Love!

Ignore the negative comments! Yes back then is the same as lifecake and yes you go have to pay to have a decent amount of storage (over 1GB) but it’s not mega bucks it’s an affordable price and the app is great! How much more would these people be moaning if the app had just closed down and they weren’t able to use it anymore! There is nothing stopping anyone from going and purchasing a different app if you are unsatisfied with the new one but I personally will continue to use and love it the way I always have for many years.. we have sever family members connected to our account and they also love it! Thank you for transferring everything over too! Saved a lot of issues!

The only issue I’m having so far is I haven’t been able to add family to the new app as they aren’t receiving the email? If I could get some support with this that would be appreciated.. many thanks

please email us to support@backthen.app and we will try to solve this issue for you

Thank you

Thank you for saving what once was Lifecake! It was our favourite app and it’s so sad it had to close. I really appreciate your hard work getting this one up and running! One suggestion for the future- it would be amazing to be able to compare siblings at the same age by selecting photos of each of them from their stream!

Simple and easy to use

Back Then is pretty much the same as Life Cake and transferring photos between the two was easy. Like Life Cake, you get an amount of free storage but can pay for additional. Some people seem to think they’re entitled to use this service for free. Back Then is a business and needs to make money somehow. I appreciate that the company doesn’t sell my information to make money or bombard me with ads. I’m happy to pay for this service. I’m giving the app four stars because the individuals I’ve invited to Back Then, who also had Life Cake accounts, are unable to join. Please let me know if there’s a way to fix this.

Extortionate!

As per other reviews I’m staggered by this move. The ‘self funded’ new app is identical to the old Lifecake app so whilst it may technically be a new company, it is only to get more money out of you as they are clearly linked.

I’ve been using Lifecake for two years and migrated to backthen when I opened up
Lifecake and could no longer upload photos. Once the migration was complete, I was told I now had to pay $7.99 a month! Thats more than an HD streaming movie subscription! It’s such a great app but I’ll be finding an alternative this month and shutting down my account.

What a rort.

Life Cake for Profit

This last-minute switch to Back Then is disappointing. I went ahead and created a Back Then account after being prompted by Life Cake, and told that my photos and videos could be easily transported to the new platform. I found out they could indeed be easily transported... FOR A PRICE. I’m truly disappointed, and I feel like the app developers were not forthcoming with all of the information. Needless to say, we’ll be deleting our account which is so disheartening. Our baby’s entire existence was chronicled on life cake so that our relatives all over the world could enjoy sharing his special moments with us.

Painful

Be warned anyone transferring from Lifecake - you can transfer your data/pics over (it looks exactly the same) but your invitees are NOT transferred. A night of contacting everyone again for their email addresses awaits me! What an oversight. Poor form folks.

Migrating contacts headache

I appreciate the ability to migrate all of my photos, videos, likes, and comments. I also don’t mind paying the $5/month as I was a paying member of Lifecake. What I’m frustrated with is my family not being able to accept my invite. I have older and younger family members having the same issue and receiving the same error message. I’ve migrated all of my photos and paid the $5, now get my family members on there!! My daughter has great grandparents and grandparents that rely on this to give them something to look forward to every day. I’m fine with waiting for prorated refunds and kinks in the program to be worked out, but I’m not fine with my family members not being able to join in on my album.

Same as Lifecake

We enjoy using Lifecake as do our family. All the same features are there, still sad that you have changed the name not as fun anymore.
Would love to be able to choose the two photos that get compared in the treasure if you can make that happen!!

Response from developer

When the decision was made to close Lifecake, the original founders decided – rather than let the memories in Lifecake fade away – to quickly build an independent new app to replace it. BackThen. The company is 100% owned by the founders, with no association to Lifecake's parent company. Lifecake have assured us that pro-rated refunds are already being processed.

BAIT & SWITCH...don’t fall for it, Lifecakers!

If you’re looking at this app as a result of LifeCake’s 11th-hour notification that they are pulling the plug as of yesterday: do not migrate to BackThen, which is essentially a pay service, as the storage and upload limits on the free version are laughable. Also limits the number of users of an account to 6. “Sorry, cousins: grandparents first!”

It is unconscionable on the part of Lifecake, and its corporate parents, to give such short notice to users, especially at this time, when families are being kept apart by quarantine. And then to say, “Oh, we’re holding your content hostage to this new landlord; pony up or lose it!” Why would you choose to add to the woes of the world during a pandemic by pulling the plug on many families' primary, and in some cases, sole means of staying connected?

Bottom line: RESEARCH OTHER (FREE) OPTIONS. And call out Canon and BackThen and Lifecake on their greed and shady business practices.

There are no limits on amount of users you can invite.

Seamless Transition

Firstly, I’m so glad that it isn’t the end Lifecake per say, although a different name. To our relief the this new App is designed and managed by the same team that developed the original Lifecake App.

The migration from Lifecake - BackThen is truest seamless. A little frustrating the annual subscription doesn’t move across, especially as we just paid for another year with the original app.

However, at £3.99 (hopefully annual deal will be available soon) it’s well worth the money for keeping the memories of our little one and for all our selected family and friends to see within the need to share on social media sites.

However, yes there is an however!! The new app does not support web browsing and users can only use Mobile apps to register and view the images. This is an issue for some of our older generation as although they are web savvy and use laptops they do not use mobile devices. Therefore, as from from June will not be able to see the next steps in their grand and great children’s life’s. we truly hope this is something that is implemented.

One other really useful tool would be the ability to download all the uploaded content at anytime, in time and folder order so we can keep our own backup.

If the above can be implemented to the new app as part of future development. This would easily be a 5 star review!
