This is actually a surprisingly excellent, tightly-designed turn-based tactics game, with gameplay kind of somewhere between Advance Wars and Into The Breach. Saving everyone on the default “Intense” difficulty requires some serious strategic thinking and a thorough understanding of the game’s mechanics, especially in the final level. Mechanics are introduced well but not spoon-fed — may not be difficult to miss or misunderstand something and have a bad time.
- Audiovisual presentation is very nice. Story is minimalist but works well.
- The style of difficulty can be oppressive when you end up in a losing position. There is an easier difficulty (which I think you can switch to at any time?) if that’s a problem.
- Be aware that dog and woman only need one food every two days.
- Not a long game. Could definitely have been expanded further. Don’t expect more gameplay on reaching North City. I had my people on starvation rations for no reason.
- In-app purchases are only for Undo coins, and you get a lot for free during the game. I never paid for anything, used Undo quite a bit and had 49 left over at the end. You can always restart the level for free.
- I used undo when anyone died so not sure what the balance would be like after a permadeath. Without trying it it sounds kind of impossible.
- Don’t forget to use pushing and pulling for a lot of things.
- Some way to know whether you found all the secrets after completing the game would be good. The pharmacist’s license didn’t seem to do anything so not sure if I missed something.
Anyway, very pleasant surprise. Feels more like a [short version of a] classic tactics game than something you expect on mobile.
