My favorite app for building vocabulary

I’ve been learning German for a while now. I’m pretty good with grammar stuff, but I always struggled with vocabulary. I’ve tried the old standby of flashcards, both physical and with apps like Anki, but that never worked too well too well me. This app on the other hand has been very helpful in actually retaining words. It introduces words in context, and brings them back up just as they’re about to slip from my mind.

If I had one gripe, it’s at the app is iPhone only. No iPad support.

I almost love it, but…

I’ve been using Speakly for several months now, and I like it. It’s ONE of my favorite language learning apps. I typically just stick to building my vocabulary each day since I do mix in other apps, but it offers a lot of different options and I add all the music suggestions to my library. However- there is one thing I cannot stand. The speaking questions where you have to form a sentence. Sometimes it’s fine, and other times it’s SO picky it’s impossible to get past the question. I’ll be stuck on it for days sometimes because it takes the most minuscule detail into account that no one but the app would notice. Sometimes I eventually have to just skip the question which is frustrating. I am learning Spanish, and my boyfriend is a native Spanish speaker and even he agrees it’s ridiculous sometimes. He’s always on me on my pronunciation, so I know it’s not just me or he would 100% tell me. Even he answers the questions for me and it says he’s incorrect. I really wish the app wasn’t so robotic and took different dialectics into account(for example, the app uses the Spanish lisp, whereas my boyfriend is Mexican so he doesn’t use it and neither do I). Again, I really like this app but this one problem is really frustrating to me.

Probably the best language learning app

I have a lifetime access to speakly and use it to learn Russian. The last update with the AI bot covers what was previously missing in Speakly, which is the full translation and explanation of any new sentence and words. Everything is great: the speaking exercises are short and relevant, the audio is always of good quality. The podcasts are great too.

Broken garbage

Terrible. Errors from the very first screen including the subscription, text is all over the place. No formatting or structure. Can’t type, select anything, or actually answer questions… So buggy it is plain and simply unusable. Go back to beta testing babes.

One of the best language apps

I used the premium feature for a year to learn Estonian and to refresh my knowledge of Italian. It was a very useful tool though it lacks a few features for Estonian that are present for other languages. The price for one year was a bit expensive (especially for a lazy learner like myself) so I am not renewing for another year just yet. I feel if the price for a year was more reasonable this would be a great option as I tend to avoid apps which require subscription rather than outright purchase (considering the lifetime price though which isn’t bad). Good work.

Love this App

I’ve been using Speakly for a few months now and it’s great. I like it enough to stick with it, it’s great at challenging my listening and understanding skills. The speech interpretation is excellent- it catches my little grammar mistakes (e instead of a, etc) without being annoying and counting me as wrong incorrectly.
Only reason not 5 stars is the AI recording of some of the Italian when it’s read out to you on the learning flash cards. I absolutely hate it and one of the draws for this app was listening to native speakers speak slowly and clearly. Unfortunately this has gotten more and more frequent as I’ve advanced in the app and is awful. Would love to see these replaced by voice recordings of actual people and would easily make this app 5 stars (or even 6)!

Fantastic premise and useful app

Would be 5 stars however am having a minor fault with the speaking feature, often times even if I repeat a sentence perfectly multiple times it will mark the whole thing as wrong, can be frustrating as It makes me repeat things I’m actually getting correct

If you see that a specific word is marked red no matter how many times you try to pronounce it, then it might be a technical error - in such cases, please let us know at hello@speakly.me what card it is and we will look into it as soon as possible. lifetime felt like a bargain but it's just so buggy, has been like 3 years and it's still just so buggy, i just can't believe it

Best of Duolingo & Pimsleur in one app

Speakly uses a similar gamified system as Duolingo but with much more practical vocabulary & conversations. Lets just say I haven’t said “I am a cat” or “a boy and an orange” even once! But that’s not it…They also built an extensive library of story-mode speaking and listening exercises that resembles Pimsleur style of learning. This is literally best of both world. Absolutely an underrated app at fraction of a price. Hope they keep at it and introduce new languages — A friend who’s learning Japanese would love something like this!

One of the best language-learning apps

One of the best, if not the best, language- learning app out there. I was amazed at how quickly I could get pretty proficient at my target language just through the app and its method. I find the listening resources incredibly helpful and invaluable. Thank you!
