  • Can’t trust Developers

I really like this game but in the course of a few months it has gone from one of my go to games to I have nothing else on my phone to do. Here is why the game play is absolutely fun but in the middle of the game there will be multiple adds that distract from game play. In addition there will be ads in many cases before you play and after you play. I can only stand this for so long and will eventually delete the app based off this alone the quantity is that large and that distracting. The other issue is the developers changed the UI of the game a few months ago to only now change it back. Now does this once again mean only a hand full of levels and no new ones ugh! I am not sure I want to find out. I will most likely be deleting as this is really frustrating between the ads and the substantial changes.

  • “Improvements”

UPDATE: They took out the hearts and timer and returned this to being the game I loved. Simple, fun, and highly recommended as a good way to kill some time when you need to, whether that be five minutes or a few hours.

Original review: This has been one of my favorite time-killing games for a while, and one I’ve happily recommended to a number of friends. This most recent update has changed that. With the addition of hearts and a timer, this is no longer enjoyable. I can’t say, “Hey, I’ve beaten this level before, but how about if I try doing it THIS way?” because I have to stick with whatever way is going to let me finish the level in the time alotted, or else lose a heart, and if I run out of hearts I’m either paying or done playing. Forget it. Lose the hearts and timer and this will go back to being a game I’d happily give five stars to and recommend to anybody. As it is now, no way. One star; I’ll find other games to spend my time and money on, and I suggest everybody else does too.

  • Added too much

It was fine when it first came out. It was fun, had good levels, good mechanics, and was nice and simple. Then they added power ups, which wasn’t bad. Then they made the menu a little town you could build, added more of a shop, more levels, and made gameplay look a little different. All of these were also good changes. Complicated things a little bit more, but overall good. But they also added a timer to the levels. Now this was not a good addition. To me it feels unnecessary complicated and while it doesn’t make hard, it makes it too uncasual. But over all it’s an ok game, just the timer and the obvious adds that come with all of these types of games.

  • Update makes little sense other than visuals

UPDATE: I JUST NOTICED THIS HAS A DUPLICATE GAME OF A DIFFERENT NAME “TOWN TAKEOVER” WHICH MAKES ME WONDER WHAT IS GOING ON!!! Level 2140 and I’m curious why I had to start at the bottom of the rankings with the new update. There doesn’t seem to be a purpose to the city and the names stopped at Arch-Empire. The city center doesn’t change each time I upgrade/level up my city. I don’t get boosts from upgrading my city (which would make sense and incentivize paying for the buildings). I have been getting progressively less coins per win at higher levels (or they are nerfing the payout behind the scenes). What are the metrics for the points in each level? Maybe outline that in a in-game ‘info’ box? The rolling for buildings stops working after you unlock them unless it’s from a gift box, which seems broken. I’d think there should be production multipliers the higher level or larger city so we have a reason to go higher.

  • Addictive but redundant

Would love to see something different added to the game. A couple of weeks ago, there were these weird “power up” towers that appeared for about 5 levels. Would like to see those come back.

    Update:

For all of the new changes:

Kudos on the new levels and ability to earn/purchase powerups, etc… some suggestions:

    1) loose the fake “rankings” scroll up.. it just takes time and it’s clearly fake

    2) move the piggy bank to the corner of the screen and don’t interrupt game play timing with filling it. I get that it’s an income stream and probably some will use it so don’t loose it altogether… just make it a little less intrusive and time consuming.

    3) I don’t get the city building exercise. Doesn’t appear to add much to the value of gameplay. It looks like you’re trying to add too many features and it’s just distracting. Maybe if city building had goals that would improve star earnings / rewards, that’d be good.

    4) love the randomizing of levels that repeat. Turning them, changing starting positions and backgrounds adds to the complexity of game play in a good way.

    5) adding 1 more star to your rating!

  • Update Ruined the Experience

Honestly, the gameplay itself used to be enjoyable and an entertaining concept. It was mindless fun and I enjoyed it even once the levels started recycling. The ads were insane, but considering that was the game’s main source of revenue, it was tolerable and I tolerated it.

With the newest update, however, they’ve essentially turned it into a pay to win. Despite this, there are still a lot of ads, which is frustrating. They also added unnecessary mechanics such as a “homestead” that you win silly decorations for. There’s also a “piggy bank” that you can pay to break open after you fill it with enough coins or something ridiculous like that. After winning a level, you now have to go through four or five screens before you get back to the Home Screen to start a new level. This is in addition to the ad that you are forced into immediately upon completing a level.

Furthermore, it periodically seems to switch back to a tutorial mode that tries to force me to use power-ups that I have no interest in using. I just wanted to continue playing the game as I had been in an enjoyable time-killing fashion. Now, however, I find it so irritating that I am promptly deleting it from my phone.

  • The ADS

The ads in this game are just downright egregious. I will be in the middle of playing a level, and I will sometimes get 3-4 advertisements, dependent on how long the level is taking. Which is ridiculous. I can understand advertisements after a level, but having 3-4 in one level every like 15 seconds, is ridiculous.

Also the gameplay is definitely NOT that incredible, to warrant having so many ads. It’s a simple drag and wait game, but the fact you are waiting means that as you’re waiting for your towers to fill, you’re getting ads. It’s an obnoxious system, and it really takes you out of the game. It’s one of the worst systems for advertisements I’ve seen.

Not to mention, these ads are basically trying to push you in spending $3.00 in order to get rid of those ads. The system is so focused on trying to get you to spend money, that they just bombard you with ads any chance they get during the levels. If you can put up those ads, then great. However, if it sounds annoying to you, you’re probably gonna end up getting annoyed of the ads pretty quickly.

I’d give it 1 star, but it earns 2 for at least the game working properly and how it was intended. Overall the gameplay can be a bit boring, and you’ll spend more time watching the ads than playing the actual game. City Takeover, more like Ad Takeover.

  • Need to fix

As another review mentioned… great mindless “on toilet” game, but something needs to be done about Level 938. Yes, that’s right, I’m on level 938. Unfortunately, this level is impossible to pass. It starts out with three players and three neutrals. You have a population of 6. Immediately on starting one of the computer players attacks you. You have no choice but to match his attack. By doing so, you have no chance to increase your population and eventually the 2nd player conquers a neutral tower and attacks you soon after. With only a single attack, you are left defenseless, ultimately…dead.

It’s correct, that the game basically recycles, but it’s fun to have the chance to replay old levels and improve your strategy.

I’m hoping that you guys can fix that level. I’m still trying to reach level 1000.

  • A lot of potential, too many ads

I actually really enjoy the game but like a lot of the other comments here, the levels do get recycled and there is a point where it’s just repeating old stages. Very fun though and sometimes actually a little challenging. I think being able to improve difficulties as well as add stages, I’d definitely download again. My biggest issue though are the ads…. Come on guys, like you already have o s of those multiplyers at the end of each level if you watch an ad, like isn’t that enough? I have to watch around two ads per level and it just gets super annoying. Aside from those things though I do like the game and will check out periodically to se if there’s ever an update and if those ads just stop playing so frequently.

  • Great gameplay, horrible ads

These are hands-down the WORST ads I’ve EVER seen in a mobile game. Not just ads to double your rewards, or ads at the end of every level, nooooo that’s not good enough. We need an ad EVERY THIRTY SECONDS while you’re in a match, WHILE YOURE TRYING TO PLAY THE REAL TIME STRATEGY GAME!!! You’ll be playing the game, actually enjoying yourself, then BOOM, you’re subjected to an ad you’ve seen 50 times already in the last 15 minutes. It’s such a good game too, the gameplay is really solid, very fair, and genuinely makes you use your brain. But these ads are unforgivably bad. I’ve lost a game because of how intrusive they are, I was juggling resources down to the split second, then right as I was going to adjust my formation, I get hit with an ad. I come back to see all my forces completely swept. I am not hyperbolizing when I say these are the worst, most intrusive, most numerous ads I’ve EVER seen in a mobile game. Without them I’d easily give 5, but they hamper the gameplay so much I can’t bring myself to give more than 2.
