Filmic Firstlight User Reviews

The BEST and most underrated photo app EVER

No other app matches the quality of Firstlight’s film emulations and grain. A joy to use for those who appreciate good UX and analogue film emulations. Also thanks for fixing the most annoying issue. Format is now retained between launches.

Add a Filter-Save function!!

Great app, workflow, etc. Two downsides/feature requests though: 1) ability to set a default filter that is enabled when the app launches would be a huge time saver. 2) many filters feel a bit extreme, kinda longing for the less obtrusive but film-genuine filters from RNI here. But I love the grain effects, UI, and Leopold filter on this and it’s become my go-to shooting app.

Great love to see this feature in update

This is an exceptionally easy and versatile implementation of the iPhone’s camera. I would love to see user-customizable aspect ratings, or at least the addition of 7:6 and 65:24

Good app & no bugs that I’ve found!

Incredible! But needs WB control

I really like this app a lot, really no complaints except that it has no white balance control. If we can get white balance control that would terrific!

Little improvement over native app

Semi-pro user here. Cons: App lags in focus, lens switching. Lacks easy access to other tools that native app has. Portraits can achieved but takes more effort. Aperture priority missing.

Pros: focus peaking, ISO and shutter priorities. But overall, just another camera app—not a replacement.

Only needs a couple improvements

This is easily my favourite camera app, the film and grain simulations are some of the only accurate representations I have gotten on any digital camera with pre production.

However I do wish you could create your own presets for quick access. For example a black and white + high grain preset for quick access, or a gold with low grain etc. I also wish you could film with this app but I know that's not the intended use

Good but...

I really like the app but being a photographer and wanting to work with the original raw files, there is a few set backs compared to FiLMiC Pro. There is no way to export files out as a original "raw" DNG file. Instead it exports as a JPG+RAW as one file which cannot be edited by a program like capture one.

Secondly, I would love to see full manual control to Shutter Speed and ISO not one or the other.

Lastly, no white balance control...

If all 3 of these issues were addressed in a quick/easy and fast way to access and change without feeling clunky. I would absolutely love the FiLMiC suite of apps!

Forgotten by Filmic

Lots of potential here but the app has been mostly forgotten. I paid for the subscription a couple years ago and in that time First Light as become free, plus we’ve not had any major updates. Sad.

First Light could be so amazing - wireless tethering, custom looks, PRORAW, maybe even partnerships with flash manufacturers to control lights wirelessly like Prophoto C1.

I emailed support a year ago and was told some good stuff was coming. Maybe they need a few more years…

No zoom??

I just downloaded this app because I love fimic pro but I've come to discover that I cannot for the life of me find how to zoom in. I have no idea if this app just doesn't allow you to or if I'm incompetent. regardless, all the features are amazing!

Don’t buy for serious photography

I like the filmic pro video app but filmic pro firstlight is a stripped down version of the iphone camera app with “filters” and focus peaking. You cannot control white balance, iso and shutter simultaneously, can’t change f stop, etc. I think in their attempt to make a simple interface they made a overly simplistic camera app that is not better than the stock iphone camera app. You can apply film grain, vignettes in post and don’t need a “camera app” to apply them at the time of capture. That is the main feature of this app. It seems harsh but this was a total waste of $8. Please do not make the same mistake.
