Ear training power app

Used correctly this app is a great tool for getting the sound of chord progressions in your ear. It’s the kind of thing to do like 15 minutes a day and just gradually chip away. Consistent practice will make for significant growth. Only change I would make would be to allow a custom scale or chord. But frankly the available options still provide years of potential work.

Thank you so much , customizing scales and chord are definitely on the shortlis of the coming features ! Best, David & MelodEar

Predatory Pricing

After you pay $30 they completely disable functionality after a year. Don’t be suckered into a “subscription”, there’s nothing new. 55 standard chord changes which are freely available and are NOT the property of the app developers. Should you pay $30 over and over for that? Or the note recognition which runs on your phone? I guarantee that the music theory will not need to be “updated” in 2023, 2024, 2025.

Mind stretching and fun

I’m new to iPad and this is one of my first apps. The learning curve is perhaps a bit steeper for me, but already I am getting a lot out of it in ear training and intuitive understanding of modes.

Response from developer

Hi Mike, thanks for sharing ! Yes we made the learning curve as complete as possible for beginner as well as advanced singers/musicians. This is the learning curve I would suggest, step by step : - Level 1: work on a single mode (there are like 36 modes) and work on your pitch ( there is a fine tuner) -Level 2: work on a single mode and improvise, then gradually learn intervals -Level 3 : combine 2 modes -Level 4 : combine more modes - Level 5 : play with motifs and intervals in the crossmode I would be curious to know how it evolves for you within a few months. Kind regards, David.

I want to try this badly

I just wonder why it won’t work with Bluetooth headphones, only wired headphones? I might have to buy an older phone to try it out.

Response from developer

Hi , thank you so much for your comment, and sorry for my late reply, now MelodEar can definitely be used with bluetooth earpods. We just really recommand a wired earphone , because the latency of the pitch recognition is way better without bluetooth :) David & MelodEar

Great concept, but I wish it was more modular

I honestly see a lot going for this app. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to verify the note degree that I’m playing to a chord, and this idea really does save a lot of time in that regard.

With that said, I do think this needs some work, as sometimes I feel like I don’t always need a scale to accompany a certain chord. It’s nice to have them available, but for beginners to intermediate players it can be a little intimidating when you don’t know what scales to use.

Another thing I wish this app had is the ability to be more modular with your chord and scale definitions. I like the library, but I also think that it would just be much easier if I could create a chord with the notes defined by me. It allows for people to get different voicings, and also state chords which aren’t really in this list, like sus chords or chords with omitted notes and such.

Overall though, I will definitely be using this in the future. Chords can be substituted, and it’s really just a tool. That being said, I would love to see something done about the things I mentioned, but regardless, thank you for putting this out!

Dear Aooog.... :) Thanks for your very nice comment ! I would like to understand better your second point : the selection of scales that is proposed in the edit window of Melodear is only made of relevant scales , compatible with the chord you entered. and what do you mean by saying 'sometimes I feel like I don’t always need a scale to accompany a certain chord'. If you mean you just want to sing a few notes, of course the point is not to sing all the scale on each chord, in the order from 1 to 7. But I'm not sure that is what you meant. as for your 3d point : customizing scales and chord are definitely on the shortlist of the coming features ! Thank you so much, Best, David & MelodEar

Clever concept, but…

Great concept that brings together ear training and melodic improvisation in one. I suspect this could be a very useful practice tool. Unfortunately, I cannot confirm this however, because the free version is so scant on features (only offering two chords, and not even giving the ability to play between them at a given tempo, you have to trigger them each by hand) that you can’t really be certain how this would work for you and if it’s something you might want to pursue further. At least they could have offered one free standard, so you could try this out through a tune and see how it might affect your improvising in a real world context. Or offer sensible pricing. To unlock the app it’s 50 Australian dollars per year subscription. 50 dollars to own the app outright might be reasonable. But for a subscription - for an ear training app, even one as unique as this - that is outrageous. I don’t see many people taking the chance on this new concept, because it’s unknown, you can’t test it properly in the free version, and the pricing is so extravagant. And that is a real shame, because the method and tool has so much potential.

Hi Governor, Thank your for your feedbacks. About the price , in a world where you get a coffee for 5$ at starbucks, or a movie for 15$, I really can't see the point of this modern ferocity on apps prices. An app of this musical depth ( it is definitely not a toy) is a huge tool. Used properly, following the lessons, it can definitely be a home-musical schools for years of practice. With 30$ these days you cant even pay yourself one single private lesson with a decent teacher. So this price for one year of use, I shamelessly say is really sensible to me. So I'm genuinely a bit shocked by this kind of reaction, though I can see that you are with good intentions. As for your point about trying the app before your purchase : you probably miss that you have a 7 days free trial with the full version. Kind regards, David & MelodEar

This is a unique and exceptional app

My voice and ear are improving immediately. It is a brand new app that simultaneously trains mode recognition and voice. There are several YouTube videos that provide background as well as a tutorial within the app with many to follow. I have many apps and there is nothing close to this app for vocal training and musicality available.

Cool app

The app concept is really cool, however I can barely try any of it without a pricey subscription. You’re limited to only two chords from the Dorian scale, and only one of which will actually let you use the mic.

To be honest I don’t think the regular musician will throw away 50 bucks on a music app like this, especially since you can’t even try more features to see what you’re paying for- a bit disappointing.
