above and beyond in that way.
The app seems to rapidly be getting better too.
Yet the £3 a month account fee can feel hard to justify as you have to pay foreign transaction fees on top of that £3 a month if you want to use your Triodos card abroad and Apple Pay still isn’t an option and I haven’t been able to find a justified reason why not, so because of both of those things, you’ll struggle to have Triodos as your only bank account.
Which as a Neurodivergent person trying to keep track of their money and transactions is a bit of a pain, as I have to have multiple bank accounts going at once and have to juggle between them, when I’d much rather put all the money through Triodos and know my money is being used ethically to improve the world rather than destroy it.
But still, at the end of the day I still love having Triodos as my main bank account even if it is awkward at times…

The dark ages.
1982 called, it wants it’s sub-par bank account back … Awful app (and clueless ‘bank’). Deeply dysfunctional: No Apple or Google pay - despite two years of “we’re looking into it”lying to customers. No in-app card freezing. No faster payments (this ‘bank’ operate what can only be described as an outdated BACS). Numerous queries necessitating you having to ‘phone them every time if you want to make a transfer outside of this company. Card and cheque transactions that go through and are held by NatWest. Unable to pay in cheques. Ridiculous untracked ‘freepost’ where anything mailed to them frequently ‘goes missing’. Their customer service team are hopeless, they don’t want to help but just get rid of you as quickly as possible (“computer says no”), presumably to make their KPI figures look good 🙄Not sure who to blame most, those working there or their clueless managers. No customer service on a weekend or in the evening. I ‘phoned one weekend to report card stolen, it became quickly apparent that I wasn’t speaking with anyone from this bank, but a third-party. They don’t even operate their debit card themselves. I was told, by someone who clearly could not care less, that they *could* block the card but that I’d be better waiting and speaking with someone at the bank on Monday - daytime, you know, when it’s really difficult to call if you work! For a STOLEN CARD! ??! Save yourself cost, time and stress, you might as well stick with a proper bank.

Functional, but lacking
I’ve been a customer of Triodos for nearly three years. The app, while clean and functional, is lacking when compared to rivals. Customers cannot control their card: set their own contactless limit, tailor restrictions or freeze a lost/stolen card in-app, for example. This is common with high street banks. While Triodos offers an SMS service to lock/unlock your card, some mobile networks won’t allow you to text short codes or ‘premium’ numbers.

Terrible app experience
I wanted to transfer my ISAs to an ethical provider but the app experience is terrible. It took me ages to take images of my passport due to the quirky angles it required. It then told me the application had been accepted and to await processing, only for me to later receive an email informing me there had been a problem and I needed to start the whole process again. When I did, it kept crashing telling me there was an error, and it also wouldn’t recognise my address, even when I input it manually. Great shame - I’m now looking elsewhere. I tried on both iPhone and iPad.

App & staff
I found nothing but clarity in dealing with the staff, visiting the Bristol branch too many times with difficulties I shouldn’t really have and phone calls, all met with professionalism at every level to resolve every issue through layers of security and protection, cooperation and greater understanding. Wow, thanks and the app is great too, now I can manage my slender budget better with better access and a new savings account making the cost of my living more affordable and not sure why everybody doesn’t bank there, but then they are ethical and community focused so that may spoil things.
I don’t know what else to say!
Gratitude

Poor example of a bank
Where do I start. A very basic app. ‘Faster Payments’ which take hours, sometimes a couple of days plus a phone call to explain what your transfer is for. No Apple or Google Pay, necessitating carrying around the plastic card when so many of us have moved on to payment by phone. I contacted Triodos about this a couple of years ago and was given a generic response to say they are always looking at new technologies. They must be the only back which does not allow NFC payments. A Digipass keypad is required for many online payments. I could go on. Ethical banking does not have to mean old fashioned, basic banking. Get with it Triodos! You give the whole ethical brand a bad name.

The app is a downside
I am really trying to stick with this bank because I love its principles and it stands out as the most ethical of them all. However, the app is so poor it is making life pretty difficult. Plus sending and receiving money takes longer than other banks, as well as the lack of Apple Pay (I also emailed about Apple Pay and got a pretty passive aggressive response basically just telling me to use my card and get on with it). Triodos, you can do better and then you really will be the best of all!

So far, it’s not good
I haven’t yet received the documents I need through the post to log in, but the beginning steps on the app to sign in show flaws already.
When you click on many of the information circles on the app, it shows Lorem Ipsum text. This is really bad customer service. I’ve not even logged in and already I’ve identified shoddy, incomplete work. Sometimes the information circles don’t loads pages. Does anyone check the app developer’s work?
It seems like the reviews about the app being behind with the times are accurate. I hope it’s a bit better when I actually log in. If it’s not, I won’t be transferring my ISA to Triodos; which would be a shame because I really want to try be more eco/ethical.

Go for it if you don’t mind ancient banking
I am an environmentalist working in NGO sector so I decided to give this bank a go. It was a good feeling to know that I could also make a difference through banking.
However, the bank is years behind what we got used to from mainstream banks in terms of online and app functionality and light years behind online banks such as Starling, Menzo or Revolut. Managers at TRIODOS bank obviously think that we are tree hugging cavemen and do not want to build a bank that we not only feel good about but also love.
Be prepared for online banking interface from 1990s and an app you cannot really do much with. Login with idiotic Digi pass so good luck if you forget to take it on holiday. No Apple Pay integration so you need to carry plastic everywhere. Transfer times are ridiculous as you need to wait hours for the money or till next day when you transfer in the afternoon. These days it should be instant. Other banks cannot verify the account so you get warnings of some spam. These are just few reasons after having this account for a few days for which I am dying to switch asap.
Good luck TRIODOS. I am keen on your mission but there is only so much ignorance and mediocracy I can cope with. You are very short sighted business.

Refreshingly clean, intuitive and functional
I recently opened a current account with triodos. I like the ethical stance and transparency around where they invest their money, but I was concerned their online banking and mobile app offering would not be up to scratch, so I was keen to evaluate the app first before fully committing to switching.
Having evaluated the app for a few days I have to say I'm fairly impressed. It was quick and easy to set up once I received my digipass. All the functionality you would expect (viewing balances on accounts, viewing and searching on transactions, payee management and making payments) is there. The interface is refreshingly clean, uncluttered and intuitive. I like the ability to filter by credits, debits and upcoming payments. The duplicate payment detection to ensure you don't accidentally pay the same person the same amount twice is also a nice touch. They have clearly thought about (and by the sounds of it much improved) their mobile app offering.
Overall I would say this is an excellent banking app which is more than enough to meet everyday banking needs, and in my personal view is more enjoyable and uncluttered to use than the mobile app from my current (mainstream) bank.
