The latest version (v1.2.6) makes it clearer to new users as they register, that the app requires a subscription to be purchased once the one month free trial period is over, but that the user can still access their Warmshowers account for free using the website if they decide not to pay for a subscription. It is NOT the case that users are forced to pay for a subscription to continue to access the account paid for by the initial registration fee.

I am connected to WiFi, and I have strong cell reception. Tried messing with settings in the app and nothing seemed to fix it.

Sorry to hear you've been having problems We just released version 1.1.7 to the App Store which we believe resolves some of the stability issues being encountered. In particular it addresses a problem within the map component on iOS, which should improve things for you.
