Don’t bother upgrading.

I’m holding onto the old app until they kill it off. This app removes all functionality the old app had. Want to browse locations to trip plan? You have to download that states map. Want to check another? Have to delete the old map and add the new location. Such a pain. I don’t need downloaded maps 100% of the time. At this point the developers have effectively killed their app instead of improving their already well known and well liked app

Hi, thanks for your feedback. Sadly it wasn´t possible to simply upgrade our old app. It was built on a platform that isn´t supported any more, so there was no other way than build a complete new version with a new look and new functionalities, like offline maps, amenity filters, adding favorites, quick check-in and many more. We wish we could remain completely free forever, but after 10 years of attempting to run iOverlander that way, we know it is not possible. Our original app is still free and without ads, we will keep it available as long as possible.

Version 2

I am a dedicated user of and contributor to iOverlander. So much so I was offered and accepted the version 2 upgrade.
I am sticking with version 1 until it is shut down. Version 2 is clunky and awkward and now has started to freeze my phone. The screen is stuck on a check in.
The features I dislike are the absence of Google maps routing with one simple click. Now I have to copy coordinates and use those which isn’t the end niche’s try of but is clunky.
The need to download countries is a pain. If you don’t download a country you can’t explore it. Again, not a deal breaker but clunky.
The screen freezing is unacceptable.
I hope desperately some new similar app will come along as iOverlander has lost the plot, possibly through excessive popularity and when version 1 disappears I shall be extremely sad.

Hi, thanks for your feedback. Can you please reach out to support@ioverlander.com? So that we can look what causes the freezing screen? Thank you! We know this new process downloading POIs is not perfect, but this change was required because of the massive amount of points iOverlander has around the world. Our old app faced many challenges because there were too many points to load, and because the points needed to be available offline

Unable to run

As other review stated I downloaded and subscribed but have no access to downloaded maps etc. I’m going to cancel before I pay as I’m unable to try any of the features

Hi, we gave away thousands of free upgrades for our top contributors. Maybe we missed you? Please contact us at connect@ioverlander.com so that we can check. Thank you!

Terrible. Whoever owns this has lost the plot

First I want to address the new sloppy app. When you have to "re-register" they ask you for your website URL with an example listed in the small box. When you type it in, in the way they suggest in the example , it then makes you have to put in HTTP, or HTTPS. Even though, that is NITA illustrated in the example in the box. Sloppy sloppy sloppy. But the sloppiness continues.

And this leads to my next point. What a silly silly idea this was to have a second version.

WE are your data sources.

WE are the ones who give you the information. This is crowd sourced!!

And now you're trying to make me pay so I can contribute? You are trying to make me pay so I can read other people giving you FREE contributions?

Oh my gosh. The gall you people have. You've lost the plot

Without all of us Overlanders, you would have ZERO data points to sell. And now you're forcing me into a plan so I can read what other people like me have contributed?

Worse, my old contributions are gone. I had plenty. Now they're gone.

Whoever you are, you have messed this up so bad. You almost look like allstays at this point that's how bad it is. You've destroyed a great community. And all the goodwill we had for what you were doing.

I think it's time for a mea culpa, and a reset.

Otherwise you will lose us all forever. And in the process, you will lose your business.

Thank you for your feedback. We would be happy to check your contributions, for sure they aren't gone. Both apps sync. Please send an email with to connect@ioverlander.com, so that we can clarify. The decision to offer a paid subscription was out of necessity to sustain iOverlander. We wish we could remain completely free forever, but after 10 years of attempting to run iOverlander that way, we know it is not possible. Our original app is still free and without ads, we will keep it available as long as possible. In addition, feel free to use the free version of this app, it is still completely usable. It just limits offline maps and place downloads because both of these are large expenses to iOverlander. Thousands of free upgrades have been given to our top contributors, and we hope to continue this program to give free upgrades to our top contributors every year. But please know that 97% of our users contribute nothing. And, a lot more goes into keeping our app alive then just points and check-ins, which unfortunately cannot be sustained on donations alone. Can’t see how it’s worth it

I’ll stick with the old version the only benefit I can see with the new one is offline maps which is not worth $100 a year.
Or though iOverlander is great it's not worth that much not when there are over apps for free camp sites and google for everything else. In fact, at least with Google, you can download local offline maps for free.

Shame it's so over priced as the old version is great. I’ll be deleting iOverlander2 from my phone as it’s useless with out paying for it.

HI, thanks for your feedback. With the new version we are providing a lot more new features, like adding your favorites, quick check-in, amenity filters, a Spanish UI. Maybe you wanna give us a second chance? Thank you!

Do not update app

Updating app totally clears the map and no filters work.

Response from developer

Hi, this doesn't sound right. To view all the places please press the red alert sign in the top right corner, close to the words "no places found". The download is required because of the massive amount of points iOverlander has around the world. Thanks for trying!

Useless!

There is absolutely nothing on the map. I mean, literally, it’s just a map, no markers for a single thing, no campgrounds, established or otherwise. Not sure why this app exists. Don’t waste your time.

nah u guys F'ed up big time

what even is this?? i was excited for a new app. there are no useful new features. just ads on an app that was ad free. it's not easier to use, the buttons don't even work!! i would never ever use this app. i would rather use RV parky and figure the rest out on my own.

you should be able to filter for things like amenities, pets, paid or free locations, and big rigs. the app should have a smoother UI. this is so bad. i love the original ioverlander even if it's ugly and hard to navigate sometimes. don't do this. you're screwing so many people with this but mostly yourselves. if you think ppl are gonna put up with this ur crazy.

Response from developer

Hi, thanks for your feedback. But this doesn't sound right, the new app provides a lot more options to filter, even the amentity filters you mentioned. Please send an email to connect@ioverlander.com so that we can assist you using the app. Or visit our YouTube Channel, we made a bunch of Videos to explain the new handling https://www.youtube.com/@iOverlander Thank you!

Why would anyone subscribe to this?

Seems it has less features.

Response from developer

Hi, thank you for your feedback. We know the handling of the new App is different to our Legacy Version. But we provide a lot more features, including offline maps, amenity filters, mark your favorites. We made a bunch of YouTube Videos to explain the new stuff. Ads affect the experience terribly

It feels pretty crappy when an app, that is so reliant on user input for their content, changes course in such a way that iOverlander has. The content was built using free input from users. I do not recall iOverlander offering to pay me for my insights on locations I have visited.

In general, charging for the app is not a problem. It is the new fee structure that is. This is a seasonal app for most folks. Charging a subscription is what will keep me off the app.

I’d advise a $49 one time fee. When I think about the apps that I do pay for that have a similar fee, they are apps that have high content acquisition costs and are apps that I use about 300 days per year.

For folks who remain in free mode - The large screen blocking ads seemed to be reserved for the worst of apps, and I am saddened to see that this app is employing them now. They have constant running ads at the top of the screen with tiny navigation buttons next to the ads….in addition to full screen ads. The full screen ads are the type that take a minute to find the ‘close’ button.

Hi, thank you for your feedback. We are continuously working on improvements and hope we can provide a better solution for the full screen ads soon. We hear you! Our paid subscription is a bit different and costs a bit more than other travel apps. Check out this article for more details on why:https://ioverlander.com/whats_coming
