2.3

June 30, 2022

Version 2.3 is a new milestone update that we are very excited about. It introduces official support for the very popular WireGuard transport protocol, potentially speeding up the connection to our VPN nodes greatly. The update also significantly reduces the amount of third party resources included in Guardian while retaining the same looks and functionality. Due to this new capability we were required to set the minimum compatible iOS version to iOS 13. We are currently not planning to further increase the minimum compatible iOS version. If you are enjoying Guardian Firewall + VPN, we’d like to encourage you to rate or review our app in the App Store. We continue to deploy new servers for you around the world to provide the best possible quality of service to as many subscribers as possible. ADDED: WireGuard support. To switch to the new transport protocol please navigate into Guardian Settings -> Advanced -> tap onto Transport Protocol -> select WireGuard. You can switch back to IKEv2 which is the default protocol at any point. FIXED: Updated various deprecated system APIs to maintain best compatibility with all supported iOS versions FIXED: Properly show interactive alert on iPads in the Advanced menu FIXED: Added buttons in the "Enable VPN" interface to disable the VPN connection while the attempted connection is getting stuck due to network connectivity issues or server issues which are in process of being addressed. FIXED: Improved Subscriber Credential expiration validation logic - - - If you are a Guardian Pro subscriber and have not yet tried our beta Mac App which includes experimental WireGuard support (also coming to our iOS app very soon), please visit https://guardianapp.com/pro/ to download it and more information. Thank you very much for your feedback and sustained support. It means the world to our little team!

Reviews of Guardian Firewall + VPN

  • Pretty good

Took some trial and error but I think I’ve got it working as I want now. The biggest issue I had was that the VPN would block some apps that I use frequently and I would have to turn the VPN off to access them. I created a separate tunnel for those apps only to realize that you must use the IKEv2 protocol instead of Wireguard to do so. This isn’t optimal because the Wireguard protocol consistently has faster speeds and hopefully there will be an update for this. Otherwise no complaints.
  • Great VPN but have a suggestion

First off the VPN works well although some times it’s slow to connect it usually finds its way. That being said I think adding the switch that is on the app to the Apple control center, basically allowing quick access to turn on and off the VPN. This would be a great addition as some apps just don’t work when using a VPN or some apps need a VPN or rather you should use a VPN while using said app. Allowing the quick access would reduce the time of exiting out of an app finding the guardian app and turning on the VPN and then going back to app you wanted to use.
  • Needs a widget to show when active

Keeps dropping from the server and I’m a pro customer. Not a good look. With servers over saturated from scaling and not investing at the needed rate drops are inevitable. At the very least offer a Home Screen widget that shows when guardian vpn app is active and connected so that at least customers can easily tell.

    Developer Response

Thank you for the feedback. We would like to learn more about the reliability issues, if you don’t mind? Please use the “Contact Technical Support” button within the app, if you are comfortable doing so, as this will allow you to easily send us information and debug logs from your copy of the app. The primary purpose of our app is to protect you by blocking trackers, so if that does not appear to be happening, that would be troubling and it is entirely understandable that this might cause some frustration.
