  • Going on four years with surfshark

Have used Surfshark for four years now, fairly priced. Works out at 3 or so dollars a month and can be used on your phone and computer. App is easy to use and they are improving by adding different protection tools but there are additional fees involved. Would recommend simple and easy to use if you’re looking for a simple vpn to use for your parents or kids.

  • Good but hidden analytics settings

Good app and great service overall but it is a little suspicious that the app itself doesn’t have settings to disable analytics and crash reports. These are on by default so you have to disable these in the iOS settings under the Surfshark app settings. A bit more transparency and control on how the app is reporting on the users would be better, especially for a VPN service.

Also app managed to turn on background app refresh for itself when it’s turned off overall on my device so that might be a bug as it sucked into my battery badly.

    Otherwise recommended so far…

Hey! Thanks for your feedback. We understand your concerns about the analytics and crash reports settings. While these settings are currently managed through the iOS settings, we appreciate your suggestion for more transparency and control within the app itself. Regarding the background app refresh issue, it might be a bug, and we recommend reaching out to our support team at support@surfshark.com so we can investigate further. Thanks for your valuable input.
  • GARBAGE Do NOT Buy!

I read many positive reviews about SurfShark (probably written by affiliates), so I purchased an extended plan that included the antivirus. I had problems right away and was going back and forth with support. The problem was never resolved. Since support didn’t fix the problem I requested a refund. They refused a refund because it had been over 30 days since purchase. I purchased nearly 3 years of service, and they refuse to give a pro-rated refund. At least the VPN USED to work. Now, it is extremely slow, constantly disconnects, and ALL IP’s are blocked by major websites. If you want to search using Google be prepared to solve 10+ captchas. AWFUL customer support and AWFUL service.
UPDATE - Regarding the developer’s response. I’ve gone through HOURS of “trouble shooting” with “support”. There is never resolution, and they request I try the same things over and over again (insanity). The service becomes worse and worse. This morning, using the closest server, the speed is so slow it is ridiculous. All USA servers have bad IP’s, which makes surfing the web nearly impossible. Around 1/3 of sites completely block and others require endless captcha.

  • Worked great until recently

I really love Surfshark. It’s easy, cheap and effective. Until recently… for the last 6 months or so it’s just been terrible for most popular internet things - Gmail, Netflix, Facebook, LinkedIn etc. they all just hang nowadays. Is that expected? Surely not. I hope it improves otherwise I’ll be looking for another that doesn’t require much handling.

Hey, we're sorry to hear that you're having trouble with Surfshark recently. Some small changes can really help with this issue. • The Duality of Human Nature: Exemplary Today, Reprehensible Tomorrow—How Technology Can Amplify Both

SurfShark is my third paid VPN subscription, following two highly regarded services. I stayed with my previous providers through multiple renewals, satisfied with their performance. Investing in security and peace of mind is worth it.

However, everyone has a point where cost becomes a deciding factor. That’s how I found myself switching to SurfShark, despite my previous VPN’s serving me well.

Since subscribing, I’ve reached out to SurfShark’s support team twice and have been impressed by their prompt responses, follow-ups, and detailed video tutorials. Their customer service has enhanced my understanding of SurfShark’s features, providing me with much-needed peace of mind.

While technology can elevate us, it can also lead us astray. SurfShark’s quality and support have reassured me that my investment in this VPN was the right choice.

  • If I could give it zero stars, I would

I got Surfshark 1) to protect my data and 2) so I could switch locations and watch different shows on Netflix. Since downloading it a few months ago and paying for the subscription and all that, not only does it not accomplish the two things I downloaded it for, but it makes them worse. Since using Surfshark I’ve notice more spam emails and text messages. It was never a big problem before, I’d get a spam text here and there, but since downloading it I started getting them every day. I also found out that Netflix doesn’t like VPNs. I’m not sure if it’s just Surfshark but whenever it’s on Netflix acts like my phone is offline and I get a notification telling me to turn off my VPN to continue using Netflix. The issue is, even after disconnecting the VPN Netflix still won’t work for a few hours. So now after paying like $50 for this app, I’m left with more problems than I started with and less money. Before choosing a VPN I did some research and saw great reviews for Surfshark so I was incredibly disappointed. I wouldn’t use it again even if it was free.

Hey there, sorry to hear about your experience. Regarding the spam emails and texts, Surfshark doesn't share your data, so this could be unrelated. For Netflix, some streaming services do block VPNs. We recommend trying different servers or contacting our support team for more in-depth troubleshooting, You can find them at support@surfshark.com or via the live chats on our site.
  • No good, now uninstalled.

I bought a two year subscription for this over a year ago and whilst it worked initially for Windows OS, it doesn’t like Apple’s OS either on my iPhone 14 Pro, iPad 7th Gen and my MacBook, even with most recent updates. Examples: 1. Will never connect automatically, now applies to Win 10, even though I have set it to that, so have to constantly manually connect. 2. Will never disconnect when I am using a “safe ISP” at work with their own VPN, even though I’ve added this to the app, so have to manually disconnect. 3. Have to close Surf Shark down when I want to view my own CCTV cameras, as it blocks the app. Support no longer respond to my issues when I send them bug reports. They’ve just given up. When the software asks, “how’s the connection?” and you give it the thumbs down. It asks why, so it can send a report to support. They now ignore you and issue is never resolved. So now, even with 7 months left on my subscription, I’ve uninstalled the software on all my 5 devices and have gone elsewhere and have advised Surf Shark of this.

  • Not as good as it used to be!

Update. Have been using this for almost a year but am noticing an increasing number of retail; government; weather, and financial sites are denying me access while the vpn is on. Also a noticeable slow-down on some other sites. I now disconnect the service for all known retail and financial sites, and only use it for general web browsing, and You tube!

  • Continued to charge beyond subscription cancellation, made phone unusable

    1. I cancelled my subscription but continued to be charged. No info on website on how to change. Bot chat like communicating with a… bot. Got a “person” to help but again just generic, unhelpful information. Asked for a refund, ignored.

    2. If you need to cancel the TRICK is in apple subscriptions. Cancel there. It’s all corporate trickery making cancellation arduous, near impossible and beyond frustrating. Theft. Who would have thought my VPN would steal from me? Haha, not.

    3. I never got the app to work, fd up my phone for weeks. I’m too old for this bs clearly. Do not recommend. Worst ever.

Hi there, thank you for sharing your experience. We're sorry to hear that you had difficulties using our app and faced issues on your phone. Regarding the cancellation and refunds, in case you bought your subscription via the Apple App Store, then Apple takes control of the payments and renewal. We do not wish to trick users, this is merely a facet of working with the App Store. In case you'd like to learn more or if you ever want to give us another chance, reach out at support@surfshark.com
  • Don’t use Surfshark

My 24 month subscription doesn’t expire for another 3 months but today I got a big red alert that I can’t use Surfshark because my credit card has expired. I thought my subscription must have been due for renewal so I went in to pay for it but was very confused to see that it’s not due to renew for another 3 months. I’m going to look for another VPN provider because this is unacceptable and a breach of NZ consumer laws to restrict access to a service that I’ve paid for. It’s a real shame because up until now I really liked Surfshark and I’ve been using them for years, but if they’re going to behave like a bunch of sociopaths they can get stuffed. Did someone from the Adobe billing team join the organisation or something?

    Developer Response

Hey there, thank you for your review. The fact that your card has expired should not affect your access to Surfshark and should only serve as a warning for potential future renewal issues. If you're not able to use Surfshark because of this, please reach out at miles@surfshark.com so we could look into what might be happening.
