I wish there was a leaderboard for all the games, not just the mini crossword

Excellent brain teasers

The variety of puzzles here makes it easy to pick the type that appeals at any given moment. Letterboxed is completely new to me and has become my favourite. Mini crossword is sometimes undoable as a Brit - so many US brand names, film and sport references. But getting better at each is a silly fun extra to start the day. It’s churlish to criticise a freebie, but that’s partly what reviews are for: 1: the dictionary for both Spelling Bee and Letterboxed seems oddly narrow, given that it’s a NYT app. 2: the detailed images in Tiles are really hard to make out on a phone, especially colour contrasts.

Response from developer

Hi there! Thank you for your review and your feedback. Spelling Bee uses an internal word list developed over time from many sources. We are unable to include each word that can be created with the letters provided. The editors decide which words are best for the list for that day. Thank you for your support!

Too many American words

I’ve been a subscriber for months now and have mostly enjoyed playing the word puzzles, but have had enough of all the Americanisms (sports terms in particular) and the lack of British English words. Today’s pangram in Spelling Bee wasn’t even in my dictionary, yet perfectly good everyday words aren’t accepted (groundout but not groundnut..?!). Often the only way to achieve Queen Bee is to use the Spelling Bee Checker website. It’s just becoming frustrating to play and I don’t see the point of having the app in the British App Store.

American words only

Love the game but being as I speak English English, a lot of words I put in the spelling bee aren’t recognised, also the Connections are sometimes things I’ve never heard of and I have to google words, which takes some of the fun out of it. It’s still good fun though and I do it everyday

Would be a 5 but…

Over all a good crossword app. But why wouldn’t you let people use the applepencil? No fun without it! All the games seem to have one tiny problem. Letterboxed doesn’t tell you the word goal throughout game play. So it’s hard to care. Strands doesn’t have a way to give up and see the answer, and sometimes the words don’t fit the clue enough to understand why they’re included…same for connections. Plus…if you have to explain them that much, were they really clever clues? The true merit of these types of puzzles comes with knowing you’ll kick yourself for not guessing it once you see the real answer. But at times, the real answer makes no sense and you’re left feeling cheated with no explanation as to why the author thought it was a good idea. And if your games have no way to reveal the real answer, then you’ve learned nothing and you’re left wondering forever. Overall the games are usually fun, but at times kinda weak. Oh and wordle is boring and too easy. I don’t even bother with it anymore.

Class of the field.

Im retired and NYT games are on my agenda every day. Best set of games with extras i know about. They give serious attention to developing the capabilities of this feature. (Don’t care for their Sudoku though- like Genina much better!) Their games offer interest day after day.

We owe Will Shortz a debt of gratitude—if there were a Noble (!) prize for puzzles i would nominate him. ( i wish him well—be sure to read his article about recovering from a stroke.

Lots of games these days — NYT scored a coup by buying Wordle and buying/ developing Wordlebot— be sure to check that out!

I believe Shortz was the developer of Spelling Bee, which is a real winner. I don’t use the hints but they would add a lot of fun for many. Grandchildren, now 9 and 11, have enjoyed playing for years. First day the older one played he immediately found “admin” that i had missed. He is named Victor and the first day i let him start one that was one of the words.
Love the capabilities to work past puzzles, keep and share stats—recently added to Combination- which is a great game for exercising lateral thinking muscles!
Good notes on crosswords, including info on and comments by constructors. Good grading by difficulty.

From other sources I particularly like mathler, crosswordle and octordle rescue (and other variants, like quordle— but i find “rescue Octordle” most challenging ergo fun. )

Ever since I got introduced to wordle from my school when I was in y6 in primary, The teacher was being very persuasive with it, so that brought me to enjoy it. A few weeks later I got fascinated into the introduction of the second page of literacy puzzles like wordle such as spelling bee, letter boxed, etc! Even without VIP of NYT Games (where I cannot play crosswords) I still enjoy playing the other popular games oustide of the ones for the masterminds.

Great for the brain

Ever since I heard of this I got obsessed with it. I am a kid who likes all these things. From Wordle to The Mini it is great! Some are hard for me like connections. But I feel like it makes sense because like I said I’m just a kid. Though others like strands and spelling bee are always fun. As soon as I saw it I gave up on everything else on my IPad. I heard about in 2023 when my nana and grandad came over. Sometimes they let me do it. I wish there were more games like a trivia game where you can test your knowledge on 20 questions or a book zone where you type up a book and then you can read it. I don’t know what else I can possibly talk about anymore so keep up the good work!

Archives

Would be great to have an archive for connections. One a day isn't enough!
