  • Great music, looping story

    SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
I listen to the music on a daily basis. In fact, at the time of writing this, I’m listening to its music. Some are calm and homey, while others are absolute bangers. Who knew heavy metal guitar went well with violin?
The story is more or less the same. In the first chapter, you find your team to beat the final ring bearer alongside, and bond with them a bit. In chapter two, it leads to the final battle and builds a reason to defeat them, like I’ve never wanted to slap someone more than in the master of wealth chapter. Great job with that, really. In the final chapter, half the cast dies, you beat the final boss, and that’s the story, three times over. Master of wealth chapter was the most recent I completed, so I’ll talk about that.
Herminia’s brutal! Realistically, someone probably would have overgrown her before if she wasn’t too strong for them. So the team is bargello, pierro, tiziano, and another person. Pierro survives getting a large team, bargello is the one you fight with and also survives, toziano got bought out by herminia so you fight him and he goes down, and the other one got kicked down a long flight of stairs. Oof! The bad thing is that I liked him. Once again, building a reason to defeat herminia.
Thanks for staying tuned, unknown-but-oddly-kind-stranger, thank you for your time.

  • 9 out of 10.

Very fun game and love the came controls and storyline. My only issue is I’ve done maybe 1,500 gem summons and only got 1 (5 star) character. I also noticed the feature reward (gems) remains the same for each quest completed. The gem reward should increase as requirements for the daily or weakly featured quests increases to unlock. The game is very fun and has outstanding game mechanics and awesome storyline. I just hope the summoning system would be improved on the drop rates and also gem increase as features increases its difficulty requirements. Will update my ratings on next update. Thanks.

  • Essential for your Game Library

I don’t remember how I heard about it, but after trying the original Octopath Traveler, i was surprised by how much I enjoyed the classic-but-updated JRPG. I’m not normally enthusiastic about turn-based strategy, but OT was different. So, when I heard about them releasing a prequel game on mobile, and a gacha game at that, I was wary.

Square Enix continues to surprise and delight in this franchise/IP. The mechanics for the mobile version are more streamlined, without sacrificing visual or audio quality. The battle techniques get streamlined as well, for 8 characters on your team instead of just 4. In addition to being truer to its name, it’s allowed for a different kind of play style that I find refreshing after having invested so much time in the original.

The gacha elements are present but not intrusive to gameplay, which is the standard I prefer for those.

Also, Yasunori Nishiki did not “phone it in” with the soundtrack. All of the new music expands Orsterra’s drama and intrigue, and I really am hoping for a volume 2 soundtrack to be released eventually. Just absolutely amazing!

10/10 recommend for the nostalgic elements, music, beautiful artwork, and fun

  • A great game with improved business model

Octopath CotC is a 10/10 as far as story and game design goes. But for the first few months this game had absolutely horrendous monetization.

Square Enix has been listening to community feedback and we have seen massive improvements to the new character banners. There’s still some tweaking and new features needed, but overall this is a very well made game with great updates, and solid improvements to the business model. Highly recommend this title.

  • This is a great mobile RPG

I don’t usually write reviews but this is a fun game and has some of the best content for an RPG gacha game. The storylines can all be played with the baseline characters and if you do 10 pulls every day (very easy to do) you are bound to end up with 5 star characters from the general pool (albeit slowly). Some people complain there aren’t enough rubies but I would disagree. There are plenty of opportunities to hoard or spend them and get your favorite character. I also think the developers are constantly adding new content and listening to feedback which is rare from a lot of gacha games. Happy Traveling! ❤️ the Caits!

  • Story: great, everything else: garbage

The story is fun and well done, and I enjoy the combat. But everything else is just garbage that drains the fun. Traveler side quests are too often identical ( male character must fight a beast to be a man and learn that asking for help is being an adult, female character wants a husband asap and picks a random guy for you to help them woo). The gacha is HORRIBLE, rates are so low that I’ve completed multiple stepups without getting event characters. And don’t expect to collect 5 star people either. I’m at 80+ days played and have FIVE and only one has even been awakened (because I’ve gotten that one three times in the guaranteed 5 star draw). Farming rubies for the gacha is miserable and slow, good luck even getting 300 in two weeks without playing like it’s your job. A daily free gacha like most games would help. Or easier free rubies to gather. Paid rubies are overpriced. 20 USD to do a 10 draw with the horrible rates I mentioned. Sorry y’all. Find a better game.

  • NOT READY

You will eventually run out of things to do and at that point you’re having to wait for weeks for the story to continue. And when it does, you get one scene that you’ll finish in less than an hour. The prices on the packs are outrageous to boot. It’s a beautiful game, but I would recommend Another Eden over this one. If you want to play this I would get it on console or wait at least a year. Also, whenever I sit through ads for the extra loot I have to flip the iPad to correct the orientation (which is very annoying), only to end up receiving a reward that’s too insignificant to warrant watching the ad in the first place.

  • Seemingly fun, but very slow paced.

I’ve never played anything OCTOPATH related, and when I started, it was a lot of fun, but then I slowly began to realize that anything I clicked on took forever, even with a great internet. Not sure what it was or what caused it, but it’s very hard to want to keep playing when both dialogue is really slow paced and can’t skip them, and when almost every action take 10-15 second to load in.

I’m using an iPhone XR, so I don’t think it’s because my phone is “old”, so not sure why this is happening.

Either way, it’s a fun game, I like the battling, menus are quite confusing, and most actions take a while to process.

  • Update- JRPG gem ruined by predatory publisher

This is a masterpiece of a game: great story, fun combat, interesting characters. The irony is that a central theme in the story is the villainy of the wealthy, greedy, and powerful exploiting the common man. This is exactly what SQEX is doing to the global fan base. Setting aside the fact that the prices are outrageous in the gacha market ($30 for a 7.7% chance to pull the featured 5* unit; $600 to guarantee it), for the very first collab SQEX changed the step up banner to not only cost more rubies, but to only work with PAID rubies. But wait, there’s more — the JP version of the banner gave a 50% chance for the featured unit on the last step. In global it is nerfed to 15%. And that’s not all: in JP you could guarantee the unit in 100 pulls — try 200 in global. Path of Greed indeed.

Update: SQEX listened to player feedback and attempted to make amends. They did not fix the existing banner, for the best collab unit, and deceptively claimed they could do nothing about it. However, the rest of their actions were enough to raise my rating to 4 stars. If they hadn’t lied, it would have been 5.

  • Good single player RPG, terrible gacha.

Love the story and gameplay, but the tacked-on gacha banners are extremely costly to pity, and the free in-game currency is super sparse, to where it would take way too long to guarantee a unit. Not only that, but they have an accelerated release schedule vs their Japanese counterpart (several months ahead, content-wise), so not only do you not get enough in-game currency to pull regularly as F2P, but so many banners create a heck of a lot of FOMO for those who like collecting units. On top of it all, prices for purchased (read: real $ spent) in-game currency is super pricey.

If you love the og Octopath game, you’ll enjoy the story beats and the gameplay, but don’t expect to have enough earned in-game currency to pull very often, unless you’re ok with never guaranteeing anything or being willing to spend real money.

Also, devs are slow to respond to community outcry, and just throw their (green aka unseasoned) Community Managers out to the angry mob and they simply clumsily and unclearly communicate information that often leave you asking more questions vs what they actually say in their answers.

    You’ve been warned.
