All Versions of Value Study

2.5

June 2, 2024

As announced in the previous version, this update introduces the subscription for Value Study Pro. You do not have to upgrade yet, it's still optional until July. But given people were confused why I mentioned the subscription, I've added it now so it's your choice whether to do the yearly subscription or pay a bit more for the lifetime upgrade.

Some bug fixes for Live Filter mode.

2.4.1

May 5, 2024

There's a bug fix and a slight improvement, as you can read below. But most importantly this update brings an announcement. Please do read it, in app. But essentially as of July everybody will require Value Study Pro and the free version will no longer be available. - Increase resolution of Live Filter. If this causes problems, you can click "Reduce Live Filter resolution" in the settings. - Fixed bug with rotation of the Live Filter image.

This is an exciting release... it's bug fixes, but I have finally figured out how to fix the big one! Yep, ZOOMING should now work properly even when switching selected values and when using the live filter (video) mode. If you're new to this app, this will seem like a tiny thing but I know how many of you have reached out about the bug so I'm glad to release this! You can also now double tap the image when zoomed in to zoom back out all the way.

Firstly I want to thank everyone again for all your wonderful messages. I really appreciate seeing the artwork you have made while using the app and all the feature requests and even the occasional bug reports, thank you. There are two highly requested features in this update! The first is a better iPad (and iPhone landscape) interface, which is supported on iOS 16+. The other is a "Combine values" mode (it's the new icon with two overlapping circles), when selected it will let you select as many values as you want to highlight together as one. Another change in this update is dropping support for iOS 14. It's always a shame to prevent people from using the app, but I'm hoping it will have minimal impact as most people are on much newer versions. Last but not least, something a bit different! Many of you may will have heard of PenTips. It's a small Dutch company that sells tools for digital artists, such as a textured screen protector and various tips for Apple Pencil. We have spoken together and believe that we've got a lot in common and are both providing useful tools for creatives. So PenTips have given me a coupon code (it's VALUExPENTIPS) which will give you 15% off their products. I've added this in the Settings menu for now under a Resources category, it's discreet and out the way but hopefully useful for some people! Excitingly, PenTips will also share Value Study with their customers... so if you've found it from there, welcome!

I've recieved some emails and reviews about the German language showing instead of English. I thought it was fixed, but some people are still having the issue. So in this update I've added a "Change language" button to the settings. You can also access this via iOS settings -> Value Study. On this page will be a "preferred language" which must be set to the appropriate one for you. If this still doesn't fix the issue please let me know via email (shane@valuestudy.app)! Thanks for your patience and ongoing support.

Description of Value Study

In art, a value (or tone) is how light or dark a colour is. If you're learning to paint or draw, doing value studies is an excellent place to start. These small, loose sketches in greyscale show where shadows fall and highlights appear. These are particularly useful when the subject is more complicated and it's hard to see through the colours to show the subtle shadows. If you're learning to paint or draw, value studies are a surefire way to improve both your artwork and how you visualise references in your mind. People often use photo editors to convert a colour photo to black and white... this is helpful, but this app goes further. By using Value Study, you can flick between levels of detail. Maybe you want to start with just black and white to get a base down, then add in extra values one by one to build up your understanding of the reference you are studying. You can even take it a step further and select all areas with matching tones. Click one of the values along the bottom in the greyscale palette to see all areas that match it in the image, so you can focus on one value while painting it. For example, in a portrait, this could mean seeing how different parts of the body have the same amount of shadow despite potentially looking wildly different when viewed in colour. Value Study is a tool, not to replace your value studies but to enhance them and significantly help beginner artists know where to start when looking at complicated reference imagery.

Reviews of Value Study

  • Game changer

I am a blind artist and use this app to figure out the values of my drawings. I think it is helping my brain “see”. It is so helpful to understand the values of planes and how they interact to create shapes. I can’t thank you enough for this amazing app.!

    Developer Response

Oh wow, I am so glad it helps you and thank you for reaching out! Feel free to email me any time (shane@valuestudy.app) if there’s anything I can do to make it even more useful for you. Cheers, Shane
  • Live and portrait mode fantastic!

As a portrait artist, the portrait mode is a great tool for eliminating background noise, and live video mode works great with landscapes, especially cityscapes to see contrasts. Lets you see values better than any other tool I’ve used. Extremely reasonable cost for what you get. Less expensive than a cardboard values chart!
  • Thank you so much for updating the value scale!

I was so glad to see the ability to set the value scale numbers to what makes most logical sense to me.

    I now have set:
“Color direction” set to “White to Black”
“Show value numbers” set to “on”
    “Start at 0” is checked.

For anyone reading this review: heads up!
The developer has graciously given us advance notice of going to a subscription model but allowing us and anyone who buys Pro before June to be grandfathered in. Buy the Pro upgrade ASAP!

    —-PREVIOUS REVIEW—-
Could you please consider either reversing the value numbers or offering an option to do so? As it stands now, it’s slightly confusing especially when using copic markers which are numbered from lightest to darkest. It should be the higher the number, the darker it gets. That’s the way it is in the 2 other apps Lucida and DaVinchi. But I like to use this app for the overall simplicity & quickness of it. Currently: 1 Black 2 Dark Gray 3 Gray 4 White. It should be: 0 White 1 Gray 2 Dark Gray 3 Black. What do you think dev?

    Developer Response

Hi, thanks for your review! I agree there needs some changes to the numbering. For now you can turn them off completely in the settings. But yes I will look into either changing them or adding the option to 👍 Update: Hi again, just to let you know I’ve added some customisation options for the value scale in the settings. You can now set the starting number and the direction of the values.
