  • Cute but flawed mechanics

A lot of the features don't work reliably. For instance, some bears are able to "summon" word endings like "ED", "ER", etc. but even when you have more than adequate space for the letters to appears, sometimes only one of them will pop up. There's no way to guess which orientation they'll drop in, so you often end up wasting them. But you still have to upgrade those bears because not having the right "type" will keep you out of earning for special events.

I already have the paid version, and I can tell this is all meant to squeeze more out of me. It just won't work. Eventually when it gets frustrating enough, I'll just stop playing.

  • Smart casual game; trying to make progress is very grindy

This is a game I come back to again and again for when I just want a quick word puzzle. After a while, if you want to progress in the map, even if you play a perfect game you’ll need higher bear levels. It does become incredibly grindy and can take weeks to level up bears enough to move forward. I also dislike the tournament event, which seems to reward only the same 3-4 players over and over.

But if you play it casually and disregard campaign progress it’s still the best word game I’ve found on mobile.

  • Fun game… if you can play it

Each regular game “play” costs you 25 coins. If you’d like to pay to accumulate coins faster, that’s an option. You can watch embarrassingly bad ads for coins… when they have ads available to watch. Otherwise, this game is unplayable for more than 10 minutes every few hours. Don’t even get me started on the whole leveling up your bears thing. Only certain bears can be leveled up during certain days of the week, otherwise you’re stuck where you are, if you can even get a play in. Got a booster finally to help you pass a level? This game will purposely give you letters to that don’t create a word in the middle of the game, creating a wasted booster scenario. The creators of this game truly don’t want to make any money, nor do they want you to play this game. If they had any intelligence, they would create a purchase option for an hour of unlimited plays. Instead, they created any other purchase option, except for more playing time.

  • This is amazing!! ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ

For one thing, the graphics in this game are absolutely adorable and so well made! It makes me smile every time!
I also love the little story line, and the hidden puns and back to the future references. I also loved the first Alphabear, but this is even better!
My only complaint is the ads, but I won’t take off stars for that!
Keep making amazing games, Spry Fox! You’re my favorite game-making company, all your games are amazing!
Keep being an amazing company! ♡︎

  • So many ads it's nearly unplayable

I played the first Alphabear game religiously back in the day and was excited to see there was a second one. While the core mechanic is the same, it's a completely different game and not in the good way. I've been playing this for a couple weeks and as an example of how obtrusive the ads are, I just played for about 20 minutes and at least 5 of those were ads. Finish a level? Watch a 30 second ad. Finish another level? Another 30 second ad. And so on. There's also a very fast progression block, with the story uncontinuable without spending a lot of time leveling up your bears. I could go on - there was so much to love about the original game and so very little to love about this one.

  • Buyers Remorse

Like all of the iPhone games I’ve played, this game has pros and cons. The early levels are fun and I got pretty far over several months without spending money. I’m currently on Chapter 8 Normal and Level 3 Hard, and I’m stuck again. I’ve read the doc about advancing the campaign and I already do the suggested activities. However, it seems that once you’ve gotten to higher Bear levels, around 30-40, then it’s very difficult to advance. The cost in real $$ of coffees to level a bear up a tiny bit is insanely high, so many days all I do is level up bears while I’m stuck in the Story Mode. I do the Daily Events too but that usually just levels up useless bears (by a tiny bit). I can’t do well on Tournaments, even though I completely clear the board, apparently because I don’t have the right bears that earn enough points per 4 letter word (Alphabear stacked with Doc bear according to its Wiki). And I’ve been wanting the darn Doughnut bear, so finally shelled out real, hard earned $$ out of desperation. Close but not enough so like a fool I kept spending more - $30!!! And I still didn’t get the Doughnut bear. You’re also stuck in Special Events without that bear so I can wait five weeks then shell out another $30 to maybe get it. I’m debating just deleting the whole game in disgust.

    Developer Response

I'm not sure which missions you're stuck on, but Chapters 3 and 8 each have a particularly tricky mission covered in this webpage: https://support.spryfox.com/hc/en-us/articles/360021971434
  • My New Favorite Game

I’ve played this game every day since I got it. It’s a lot of fun and, since I love word games, it easily keeps my attention. I love the graphics and the fact that I can customize my bear (she’s currently impersonating Lady Gaga by wearing a meat dress). I also enjoy challenging myself to make bigger and better words. I personally don’t like the timed challenges because I like taking all the time I want to make the best words I can, but that isn’t the developers fault - and I do feel accomplished when I beat one of those levels. I think the rewards for beating each board are fair and make it worth it to continue playing. I especially love the “Mad Libs” style quotes at the end of each board and I collect the funniest ones to post on my Facebook as an Alphabears QOTD. I have spent a few dollars on the game to both get rid of ads and for coins to get better bears and I consider both good buys. Many thanks to the developer for making this game!

  • Even better this time around!

I enjoyed this game many years ago when I first discovered it. Then over the course of life and a few different phones it got lost and I utterly forgot about it. The new version, traveling through time, improves so much upon the original that it is almost like discovering a brand new game. Wonderful!

  • Problem

I absolutely love this game, I’ve had it for a while on my other phone before I had to switch to a new one, so I had it only had this game for some time on this phone and It has suddenly not worked, I would go on the app and it would be loading and suddenly it would kick me out. This makes me worry, I hope it’s just a temporary bug, I really don’t know what the problem is coming from but, if it is from the app could you please fix it, I really enjoy playing this game.

  • Changed my mind 👎🏾

At first I absolutely loved this game. I’ve tried just about every word game out there and the concept of alphabear was the best I’ve found. My issue with the game is similar to one many others have had where the basic story mode stops being playable. On level 3-11 Solaris, the goal seemed achievable until I played the level for over a week and couldn’t win! I deleted the app for a few months and in the last week I downloaded again hoping there were updates but sadly after 5-10 plays, I still couldn’t beat the level. Hopefully this issue will be resolved, and I’ll come back to the game!!!!
