  • Don’t bother.

App locks you out completely and forces you to pay to use it. Avoid.

Hi Pallypower, Thank you for your feedback. We've hoped to make it clear enough (App Store and in the app manual) that the app contains a free trial so that you can decide if it's worth it for you or not. If you have a better idea how to state this, please let us know. Best regards, Dominik and the Lightray Team
  • Totally Disappointed!

Greatly inconsistent readings. Every time the diffuser is removed and reapplied, the lumen readings are very different. They are inconsistent to the point of this app being unusable. I “cannot “ rely on the readings accuracy nor precision. I made, applied, and used the diffuser exactly as instructed. I was very exact that I placed the diffuser in the exact same position every time I reapplied it to my iPhone. After the diffuser wasn’t giving repeatable readings, I created a second diffuser and again received unrepeatable readings. Every time the diffuser is taken off and reapplied I received different readings. The difference in readings were sometimes over 100 lumens. We’ll there goes $7.99 down the drain.

Hi Krablips, Thank you for your feedback. This obviously isn't how it should work and most likely stems from your diffuser (paper) being too heterogeneous in its structure. You can easily make this test as you mentioned by re-applying the same diffuser. If you find your diffuser to produce varying results, you could switch to something else such as a more uniform paper or a piece of plastic (e.g. yogurt container piece etc.) and calibrate accordingly. Which yes, is a bit of a hack. You can always reach out to our support and we'll happily help you to resolve the issue. Best regards, Dominik and the Lightray Team
  • Not free. Bait-and-switch.

This app actually cost $7.99 to use. The “in app purchase” makes it seem like there are other features you can get. But, the real feature is getting the app to work at all. I’m not against charging for apps but put it in the initial link don’t hit me up with it later after all the intro stuff. Or, say “Free trial”, seems dishonest. Not using, deleted.

    Update:
The developer responded that their “Bait and Switch” tactics are to allow “testing” of the app before purchasing. But, there is little time to do this before the “battery” runs out. Plus, you must construct a diffuser, and test this diffuser under the “trial period”. This battery is actually a timer that requires the full purchase price to unlock.

Consider that this app is about half the price of a standalone light meter, you’re better off just going to Amazon and buy a light meter like I did.

There is no reasonable trial period. Deceptive business practice.

  • Sneaky sneaky…

Didn’t even have time to verify the app’s accuracy before it’s asking to charge me £6.99 to continue. I might pay that, if it’d given me more than two minutes to make sure it even worked.

I also feel advertising it on the AppStore as “free” is a way to get more downloads. Just be honest and have it up for £6.99. It’s a very off-putting way of marketing an app. Comes off as rather underhanded.

Hi, Thank you for your feedback! I understand your concern and this isn't how it's supposed to work from our side. The app should allow enough meaningful measurements within the free trial period and also inform you plenty about it such as in the App Store description and in the manual within the app. We'll investigate how we can improve the free trial. Best regards, Dominik and the Lightray Team
  • Have to have filter

The meter works well but you always have to have a filter (or white piece of paper) over the camera. I don’t always have that available when I want to use the meter. It’s an extra step that keeps me from using the app as much.

    Developer Response

Hi, Thank you for your feedback! I understand and that's good to know. Please mind that using the diffuser (piece of paper) is the only way to measure reliably but we'd love to have a simpler alternative. We're still investing a lot in research and development and hopefully come up with an easier solution as well. Best regards, Dominik and the Lightray Team
  • Jerk design forcing you to buy premium

Don’t do what I did - assume this is a free app, hike 2 hours uphill to get to your survey spot and pull up the app only to find your ‘free trial has expired’ (without them ever informing you that you were on a free trial) and that you can’t purchase the app in the forest with no signal, so you have to go all the way back home to buy the app, to make the whole trip again the next day. A bit of transparency from the app developers that this app ultimately costs you and you must pay to use after a few days would be nice

Hi, Thank you for your feedback. This sounds like an unfortunate coincidence and I'm sorry for the inconvenience this has caused! You can find the information about the free trial in the App Store description and in the user manual within the app. If you know of ways to make this more clear, please let us know. I still hope the app is useful to you. Best regards, Dominik and the Lightray Team
  • Easy to use and seems reasonably accurate

Tried on daylight (110k) and on 7500 lumen 40 degree led bulbs at 3 ft, got 15k instead of expected 21k, but probably partly because bulbs weren’t perfectly focused? Anyway, accurate enough for me! Just wish it had family sharing enabled, I’m going to get the other light meter app that does have it for the same price.

Hi steff782, Thanks for your detailed feedback! I assume so but to understand your calculations better, it would be great to reach out to our support with the specific type of LED light bulb. The family sharing is a good input and we'll definitely consider it. Best regards, Dominik and the Lightray Team
  • Lame

Made a diffuser, 6 times. Still says it needs a diffuser……lame
  • Expensive app after a few uses

One is only allowed to try it out a few times before the app no longer works and you’re you have to pay $8 to get it to work again. Sorry that’s a no go for me. Too much for too little.

Hi MjHtops, Thank you for your feedback. I'm sure you understand that developing a great app takes a lot of resources so we try to compensate our efforts a little. We actively decided against showing ads, subscriptions or another form of payment. It would be great to know what you would consider a fair compensation model and price. We'd be very happy if you could update your review or write us an email to let us know :) Best regards, Dominik and the Lightray Team
  • The slogan is correct unintentionally

The last one you’ll need. Terrible and inaccurate.

    Developer Response

Hi heirndkaland, Thank you for your feedback. It seems like something went wrong when the app is inaccurate in your case. Please make sure to use a diffuser as advised within the app. If you already did and are still experiencing issues, please reach out to our support -- we'd be happy to help to get it working correctly for you! Best regards, Dominik and the Lightray Team
