3.7

May 4, 2024

Plinky Integration: This update adds a Plinky article action. Plinky is a wonderful new app for saving and organizing links. This article action lets you save a link to any article directly to Plinky via the swipe left menu, without opening the share sheet. On an iPad with a hardware keyboard, you can save the current article with the ⌘Y keyboard shortcut. You can also save any link inside an article by long pressing it and selecting Plinky from the resulting context menu. Like other article actions, this requires a subscription to Unread’s premium features. It also requires setting up Plinky to sync between devices. Performance Improvements: This update adds significant article list performance improvements. In service of this, the first time you open Unread after installing this update the app will take up to a minute to optimize its article database.

3.6.1

March 22, 2024

The most recent feature update added these improvements to Article Actions: Copy Article Link and View on Web are no longer considered premium article actions. Both are available with or without a subscription. They are still optional and off by default. To enable them, open Settings and then open its Articles screen. These actions are always available via hardware keyboard shortcut on iPad. The Article Actions settings screen now divides actions into two categories: Save Article Actions for bookmarking and read later services, and Share Article Actions for those pertaining to email or Messages. Article actions in context menus and swipe left menus are now sorted differently: first by category and then by name. This update fixes a crash that would occur when subscribing to feeds under some circumstances.

3.6

March 19, 2024

Unread 3.6 is a modest update with a variety of improvements. Article Action Changes: Copy Article Link and View on Web are no longer considered premium article actions. Additional Improvements: • This update improves feed discovery for odysee.com feeds. • This update adds modest improvements to the presentation of feeds on the New Subscription screen and in the Subscribe in Unread share sheet extension. • The context menus for links inside articles now have an Add Subscription item, allowing you to quickly subscribe to feeds offered by the linked webpage. This is not available in Fever accounts. • Images that are smaller than the display width are no longer centered on iPad, except when using a narrow column view in Split View, Slide Over, or Stage Manager. • This update addresses some issues around discovering feeds from ooh.directory. • If an article in a list of unread articles has been marked read but still appears in the list because it was unread when the article list was opened, it will stay in that article list after the app has been terminated and relaunched. • This update loosens the resolution requirements for a thumbnail image to appear in an article list. • This update adds a Technical Notes article describing functionality available in the Save to Unread and Subscribe in Unread share sheet extensions. • This build adds performance improvements around displaying the list of All Articles. • When Unread is configured to display webpage text for an article but webpage text is not available, the display submenu of the swipe left menu now reflects the desired setting (Webpage Text). • This update adds modest tweaks to support Inoreader’s transition from Active Searches to Monitored Keywords. The searches now appear among your feeds just like they do on inoreader.com. You can assign folders to monitored keywords, rename monitored keywords, and unsubscribe from monitored keywords just like any other feed. • This update fixes a bug that caused broken images in weibo.com articles. • The primary keyboard shortcut for the Mail Link article action is now Control-Command-I. The old keyboard shortcut works as well. Unread 3.6 requires iOS/iPadOS 17.0 or later.

(Subscription required.) --- “On the iPhone I use an app called Unread. … If you ever use the Clear app for your to-dos or shopping lists where it’s very opinionated, very limited, and very gesture-based, it’s kind of like that for RSS readers. And I like that a lot on the phone. I have a lot of muscle memory there, and I enjoy the design of it quite a bit.” — Marco Arment, Accidental Tech Podcast “Unread carries a strong history as one of the top RSS clients on iOS, and version 2 ensures that will remain true for a long while yet.” – Ryan Christoffel, MacStories “Unread is focused on eliminating chrome — it is a pure reading app. It’s like reader mode all the time, and the assortment of color themes is nicely curated.” – John Gruber, Daring Fireball --- Unread has full VoiceOver coverage. Every screen and every feature is available to users with vision impairments: • From any screen you can perform a magic tap, a two-finger double tap, to open a menu of options available for that screen. • When on an article list, there are actions available for each article in the list. Reviews of Unread

  • Navigation/UX is unintuitive, but the article viewer is 10/10

I don’t care much for the design of the app and find the UX to be unintuitive, but the reader/display of articles in the best I’ve tried out of a half-dozen or so RSS apps - it’s really freaking good!

I just wish the dev would add integration with Miniflux API, for that sweet, sweet, mark on scroll functionality that fever cant offer.
  • Almost perfect

UI and gestures are buttery smooth and I love it. Full text extraction works really well and is presented beautifully.

I would prefer some additional options for user customization, especially with the font. I do not like the default font in this app and there is no option to change it. Please update to allow for font customization! 🙏🏻
  • Nice Design

The app seems well designed, a different take on the RSS reader. I didn’t get to really give it a complete try though because I use miniflux, which supports fever and google reader APIs. Unread supports only fever of the two, and fever doesn’t support marking read on scroll. That’d be okay if there were other effective if there were perhaps other options, like “mark read all articles above” or below the selected article, but if there were such options I couldn’t find them. I’d love to give it another go if another compatible api was added.
