  • Best Calculator on the AppStore, just one complaint.

(the developer response was correct it was totally my fault, I missed that setting, thank you!)

Easily the best calculator for iPad that money can buy, I just wish that the setting for the thousands separator worked as intended. Currently if you select “commas” to separate every 3 consecutive digits, the app never actually does it. It’s my only gripe considering I work in aviation, long numbers are common & I dont like seeing long strings of numbers without anything to separate them, they all just start to blend together. If I’m doing something wrong please let me know.

    Developer Response

Hi there, thank you for your kind review. Also, I think know why you are not seeing the thousands separator.  At the top level of the settings in the group of options that starts with 'RPN' there is an option to switch on Thousands Separators. My suspicion is that this is switched off for you, so you should just need to switch that to on. The setting you were looking at is in the Advanced Settings and lets you choose what character to use as a separator. Some people prefer to use a different separator to that which is set by the system when you pick your Language & Region, and that's what this advanced setting lets users do. If you encounter any further problem with thousand separators please send an email directly to support@pcalc.com and we'll do our best to help.

  • Simply Superb in what it does

Seldom have I come across a program of any type which can be called "Excellent', but this is the real deal. Throw out your TI, your HP, your Casio. PCalc magically transforms your phone into a state-of-the-Art customizable calculator. For all your calculating needs, be it simple, scientific, or computer science. Yes, it might be nice to have business/finance functions. But I just love this program for what it does, and at an extremely reasonable one-time cost. You can't go wrong. It even has a really handy widget for the iPad. I love it!
  • Genius. Essential. Permanent home page spot.

Modifiable keyboard (main and 2nd), programmable functions, decimal/hex/octal/binary bases, keyboard/result formats for engineering , accounting, scientific, and others. Built-in conversions (pounds to ounces, miles to kilometers, etc). Constants (speed of light, local tax rate, etc). Used multiple times daily. Makes iPad/iPhone a true computer. First app I bought when I first got into Apple in 2004. Favorite of all apps. Does everything a calculator should do, and more. JT is a man with a great sense of humor. The world needs him. You need this app. 42.
  • My absolute favorite app. Used daily. Makes a computer, a computer.

*ALL* math functions. Easily programmable keys: add your own. Constants and conversions. Numeric modes: decimal, hex, octal. Keyboard types: some are scientific, engineering, accounting; each with proper keys and result types. Selectable memory displays. James Thomson’s a genius developer with kind support and forward-looking updates. This is the first app I sought when I bought Apple devices and it has a prominent place on my Home Screen. It’s the ultimate answer: 42!
  • Used it for years

I have used PCalc for years, probably since it was first released, and it’s still the first app I add to my systems when I get a new one, whether it’s the desktop, iPad or iPhone version.

Over the years I’ve focused on the developer tools it offers, and scientific functionality, and now it’s currency conversion when we travel.

I have never found another calculator that offers the same functionality, and the only thing I wished it could do was graphing of functions.
  • Widget Key Click❓

Updated review, 30 January 2023: Developer’s response makes no sense; I’m referring to widget key click sounds, not currency rates. However, I did have a problem with currency rate updates several years ago…
    24 December 2022:
Minor bug…the ‘squeak’ key click no longer produces any sound on the PCalc widget. The ‘classic’ key click tone, however, appears to function flawlessly. Go figure…
  • I know calculators

this is by a wide margin the best ‘quick’ calculator software ever developed. i love how it allows me to obsess over fine-tuning my layout exactly how i like it. with any program that invites the user to invest this level energy into of customizing their experience, there will always be things i start to notice that i just really wish were present. with this app, the one thing i would like to point out to the developer is that most classic RPN calculators allow the user to combine a STO/RCL operation with plus/minus/times/divide. for instance, you can do things like STO * 2 or RCL / 7. i use these types of operations a lot on my calculators and i find them to be intuitive and convenient. although the multiple memory in this app has a pretty good and authentic interface, it’s missing this one feature I like, and there doesn’t seem to be a good workaround. I’ve tried writing macros and putting custom buttons in my layouts but i can’t really see any good way to replicate this feature. the storied development of this app is obviously a labor of love and i look forward to see what features come out next.
  • New Style Widget doesn’t work

New style widget doesn’t work but old style does in iOS 16. Wish this was more clear in the description. The old style widget can’t be added to home screens and can only show up below all new style widgets on the widget screen. It’s helpful but sub optimal. Will change this to a 5 star review if this all made more clear in the App Store description.
  • Best calculator. Fast, stable, versatile. Great support.

Tape lets you keep track of calculations. Choose number of visible memories. Very full function set for all purposes (including science, programming, advanced math). Predefined conversions (e.g. decimal to hex, miles to inches, decimal to metric). Predefined constants (e.g., speed of light, cents in a dollar, pre-set tax rate in your city). Two keyboards. Moveable keys on each. Add keys by programming new ones. Choose “theme” (key color, icon, background). All this and more. This app makes iOS/iPadOS complete—as if they were missing PCalc. Used daily: a constant member on Home screen. Who? 42: the Ultimate Answer to the Universe of calculators.
