  • Forced to download maps; only one region at a time on free

Really frustrating that we cannot look at the maps even when connected to internet, unless we download the region. When working on a road trip plan, you have to un-download one state in order to download another state unless you upgrade to pro. Makes the app basically un-usable without pro, and forces you to take up device storage to use the map even if you have internet connection. Really dumb. The old app would be basically perfect as is if you could just filter amenities and save favorites.
  • Worse than the original

This is way worse than the original. You can have the map from 1 state for free than you have to pay a very bloated annual fee to get the rest. Not worth it. I will use the old one until it is not supported while moving the data over to google maps. But I am not going to pay $100 per year to find our where water is especially since this is community gathered information and the developers are not sourcing the info.

Yes, adding points is a big part of our app, and we are grateful for the contributions and made sure that our top contributors all have free upgrades! But the time and costs related to maintaining and developing our app and website, not to mention moderating and cleaning our database, greatly exceeds the time and effort to add checkins and places. We had no choice but to offer a paid subscription in order to sustain our app and keep the infrastructure running.
  • Deleting app after 5 years of use

This was always my go to map for my roadtrips around the US. I’ve depended on this app for finding safe places to camp and sleep over night. This new update is insane. I should have read the reviews before clicking update 😭 right before I travel across the US from TX to MT. What a shame. The fact that you can only download one map at a time without them charging Netflix prices. Ugh.

Thank you for your feedback. The decision to offer a paid subscription was out of necessity to sustain iOverlander. We wish we could remain completely free forever, but after 10 years of attempting to run iOverlander that way, we know it is not possible. Our original app is still free and without ads, we will keep it available as long as possible.
  • Furious!

I’ve been using iOverlander for a few years now and got a pop up on my app to install the new version. The 2nd “improved” version is a JOKE! I have never had a worse experience with an app. The new version is just a way to sell advertisements. In fact it’s even worse than that. I got a white screen that I couldn’t get out of and ended up just deleting the app.
Jesus, iOverlander is a great app that’s been ruined. DO NOT INSTALL THIS APP!
Let me know when you get this right.

  • Useless

I have used the legacy app for years. This new version does not work at all on a new iPad. The map will not show a single site. The legacy version shows sites and is much easier to use.

    Addition:

Don’t upgrade. The new version of the app takes the database the was built from community input and charges for it! You have to download the data separate from the app itself, not included. And you have to put up with advertising on the app. Find something else or stick with the original version.

Hi, you have to download the places by clicking on the red alert sign in the top right corner. Next to the words "no places found". Thank you!
  • OG app way better!

Why fix what isn’t broke? Aside from being able to easily access favorites in the new app and a slightly better “look” the functionality is terrible. Having to download areas, several steps to get where you want, annoying ads, and expensive paywall is not a good 2.0. I’d rather pay for the old app and just add favorites to it. This introduced more problems than it improved. Not a good step!

Hi, thanks for your feedback. Sadly it wasn´t possible to simply upgrade our old app. It was built on a platform that isn´t supported any more, so there was no other way than build a complete new version with a new look and new functionalities, like offline maps, which are important for a lot of our users.
  • amazing Improvement!

$100 a year is a small price to pay for access to a vastly improved app with many needed additional features. finally favorite spot saves! How many free wild camping nights at epic spots has iOverlander pointed you to? think about the average CG fees you have saved and how many amazing spots you would never know about. this is a must have app and with the price.

Guyya, we are grateful for your feedback and are happy when someone realizes how much work is behind the operation of our app. And above all, that ordinary people are trying to make life a little more comfortable for all travelers.
  • Subscriptions are way too expensive

I understand the need to bring in revenue to support the app, however, $99 a year is just too much to obtain essentially the same functionality as the original app + favorites. I think a $99 lifetime and a $4.99 monthly for unlimited would be more reasonable and I would be willing to make a purchase.

This app is literally charging almost as much as a Netflix subscription for way less content and for most people relatively infrequent use.

The pro subscription seems pointless as it’s still quite restrictive and annoying. Just offer unlimited with more reasonable pricing and it will probably get more than 2 stars.

Thanks for the feedback. Our paid subscription is a bit different and costs a bit more than other travel apps. Check out this article for more details on why:https://ioverlander.com/whats_coming
  • Worst app revision

I can’t login to my old iOverlander account. Password reset request, no emails from them in my inbox. I can register a new account because my email is already in their database. First welcome prompt shows up and you can’t read the text on the buttons. Annual price is pretty steep especially when their target audience is looking to save money for free over night camping spots? I don’t mind the price to support them, but it seems like they’re being a little out of touch with the spirit of dispersed camping…

  • Just sad, especially when reading the developers responses!

Curious where this app would be without all the people actually adding the helpful data. It sure wasn’t the “developer”. Try a lifetime subscription or something more reasonable. Did you forget we are boondockers, overlanders, ect. We are not tourists looking for the next best thing or app. Simple works….keep it that way.

Oh, and I read all about why the change and yada, yada, yada….maybe try allowing a few states at a time instead of just one….jeez! Talk about a slap in the face!
