Version History of Minimalist Password Manager

3.5.1

June 28, 2024

Hello everyone and thanks for all the feedback sent in over the last few weeks! Today's update adds a few features and fixes a few bugs. Let's discuss! • We've added support for Apple's "Set Up Verification Code" feature which allows you to easily setup one-time passwords in Minimalist by right-clicking or long-pressing verification code setup links or QR codes in Safari. See setup instructions under Settings -> Minimalist AutoFill. Special thanks to Michael B. for nudging us to get it done. • You can now change the category of multiple items at once thanks to the new Change Category menu option. Simply select one or more items in the list, right-click the selected items, and select the new category you'd like applied. Special thanks to Herman B. for the suggestion. • We've updated custom multiline text fields to allow for selection of text, URLs, phone numbers, email addresses, physical address, etc. Unfortunately we had to remove the "copy" quick-action in order to do it. Please let us know if this is a problem for you and we can come up with another solution. Special thanks to Feek for the suggestion. • We've fixed an issue with the importer where 1pux files were not always selectable. Now they are! Special thanks to Goran V. for the report. • We've added import support for Secrets SPEF and XML files. Great! That's it for now, but stay tuned because there is more to come!

A major competitor, whom may remain nameless, has asked us to change our logo on account of its vague similarity to their own. Apparently they are worried their customers will mistake Minimalist for a simpler version of their own product and make the switch. Imagine that! While we disagree entirely with the assertion that anyone would confuse Minimalist with another product, we also have no desire to engage in an expensive court battle with one of the largest password manager makers in the space. Instead we are taking this opportunity to remember exactly why we created Minimalist is the first place; to be a better password manager company! So today we are announcing three major changes to help us get back to our roots: 1. A bold new logo! We have designed a bold new logo which uniquely identifies Minimalist amongst the countless competitors out there. And given that you’ll be looking at this logo on your home screens everyday, we want your input. Please send all feedback, ideas, and/or alternative designs to hello@minimalistpassword.com . 2. Return of the one-time purchase! While we strongly believe that reasonably priced subscriptions are key to building a sustainable software business on the App Store, we also sympathize with everyone out there who simply can't stand subscriptions! So starting today we are reinstating the one-time purchase option. You can now get one step closer to ridding your digital life of subscriptions, once and for all! 3. All purchases are now family purchases! We share everything with our families. Love and laughter, food and vacations, income and expenses. Everything. That's why we've enabled Apple Family Sharing on all Minimalist purchases; past, present and future! No matter how you purchase / purchased Minimalist, your purchase can now be shared with up to five family members via Apple's Family Sharing. That's our update for today, but stay tuned because there is more to come!

Well that didn't last long! No updates for 7 months, then two in the same week?!? Crazy! This update fixes a critical bug which under certain circumstances prevented people from entering their Master Password and unlocking Minimalist! Thanks to everyone who sent in reports. It's much appreciated!

And we're back! Thanks to everyone who sent in feedback over the last... has it really been 7 months?!? That's crazy! Apparently time flies when you’re working on other aspects of the business and taking family vacations! Now on to today's update: • We've updated the field history feature to work with more field types including passwords, one-time passwords, and all custom fields. Each field's history is also now limited to the 10 most recent values to prevent unlimited data growth. Special thanks to Hans O. for prompting these improvements. • We've added a "Copy Secret Key" menu option for one-time password fields so you can now easily access the secret key on both current, and previous, one-time passwords. • We've fixed an issue where AutoFill credentials were not being ordered correctly while using Minimalist AutoFill. Special thanks to Tim S. for pointing this out. • We've fixed a silly little bug where newly created items were not being selected in list when saving via the command-S keyboard shortcut. Oops! Special thanks to Robert B. for the heads up. That's it for now, but stay tuned because there is more to come!

July 16, 2023

Thanks to everyone who sent in feedback over the last few days! Today's update introduces our new Family purchase option, fixes a few annoying bugs, and adds some highly requested keyboard shortcuts. Let's discuss! • Introducing our new Family purchase option! This option enables Unlimited Editing for up to 6 family members via Apple Family Sharing. Each family member gets their own private Minimalist data, securely synced via their own iCloud account. Learn more about Apple Family Sharing at https://support.apple.com/HT201060 . • We've fixed an issue which prevented newly added items from being selected in the list, as well as another issue where the incorrect item would be selected in the list after archiving or moving and item to the trash. What can we say, software is hard! Special thanks to Robert B. for pointing these out. • We've added a few keyboard shortcuts to make navigating Minimalist a little easier. You can now Favorite or Unfavorite selected items with shift-command-F. You can also cancel or "use" a generated password from the password generator popover by typing Esc or Return. We've also prevented command-delete from deleting the selected item while editing, which was admittedly a bug. Special thanks to Robert B. for bringing these to our attention. That's it for now, but stay tuned because there is more to come!

July 3, 2023

Thanks to everyone who sent in feedback over the last few months! Today's update includes a few security and performance improvements which we are pretty excited about. Let's discuss! • Minimalist will now tell pasteboard applications like TextExpander, Butler, Keyboard Maestro, and others, to conceal sensitive information like passwords and PINs according to the standards outlined at nspasteboard.org! This is a major security win which we previously were unaware of. Special thanks to Nick S. and Scott F. for pointing us in the right direction. • We've fixed an issue which caused Minimalist and Minimalist AutoFill to lock unexpectedly under certain circumstances. It didn't always happen, but it happened enough to be annoying! Special thanks to Jake T. for helping identify the cause. • We've removed from the welcome screens all references to a certain purchase option which is no longer available. Apparently we forgot to update these screens when the option was removed a few versions ago. Apologies to everyone who felt confused, mislead, or annoyed by this mistake. And special thanks to all those who wrote in to tell us about it. • Speaking of purchase options, we've completely rebuilt the purchase system using Apple's latest StoreKit APIs to make managing purchases faster, easier, and more reliable than ever! Everything should be much smoother now, including initial purchases, purchase transferring between devices, automatic renewal of subscriptions, and more. • Lastly we've made some minor performance improvements regarding item selection. These improvements are pretty small, but hey every bit counts! That's it for now, but stay tuned because there is more to come!

February 25, 2023

Thanks to everyone who sent in feedback over the last few months! Today's update address another round of relatively minor issues which were annoying us to no end. Let's discuss! • We've reverted the quick-action behavior on touch devices so that a single tap shows the menu rather than triggering the quick-action. Long pressing still shows the menu and allows for drag-and-drop to copy, we've just disabled the quick-action. We apologize for going back and forth on this, we just couldn't stand the quick-action behavior on touch devices. • We've fixed yet another Tag filtering issue where partial matches where being included, this time partial matches at the end of the Tag. Hopefully we've got this sorted out for good this time around! • We've added the ability to clear locally cached data and re-sync from iCloud in the event of a syncing glitch. This doesn't come up very often, but when it does it's really nice to have a built-in one-click solution to resolve it. • We've updated the pricing screen to more accurately display the amount saved by going with the annual pricing over monthly pricing regardless of the region or currency. Special thanks to Tom R. for pointing out the flaw in our previous approach. • We've added the ability to import items from Remembear and Keeper. Special thanks to Tom F. and Herbert S. for helping us get these added. • We've updated the format for 8-digit one-time passwords to use a 4 - 4 spacing such as "1234 5678". It' much easier to read now. Special thanks to Matt K. for the suggestion. • Lastly we've fixed a bug we inadvertently introduced a few versions ago where editing was not being limited to the first 10 items in free mode as the bottom banner would suggest. This was very confusing for many people and not terribly good for our business, so we've corrected it. For everyone who has been enjoying this "feature", please consider it to have been a kind of "extended free trial" which has now come to an end. Thanks for understanding! That's it for now, but stay tuned because there is more to come! *** However there is just one more thing *** We've decided it's time to get "featured" in the App Store and we need your help! We need as many reviews as possible to let the App Store feature team know how much people are enjoying Minimalist. If you haven't done so already, please leave a review now. Do you know someone else using Minimalist? Please ask them to leave a review. Every review counts! Thank you very much in advance and we'll talk soon!

Thanks to everyone who sent in feedback over the last few weeks! Today's update addresses a number of smaller issues and annoyances which we're happy to be rid of! Let's discuss! • We've fixed an issue where filtering by Tag would include partial matches. For example, filtering by "App" would include "Apple" tags. Special thanks to Dario F. for reporting. • We've fixed an issue where spaces included in website and url fields would cause the Open-in-browser action to fail. Special thanks to Feek for reporting this. • Notes fields are now included in search by default, but can of course be changed in settings if you'd like. Special thanks to AS for pushing us over the edge on this one. • Minimalist will now keep a history of custom password and PIN fields, in addition to the standard password field. Special thanks to Jadon B. and Scott F. for the push. • We've added two new categories under the Software group, API Credential and SSH Key. Special thanks to Jean-François G. for the request. • We've added a new Never option to the timer-based-auto-lock setting. Special thanks to Ronald Y. for the request. That's it for now, but stay tuned because there is more to come! *** However there is just one more thing *** We've decided it's time to get "featured" in the App Store and we need your help! Thanks to everyone who sent in feedback over the last few weeks, and the last few years! Today's update addresses some long-standing weaknesses of Minimalist which we have been dying to resolve! We’re happy to announce the wait is over! Let's discuss! • Multiple Selection! You can now select multiple items in the items list, bring up a context menu, and perform an action on all selected items! Favorite, archive, move to trash, restore, they're all included! All standard keyboard combinations and shortcuts work as expected. Shift-up/down, command-tap/click, command-a, and so on. It's glorious! Special thanks to Feek, Édouard P., Greg R., and the countless others who have requested this over the years. • A brand new Filter Menu! We've completely rebuild the filter menu using Apple’s standard menu system. This allowed us to include far more options than before because we can now use sub-menus! You can now filter by favorites, category group, individual category, tags, safe-for-inspection items, archived items, and trashed items. Now wouldn't this be a great place to put sorting options... • Introducing Sorting Options!!! You can now sort items by title, date last edited, and date added, ascending or descending! You can find the sorting options in the new filter menu under "Sort By". Special thanks to Utpal I., Ales, Kevin Y., and the many others who reached out to us about this. • Finally, we've made a number of smaller improvements such as the ability to delete an item's password history, correcting the steps to enable Minimalist AutoFill on newer platforms, and fixing a bug which prevented menu commands from working under some conditions. Special thanks to GJ, Ethan K., and Ashlean S. for the suggestions and bug reports. That's it for now, but stay tuned because there is more to come! *** However there is just one more thing *** We've decided it's time to get "featured" in the App Store and we need your help! Thanks to everyone who sent in feedback over the last few weeks! Today's update is all about improving existing features, fixing bugs, and preparing for the future! Let's discuss. • We've completely re-build quick-actions and context-menus using Apple's latest APIs, allowing us to bring all quick-action and context-menu features to all platforms! Quick-actions are now performed with single tap or click, context-menus are now presented with a long-press or right-click, and quick-action-overlays are now shown on hover whenever a pointer device is present. As part of this change, we drastically reduced the amount of code required to present context-menus, meaning there are far less places for bugs to hide! Hurray! • Minimalist is now ready for the next generation of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS! We've updated text throughout the app to match current naming conventions, fixed bugs related to system changes, and updated context-menus to use Apple's latest APIs to ensure compatibility on all platforms. Special thanks to Iiro J. and Adam N. for bringing the context-menu issues to our attention. • You can now copy attachments from Minimalist to other locations using drag-and-drop! Wait... what?!? You mean we couldn't do that already? No, unfortunately when we originally added drag-and-drop support we couldn't figure out how to support attachments because they are still encrypted at the time the drag starts. We knew it was possible, but it wasn't immediately obvious to us how to do it. So we took some time, figured it out, and now, finally, dragging attachments works just as you would expect. Phew! That feels much better. • Importing and exporting has been improved as well. You can now import data from Elpass and export data to Apple's iCloud Keychain (Safari) CSV format! No more Minimalist lock-in! We've also fixed a number of bugs in the 1Password 1PUX importer which were causing the import to fail with the errors such as "the file couldn’t be saved because a file with the same name already exists", "encountedUnexpectedFieldValueKeys(keys: "")", and "sshKey expected to decode String but found a dictionary instead". Special thanks to Steve B., Nick, Rick McC., Chase M., Justin T., and 韓老師 for the suggestions and bug reports! • Apparently Minimalist has included a bug for many months where changes made to the "While Minimalist is open, automatically lock after a period of inactivity" setting did not take effect until after the app had been quit and re-opened. We didn't notice this in testing because we quit and re-open the app many times each day. Oops! We've corrected the problem and the changes now go into effect immediately. Special thanks to David W. for helping us discover the issue. • Finally, we've improved the Sync Status Indicator to show more information when a sync fails including what error caused the failure, and steps to resolve the issue where possible. Special thanks to Andrea E. for helping us with this one. That's it for now, but stay tuned because there is more to come! *** However there is... just one more thing *** We've decided it's time to get "featured" in the App Store and we need your help! We need as many reviews as possible to let the App Store feature team know how much people are enjoying Minimalist. If you haven't done so already, please leave a review now. • Goodbye to 1Password

Have used 1Password for years as a stand alone app. Tried to upgrade so I could use it on Silicon. Words cannot describe how aggravating and time consuming that was. Hours and hours of emails back and forth. Done now. Tried Minimalist on the advice of some reviewers. Clean (minimalist) interface. Easy to understand and navigate. Options are clear. Would love to see some "theme" options tho'. I think they've got a winner here and I'll spread the word. The MacBook Pro 14" is very happy with it./ Not sure if I'll have to buy another subscription for one more Mac. A

  • Very Good

Really happy with this app. I've been using it for a year or more at least on multiple devices - iPhone, iPad, various Macs. I was previously a 1Password user but did not want a subscription.

Some family members compain about it not saving or syncing passwords, but I think they are mixing up iCloud KeyChain and Minimalist in those cases. I have not had any sync issues between devices.

Love the minimalist interface, though Settings is a bit confusing to navigate on Mac. I wish it had a "normal" settings UI for a Mac app rather than an iOS UI.

  • Just works

This is the one password manager out there that really just wants to sit in the background and work for you. Being fully native, Minimalist is plain pleasant to use and you can tell that the devs respect their users. No second account needed because it syncs through your iCloud account. No safari extension because it integrates with the system autofill. Doesn't have a million weird features you probably won't use but still have to hear about.

Instead, it's the platonic ideal of a password manager: items belong to a given category (pw, credit card, software license...), have custom fields that can sorted into different sections, can be tagged and archived, can have attachments, and can have multiple URLs added for autofill. I posit that that's really all you need in a password manager. There are a few other features I wouldn't mind like weak/pwned password auditing, but the core of this app is fantastic nonetheless.
