All Versions of Wallflower for HomeKit

2.1

March 4, 2024

Headline feature of Wallflower 2.1 is something a lot of users asked for: A way to have the display completely off at night and turn on on demand. For this Wallflower has a new setting that it does no longer prevent the display from locking, either always, between certain times, or when Guided Access mode is on. But how does it unlock then? Glad you asked: You can set an iPad or iPhone into only displaying Wallflower by using „Guided Access“ from the systems accessibility features. If your device locks in this mode, unlocking does not require authorization. And receiving notifications bypasses the Lock Screen completely, the App just turns on and does not display the notification. So if you get a motion sensor and set the home app to receive notifications, a sleeping iPad on the wall just wakes up and displays Wallflower. Magic! Also this release contains lots of bug fixes around light sensors, Weather updating, AppStore updates and others!

March 6, 2020

This update was a long time in the making, and is the foundation for the next few versions. A lot of things are new under the hood – It's faster, more flexible, more reliable and ready to be extended for the future. However: This version doesn't do much more than the previous version—but it should do everything it used to do, so there's no reason to hold it back. A few small things are new though: - More icons! - More air sensors! Wallflower now supports Carbon Monoxide, Sulfur Dioxide, Ozone and others! - Air quality is now more prominent next to the room name.

- Your guests can now join your Wi-Fi with ease: Wallflower can display a QR-code that can be scanned with most phones, so the times of spelling your guest network password to your friends are finally over. - There is a new way to use the Wallflower, and it's FREE: Without doing a purchase, Wallflower is completely usable for small smart home installations. For more complex setups a purchase is still required, but you can now try *everything* before you buy. - There is also a new purchase option: A one-time payment! It's a bit more expensive than the yearly subscription, but it remains yours forever! But note: This is just for home automation. Upcoming new features that are not related to home automation still require the subscription. - There are lots of small fixes and improvements. Most buttons look better, for example!

This is the first small post-release update, here’s what’s new: - Added a more convenient way to ask for additional symbols - Added a few symbols you requested - Fixed a crash in Settings for device groups - A humidity sensor that is part of a thermostat, no longer issues a temperature warning - Some cosmetic changes If you have feedback and suggestions, the best way to do that is via mail or the feedback option in the settings. App Store reviews are not a good place to have a conversation, so please keep use them for, well, app reviews :-)

Description of Wallflower for HomeKit

Wallflower turns an iPad or iPhone into an interactive control panel on the wall, for everyone to use. * Wallflower is optimized for running 24/7 on your wall. * Based on HomeKit: It supports lights, thermostats and ACs, switches, outlets, contact sensors (doors, windows), and sensors for temperature, humidity, air quality, particulate matter, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon dioxide, light intensity, air pressure and noise. And much more! * The interface is optimized to be looked at from far away. When it is not in use for a while, some elements are hidden and the interface is simplified. Those elements show up again, when you approach the device. When it's dark in the room, Wallflower can turn the display way down. * All sensor data is drawn into the same graph: Values from multiple sensors are merged intelligently. * If you want to provide your guest with Home Wifi, provide a convenient button where they can join via QR code. * Weather is displayed in a compact text form, including weather alerts if there are any. Detailed weather information, including charts, are just a tap away. * Along with it, you can select calendars to display, so for example your family calendar is always in view for everyone, in the place where everyone looks. This way there is a quick glanceable way to see what's up, even while walking by. * All issues for your smart home (like empty batteries, network problems, …) are conveniently displayed on the top. * There is no tracking in the app. And no extra analytics beyond the anonymized basics that the AppStore provides for the users that opted in. There's no invasive 3rd party frameworks either. We don’t want your data, your home is yours, and yours alone. * Settings are protected against unauthorized tinkering via a passcode or - if your device supports it - with your face or fingerprint. And after a while of not using it, it turns back to the main screen. * Last, but not least: Wallflower makes a great and very accurate wall clock. Wallflower requires a subscription to display weather, calendar or run with complex setups. However, you can try the home features without a subscription for one device of each kind (and 2 lights) at the same time. So you can try everything out as long as you want, and if you have a simple setup that might even be all you need! And if you're not a fan of subscriptions, there is a one-time option to pay for the home features.

Reviews of Wallflower for HomeKit

  • Camera access

I like the app but it would be perfect if we could access the cameras and or doorbell video

    Developer Response

Good news: I’m working on that for 2.1!
  • Homekit accessory cannot be reached

Says Homekit accessory cannot be reached on my iPad mini iOS 9, but it does list all my devices. Please help!

Update: Developer response was helpful. Thank you!

    Developer Response

Hi, iOS 9 is tricky, Wallflower 1.3 is probably the last app that supports it. That being said, if you see the devices listed, you should have access, but there is an issue with Bluetooth devices: iOS 9 does not know „HomeKit Hubs“, they have been introduced with iOS 10. So all devices on 10 are able to reach Bluetooth devices via a hub, and iOS 9 only sees what it can reach directly. If it‘s not Bluetooth devices, then my guess is that this has to do with updating th the „new HomeKit Architecture“. That makes everything way more reliable, but cuts support for all devices below iOS 16.4, and those devices know nothing about that. Hope that helps. If you need more support feel free to use the feedback email in the app.
  • Slow, clumsy, over-priced

Yes, my old iPad is slow, but there is no reason an app like this should stop drawing the clock and become totally unresponsive for minutes at a time. It crashes frequently. At free it is worth uninstalling. I feel sorry for anyone who paid for it.

    Developer Response

Sorry you had that experience, but you could have written me and we would have figured out together what's going wrong, as it's not common. Anyways, Version 2.0 just came out. As it's a complete rewrite you should give it a try!
