Description of Fontself

Create real vector fonts in seconds, and use them anywhere (Procreate, Photoshop, Mac, PC, etc.) It’s really easy: just draw letters & enjoy typing with your custom typefaces. Fontself turns your alphabet into a font file you can install on any computer. Fontself is a font creation app that allows you to draw handmade fonts, export them as OpenType files. Key superpowers: - Vector brushes (Brush, Pencil, Pen, Qalam reed pen & Marker) - Pressure-sensitive brushes (via Apple Pencil) - Export OpenType font files (.otf) to use on any Mac or Windows PC - Preview in real-time sample texts as you draw - Showcase your fonts by viewing or sharing customizable layout templates - Save hours of tedious work with automated spacing & kerning Streamlined workflow: - Draw & generate vector fonts in a single app - Export your fonts straight into Procreate to use them on your designs - Manually upload fonts for instant use on Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator or else Yes, it’s the hard truth: making actual fonts is usually a painful process which requires countless hours learning complex software, outstanding eagle-eye type design expertise, and working forever as a 14th century monk on arduous tasks like spacing and kerning your glyphs. But at Fontself we aim to bring easy font creation to all, and thus provide you with an enjoyable app so anyone can embrace this cool medium: typography. Fontself is powered by our advanced vector-brush engine developed from scratch and crafted with passionate indy designers & developers to match calligraphers and letterers demands. You will also benefit from over 20 years of expertise in this field, because our goal has always been to truly democratize type-making. We call this #Typocracy :) The Fontself app on iPad is still a young work-in-progress so we will improve its features based on your feedback. And we plan a lot more typographic fun in the months & years to come. Yeah! We hope you enjoy this app: if so, please leave a review, and in any case we are eager to see what you will create, and to learn how it can better suit your needs. ... and Welcome to Typocracy ;)

Reviews of Fontself

  • I have made four fonts in the last two weeks

If you have ever drawn your own font in procreate, you can use this app. It's super easy to use even as someone who is left handed!
I only have two things I would change:
    1) this may just be inexperience, but I don't know how I would use this app to make a grungy font, since the tools all correct curves and edges to some degree.
    2) I would love to see more brushes
  • Best Font Creation App!

I'm in love with this app—it's sleek, intuitive, and packed with useful features. Just as Procreate revolutionized digital art by offering accessibility alongside a stunning visual user interface experience, I firmly believe Fontself is poised to do the same for lettering and typography designers.

I hope in the future that I will be able to create alternative characters and ligatures. I also hope to be able to group font families and sign my fonts, that would take this to a whole new level. :)

    Developer Response

Thanks a lot for the kind words. Font infos and more improvements are currently in development, so get ready for a cool update next. Some features like alts & ligs will follow at a later stage, first setting up solid foundations ;)
  • Great and Free!

After a couple hours of use, I’ve found this app to be a super helpful tool for any aspiring font creator. It has great tools and workflow, the interface seems incredibly streamlined, and I have the ability to add more characters to my font than almost any other free font-making service.

Reading through some comments, I found a lot of complaints about pricing. However, after exporting many fonts, I have found no such paywall. Maybe the developers have changed their app, but my experience with this app has been an amazing and completely free.

If I had to critique anything, it would be the stabilization and shape making. As a devoted Procreate user, I am typically pampered with stabilization settings and strengths. However, my drawing in this app often came out wavy and in need of fixing. Of course, there are always the great vector editing tools to assist me with my jittery drawing, but this often came at the expense of a lot of time fiddling with settings. It’s the same story with shapes, they just took so long to make. With the incredible workflow this app typically has, this stood out to me.

Then again, font-making is a time consuming project, and I still heavily recommend this app even with its small struggles. It is a great tool for any consumer and something you should definitely try, especially for being as free as it is.
