Cicada Safari User Reviews

Enjoying So far…

But it would be nice to have an idea of how long it takes for photos and videos to be approved. I get that folks may have a lot of work going on with this, so perhaps just putting in some additional info in FAQs or something so we know how long to wait. If users feel like their efforts are just going into a void, they will likely stop tracking or find another app to use that’s more “responsive”.

Hello Lora - We appreciate the feedback! All photos are manually reviewed and approved to ensure validity of our research data. We have received hundreds of thousands of photos and videos already during this emergence, so it is taking our small research team to review and approve all photos. We appreciate your patience as we get through the photos and thank you for your help with this project!

Worthless

Tried to post pics and they just say pending approval. Wonder how many others are missing, so I’m sure the data is completely inaccurate. Too bad, as I was excited to participate, maybe 17 years from now they’ll figure it out.

Please help

This app worked fine until the recent update. I have reset my password 3 times and it never works. I can’t log in.

Signed up. Can’t access on main screen

I signed up this morning. Found my tree with five cicada skins. My local news said that no one has sighted any so far in my town.
I can’t access. The main page the button to hit after logo ing in my information is too small and can’t move the screen to login. I deleted the app and reinstalled made new password w same email. I can’t hit the button again to sign up.

Hello - Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We need a few more details in order to investigate this issue. Could you contact us at cicada.safari@msj.edu? Thank you!

Wouldn’t let me use iPhoto’s

Glitchy as can be. Couldn’t event use my iPhotos.

Great idea, not so great execution

This is a great idea to track the cicadas and crowd source data for research. However, the execution is not user friendly. You have to take photos through the app which, in my opinion, doesn’t seem to be great photo quality. When I try to upload from my camera roll for better picture quality, it says there is no Geotag. Once you finally get a good shot, it seems the photos sit for awhile in “pending approval” status which doesn’t make it much fun for the user. Perhaps they have “favorite” scouts because if you look at the leaderboard, there are folks with thousands of approved photos and I can’t even get a few through. Oh well. I’m still enjoying the cicadas on my own...

What it offers is good, but I wish it offered more

The app works great— no major lag or errors that other reviewers seemed to have, so they must have fixed those problems. The closest thing I’ve experienced is when I’ve scrolled 500+ pictures deep and it takes a little longer to load (but still not enough to bother me).

I love looking at the map to see what photos people have taken, but I wish there was more to it. Perhaps introducing minimal social media aspects such as being able to favorite photos or follow people who post near me.

That being said, I am really enjoying the app for now.

The App is.... Buggy

Okay, I had to do it.
Lots of fun, but the app keeps crashing. It also only seems to work immediately after download for some reason.
Open from Home Screen? Nothing.
Delete, re-download, then open from App Store? Slow, but functional... until a few photos later: crash.
Until the 17-year, screaming, earth-nachos get all eaten up, I will probably keep playing. It’s like Pokémon Go, but with actual insects.

Making progress

The sign up/sign in with Google or Apple feature is broken, rendering the app unusable.

Update: the developer responded the next business day to advise that the sign in issue was resolved & I was able to use the Apple login option - thanks!

Today, the current sightings map is slow to load. Also, it seems that the the app scaling is a bit large for the screen making it a bit difficult to click buttons at the edge of the screen (iPhone 12 Pro). Aside from these issues, this app is a brilliant idea and definitely worth the download. I hope to begin contributing photos soon!
