Aomi Japanese User Reviews

wonderful learning tool

I’ve been looking to learn pitch accents (so difficult!) and this app is perfect. After listening to a native speaker, recording myself, then comparing the two, I can hear the difference much more clearly. I’m also extremely impressed by the app’s ability to draw the pitch accent when I speak, which is so good for visualizing. This app is helping me to train my ear. I see that a lot of the vocabulary words are “coming soon,” so I’m looking forward to more content being added. Thank you!

Problems

App will not proceed past the first lesson. How can one test how it works without having to pay for a yearly subscription?

Brilliant designed up however a few core issues

The app is beautifully designed with a very intuitive design. However, there are some issues with the app.

A minor issue appear in the profile portion of the app. Which completely blanked with semi visible UI when scrolling.

A more critical issue is when trying to assess the pitch accent. It doesn’t count for what is said so I can get a high percentage match without saying the word correctly if I use the right tone. Which can give people a false impression.

Accurate feedback or not ?

Hello and thanks for a great idea for an app. I will definitely be guided by your recordings when I hear them back.
I have one issue that has me confused.
If I record some random noises with crazy pitch up and down, it is easy to get above 80% accuracy. How is this possible?

Response from developer

Thanks for the feedback! Yes that's right! Our technology recognizes and analyzes the pitch, this is called pitch accent. This is not speech to text technology, it does not recognize the correctness of the spoken word. Our task is to learn to perceive by ear and produce a Japanese pitch accent ourselves. You can make a mistake in a word, just sing or even mumble a phrase if the phrases are a bit difficult for your level. For example, like children! At first they babble and imitate adults, thus learning to speak. At the moment, we are considering the possibility of adding word recognition technology to the application. But while there are doubts whether this will become an additional difficulty for the user.

Nice!

I can tell that this app was created with a lot of thought and care. It’s cute, and I enjoyed watching the pitch accent. I just started with Japanese, so I think the first couple of lessons are a little hard for me. I might return to this app after I am intermediate level.

A Maverick in Japanese Language Study

I shall begin by saying that I have found this to be such an indispensable resource that I have purchased the lifetime subscription, not only to continue having unmitigated access to the app but to support the developers as well. The lessons offered here along with the thorough delineations of the Japanese language and specifically pitch accent are extraordinary.

There is currently no other application available that offers such an exhaustive account of Japanese pitch accent. They have included sections for Japanese Phonetics, Slang, Surnames, Geographic Names, and much more. Their methodology is delineated in detail in a section specifically for it. The spoken audio examples are outstanding and allow you to compare your own timbre to that of a native speaker.

Initially, my options were between this app and Dogen’s pitch accent course. After careful deliberation, I chose Aomi. I can assure anyone who may be in the same position that I made the correct choice. Dogen’s course can, at times, seem interminable rather than meticulous. For the amount of money that you would spend on his course, you would be better off purchasing a lifetime subscription to Aomi. The team at Aomi have managed to create an exciting learning experience whilst maintaining concise and succinct explanations of concepts.

Aomi is the first of its kind, and perhaps the best.

Response from developer

Thank you for such an amazing interview, we are very happy to hear that people enjoy using our application.

Good idea but

When there is a long sentence, the text goes onto the next line whilst the pitch spectrometer reading does not. This makes it difficult to tell which parts of the sentence are high/low. It would he great if the spectrometer reading stayed above the relevant part of the sentence at all times.

Response from developer

Thank you for your feedback! We also noticed this with some examples and have already fixed them. This should be a rare case but please let us know if you keep experiencing this bug. Thank you in advance!

Can’t record / no microphone access

Looks like a good app but you can’t actually record your voice even if you enable microphone access.

Response from developer

Thank you for your feedback! Could you please try to press and hold the mic when recording yourself? We have noticed that some users don't press-and-hold the mic button but just press it when trying to record themselves, which causes it not working. Currently working on making this more clear.

Cool!

The app is great for such a new app but obvuisly like all new apps, it glitches a lot especially during the flash cards. I hope it gets more attention!

Response from developer

Thank you for your feedback! We'll keep working on improving it!

microphone

i can’t allow the app to access my microphone anywhere in settings help please

Response from developer

Thank you very much for your feedback! We have fixed this bug and the microphone should work without problems in the new version of the app. Please update the app to the latest version to be able to use the mic without problems. We apologize for the inconvenience.
