Reviews of Proton VPN

Thank You For Your Product

Thank you for your product and for replying. Most of the intrusions happened in person at Coffee Shops, etc.. I know what was being done, but I don’t know what scripts they used to get in. However, the hacking seems to have halted after doing the following: Export and save the Proton VPN Log (which should also include info. about the Proton Mail App. [Someone stole the original Log via the Files App.]) Uninstall and reinstall Proton Products. Uninstall and reinstall Tubi (While using ProtonVPN, someone was able to intercept Tubi’s Location Network.) Install and offload Apple Support, and Apple Store Apps. (Before ever installing these two Apps., they mysteriously appeared for one-second while I was configuring the Applications’. location status in Screen Time.) Disallow App Store installs and Delete in Screen Time. Disallow all sharing capabilities, disallow “Learn From This App” for all Apps., and also limit Web Content in Screen Time. Transferred all documents and Photos to an encrypted File Manager. Changed my Apple I.D. (This one is tricky but can be done, legally.) Changed my Telephone

Update: Unfortunately , after using this VPN for a few months, I discovered that hackers use it quite often as a back door. It only hide my location from those who are not near me physically.

That doesn't sound right at all. Using a VPN connection will not affect your login credentials for other apps or services used on your device. We take data security very seriously. Access to our infrastructure and Secure Core servers is tightly controlled. Proton VPN does not log, has a transparency report, is based in Switzerland, and operates in a more trustworthy manner compared to most VPNs. It is also fully open-source and independently audited. More details can be found at https://protonvpn.com/blog/is-protonvpn-trustworthy. For users with heightened security needs, it is possible to optionally: I) enable 2FA on account access; II) enable login history so that suspicious login attempts can be tracked; III) remove the linked recovery email; IV) pay anonymously with cash or Bitcoin. With the above in mind, if you have any information that your device has been compromised by someone, or was unlawfully breached, we suggest you relay this information to the proper authorities and ask for their assistance. Lastly, you can check out our threat model at https://protonvpn.com/blog/threat-model to learn more about the threats a VPN is designed to guard against, as well as the threats a VPN cannot counter.

Average to annoying

I’ve had issues with several VPNs, but NordVPN has been the most frustrating for me so far. ExpressVPN is a bit better, while ProtonVPN sits somewhere in the middle—average, but not great.

Update: I reported my issues to ProtonVPN.

One recurring problem with ProtonVPN is its failure to reconnect when I move around the house, especially when switching from my main WiFi hub to a range extender (both using the same WiFi network). Additionally, when I leave home, ProtonVPN doesn’t always automatically switch to 5G.

Sometimes, turning ProtonVPN off and on solves the problem, but often, I also have to reset the WiFi on my iPhone or iPad to get it working again.

Other issues: within the first 30 seconds of connecting, I can’t access the App Store, and Apple News only loads an offline version. And when everything says it’s working (full WiFi signal and connected to vpn). The VPN stalls and requires a restart.

We're sorry to hear about these issues. Since you've already reported them to the team, would you mind sharing your ticket number with us here? We'd be more than happy to check on your report and keep track of your case internally.

Pretty good

Well, I’ve mostly used this on my PC but recently installed it on my iPhone. Both seem to work great with very rare issues that are easy enough to fix by simply restarting the app. I do miss the feature in which users could pick from the free servers, but there’s probably a reason that feature was removed. I know it was available on PC but not sure if it was ever available on iOS. Anyway, this is a good VPN with a decent and reliable free plan. I’ve utilized proton for a while, including their email service, and I feel they do their best to provide good, secure products. The only thing I would change is the aforementioned option of choosing from the free servers on the free plan just because I absolutely under no circumstances want to use US servers ever. Overall, it’s good though and the best that I have used; I’ve used many such services including paid VPNs, and this has been the most reliable.

Thank you for your review. The default auto-connect option will connect you to the fastest available server for you. This leads to better load balancing and higher speed, which is a priority for free users. That said, you still have the option to switch to another randomly allocated server, or you can upgrade to connect to a specific server (https://protonvpn.com/pricing).
