  • A superbly designed AAC app

This app is intuitive and packed full of rich pre-programmed language that cannot be deleted so meddling hands who think they know better than expert AAC users and the developers who collaborate with them cannot hide or remove important words they think the person they are supporting won’t need. This app limits gatekeeping of language - yay! We love that this app gives people of different ages who need AAC the chance to explore, experiment with, and use such a broad vocabulary. Too many people do not presume competence. This app assumes that everyone needs and has the potential to use an enormous number of words - and the only way to learn to words is or have access to them… all the time. I love the search function and how you are supported to find and learn the pathway for words you can’t find on your own, I love that you can still add more words to personalise the app to suit individual needs and to keep expanding vocabulary further. The companion app to coach communication partners is superb. And the availability of this app to everyone in the AAC users life is groundbreaking yet so needed. Kudos to AssistiveWare on the creation of this brilliant much needed app.

Hi DDWA Consultant and thank you for your awesome five star review! We love when our customers take the time to list what they love about the app and you have mentioned so many things - limiting gatekeeping and presuming competence with access to words are a huge part of the Proloquo philosophy and it makes us happy that they make you happy! And thank you for your extra special mention of our companion app, Proloquo Coach.
  • Not actually free

Honestly really exhausted with apps that seem free to download only to tell you to buy a subscription for it. Waste of time.
  • Beware

Love the design and affordability of the app. However, my child does NOT need access to swear words or gender/sexual orientation topics. You’re stuck with whatever words they’ve deemed “most important” and you can’t change it. No thank you. I’ll find an app that allows me to customize it age appropriately for my child.

Hi kyria8490. Thank your for your feedback. We are glad to hear you love the design and affordability of the app and we are very sorry that you are offended by the swear words and gender / sexual orientation topics. However, we understand that swear words are a sensitive (yet important) part of communication and that Proloquo only contains three mild swear words that were selected because they are allowed for all hours and all ages on US public/network TV. If you would like to discuss these vocabulary inclusions further, please email our team at support@assistiveware.com. Thank you!
  • Outstanding AAC app with simple visual interface

Extremely easy to learn to use and model use of AAC app - when compared to other AAC apps. The simplicity and elegance of the visual interface means more people around the AAC user are happier to undertake learning and using it. Plus it offers a very powerful vocabulary and many great literacy support features.

Hi jubilation111 and thank you for your glowing five star review. We really aimed to make it easy to pick up and use Proloquo and it makes us so happy to hear from customers who share how easy they find it to use and model. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.
  • There should be a Label only option

I finally got onto proloquo, but there’s no text or label only option, maybe for people to use it more, you should add a label only option because not everyone wants to see symbols Shoved in their face

    Developer Response

Hi Adelaide, I'm so sorry you are disappointed. We developed Proloquo so that it doesn't have as many options to make it easier for those without a lot of AAC experience to use. If you need something that can be customized, we have other options that are text-only, and you might find you like those better. :-)
  • Paid accessibility features are ableist

Please don’t make the disabled pay such an expensive subscription for accessibility features, we’ve got enough on our plates.

    Developer Response

Thank you for your feedback. We understand your concerns regarding accessibility and affordability. Our aim is to balance the need for a sustainable, continuous development and support with affordability. We also offer 5-year plans that are suitable for insurance. Please email us at support@assistiveware.com if you'd like to chat about this more. :-)
  • It won’t let me sign up and subscribe!!

I am an autistic who is trying to use an app like this to communicate, I’m verbal. But my mom wants me to use apps like this to refrain me from blowing up and saying ugly things. Do not discriminate people who are higher functioning than people who are not non speakers that would want to use this app!! Fix it!!!

  • How is this equitable?

Trying to find a program that grows with my daughter’s widening vocabulary has been a tough one. I have found others similar to this but that have no training unless you purchase their device for 1000s of dollars. She currently uses proloquo2go and was offered a few months free. Within three hours ( after my correspondences were answered, which is one of the only advantages of this app) we knew this isn’t it either. There is no way to change to larger font or make the icons smaller (there are some who are transitions away from icons as they master their aac devices) , no way to change the contrast, and the font size in communication bar when in typing is near 10 size font. Not only is this difficult for the visually impaired but with no option to toggle to a different language already offered by proloquo2go, it’s not equitable . Along with the subscription model- which is a high cost even when you look at the yearly subscription versus the one time cost of others- state programs that offer funding will not accept this as this is a subscription. Even your 5 year subscription is a subscription, those of us who rely on state funding to help our children access their basic needs of communication are being pushed out of a new opportunity to expand their communication. However, in this case it has several limitations that aren’t addressed anywhere and fortunately this was a free month. Please look back at your design to make this better for all to use.

Hi mzdnsy55, we are very sorry to hear about your disappointment with Proloquo and your daughter’s issue accessing the app. However, we appreciate that you have taken the time to share your review and honest feedback about Proloquo. You are right; Proloquo is not intended for people with vision or motor issues. For these users, Proloquo2Go is a better choice because of its customization and access options. Our AAC app guide (please see: www.assistiveware.com/aac-app-guide) can help people find the right AssistiveWare AAC app for their needs. Regarding additional languages for Proloquo, we want to perfect the basics of the app first before we decide on what languages we might offer. Please also know that Proloquo is a subscription as it offers a more sustainable business model to offer 24/7 in-app AAC expert support, regularly updated articles and lessons in Proloquo Coach, continuous updates to the app on compatible devices, and improvements to the words and layout of the Crescendo Evolution vocabulary. Finally, because many schools, insurances, and state organizations cannot purchase app subscriptions, we offer licenses (please see: www.assistiveware.com/products/proloquo-licenses), including 3 and 5 year licenses, for Proloquo. Note, these are not subscriptions since licenses do not auto renew and can be purchased through several payment options. In many countries, disability needs are re-evaluated by insurance systems every 5 years. Then, funds becomes available again to get a new system. This is not only connected to the needs of the user (which might change over this span of time) but to the device. Dedicated devices, as well as iPads, have a limited shelf life. They age, and batteries tend to wear out. This is why we designed the 5-year license to align with the insurance/device cycle. Ideally, a new application should be submitted before the end of the cycle. However, we understand that there are times when there may be delays in receiving funding. In that case, we will, on a case-by-case basis, extend access for an appropriate period. If the hardware works, AssistiveWare will never leave an AAC user without their communication system for financial reasons. We hope that this provides a better understanding of Proloquo and that you find the ideal AAC solution for your daughter. If you would like to discuss any of these points in detail or need help cancelling your Proloquo subscription, please feel free to drop us a message at support@assistiveware.com and one of our team members will be happy to connect with you. Our team is available and always glad to lend a helping hand and a listening ear.
