Not just for music!!!

I downloaded this app to record my school notes so that I could listen to them at work and on a road trip. The voice notes app that comes with an iPhone doesn’t allow playback of multiple recordings so I was finding it difficult to listen continuously. This app allows continuous playback and you can also make playlists. I was even able to organize my recordings into playlists of each weeks learning. Very simple and easy to use app. I really enjoy using it!
The only very small annoyance was that I logged in using Apple ID on my iPad and when I downloaded the app on my phone and tried to sign in again it generated a new account. I know apple provides a “fake” email when creating accounts so this probably accounted for that error and is more an issue on the apple end. It was an easy fix tho as I was able to airdrop the files from my iPad to my phone both in app and could transfer the recordings between devices. So just be mindful if you’re using Apple ID sign in that you may get 2 accounts and have to airdrop.
But genuinely a really great app. I think I discovered it from a Reddit post when I was on the hunt for an app that I could record my notes with. I’m glad I did!! I can’t speak for anything musical to do with the app but the general premise is great and the audio quality is really good as well. I could even upload my already recorded voice notes into the app to put in the playlist.

Hi Ashley, Thanks so much for your review. The issue you encountered with your iPad is an odd one; generally speaking, Apple should realise that you already have an account when you sign in with Apple, as long as you are signed into the same Apple ID on both devices. Would you mind shooting me an email to thomas@tape.it so we can look more into this? You really shouldn’t have to Airdrop all the time.

Incredible app. Incredible support

I’ve been using this app for a few months and there’s so many things. I really love about it. For me, the big thing is having an action button right on my phone’s Lock Screen so I can quickly start recording audio on the fly. The layout of the app is nicely simple and user friendly. I had a couple things that I needed support to help me figure out, and they were on it immediately and super helpful.

If you fancy yourself a budding Fred Again looking to turn your real life field recordings into music, this is the app for you!

Great for journaling!

I personally never really write reviews for anything unless it has been an app that went downhill, and I enjoyed playing it hoping that the creator see it true update. However, this app is so clear even on the free version. When you replay what you have recorded it even sounds great. I haven’t tried it with music or playing guitar yet, but I use it for journaling due to a disability that I cannot write as much and it is beautiful the clarity and the ease of journaling and putting it into different mixtapes, which I consider folders is awesome!

So cool to hear that it works so well for your journaling! And thank you so much for writing a review, that’s really nice.

Cool app hope they keep improving it

It’s a cool app, very easy to import all your voice memos. Nice UI and it detects what instrument you play in the recording and changes the appearance of the file.

Falls short on customisation and sorting options. For example I’ve created mixtapes for different demos or songwriting ideas of the same songs, but they appear in a random order so I can’t see the most recent version at the top.

Would love to see regular improvements and general quality of life changes

Thanks so much for the review. We’ll definitely keep on improving it. The newest update has a small quality of life improvement already: you can now rename tapes and change their instrument directly in the list. Custom mixtape sorting will also come soon; we agree that it’s really needed.

Wish design was a bit more streamlined

I have tried this app for a while based on a Tape Notes podcast recommendation but will be going back to voice memos for one simple reason. It sounds super trivial, but I just wish the record and tapes pages were combined like they are in voice memos. I really don’t like how I have to record something, then go to a separate page to edit/change file name etc, then go to another page to record again. It’s just a bunch of unnecessary button presses. Why can’t I just record on the list page like voice memos? Also why can’t you replace audio like you can in voice memos?

Honestly I think most other things about this app are better than voice memos, and if these two things were addressed I’d use it, but it’s just so annoying having to flip back and forth between the record and tapes pages constantly!!!

Thanks for the honest feedback. We actually considered a design with a combined record and listen page several times as we developed Tape It and are still thinking about maybe implementing it the way you describe. It has a few other downsides, but I fully understand that the tradeoff we chose may not have been the best tradeoff for you. For now, in the short term, we’re thinking about making it easier to directly name recordings that you made right after you made them on the record screen. That should solve most of the pain points you mention if I understand you correctly.

Great app, incredible support

Intuitive and powerful field recorder. Makes it fast and unobtrusive to capture high quality stereo audio. Amazing customer support, too. Highly recommended.

Thank you so much for the nice words. Really glad you like Tape It.

Amazing, has everything voice memos is missing

I’ve been using voice memos everyday to record musical ideas and getting more and more annoyed until I found this app. So much easier to use and start recording! Way more organization features too, which is important when you have 400+ recordings to sort through. The free version is also great, has everything you need to get started. Thank you devs helping me make more music!

Buyer beware- Lock Screen widget not available on latest iOS

Not a musician but have always wanted a simple way to record sound bites directly from lock screen—paid lifetime access $100 then… Tape It widget unfortunately is not available as a widget from lock screen, only home screen.

Fix it and I’ll update - “thanks?”

Stopped recording when prompted to review

In the middle of a great recording, I was prompted to review the app… which stopped my recording.

They get so much right in this app though. I wish there was a record button visible at all times while navigating.

Response from developer

Hi Roy, I’m sorry that the recording got interrupted. The interruption must have been a different reason, maybe an incoming phone call, or another app taking over the phone’s audio system. The review dialog can show up after a recording has been stopped, but it will never be the reason to stop the recording. Good feedback on making the recording button always visible. We’ve actually considered it, as it would solve a few other design problems, but had been a bit worried that it would be overly annoying. So it’s great to hear that you would actually like it that way.
