All Versions of iCab Mobile (Web Browser)

10.7.5

April 22, 2024

Fixes an issue of the "Open in iCab Mobile" option in the Sharesheet

10.7.4

February 7, 2024

- A new option in the Web Site settings allows to block/skip the tracking links on the google search result - The in-page search now remembers the last search position, so you can continue the search even when aborted the search completely before (of course only when you are still on the same page and the search term does not change) - Removes a filter from the default ads blocker which could prevent that links of the google image search function as expected - Fixes an issue with creating QR codes for links under iOS 17 - Removed the "google cache" module because google discontinued this service - Fixes an issue when launching the App through one of the options from the menu of the App icon on the homescreen while being logged out of all users accounts. The command from the App menu was ignored in this case, instead of executing the command after logging-in with a user account.

10.7.3

October 14, 2023

- In the web site settings there's now a new option to disable "universal links". The "Universal links" feature of the iOS allows App to redirect links to their website to themselves, so these links won't open in the browser anymore. But because many users do not like this "hijacking" of links, this can now be prevented with the new setting. - Workaround added for an iOS bug when handling fragment identifiers within "data" URLs - Bugfix: When opening many links in the background very fast it could happen that not all pages did load. - Bugfix: Fixes a crash when opening a private Tab under certain circumstances - Bugfix: Fixes a crash when processing a very large number of new files within the downloads when there are already a large number of files in there

10.7.2

March 10, 2023

Unfortunately the new quickstarter can trigger a bug of the iOS, which has the result that the quickstarter does not always show its bookmarks. This iOS bug only affects tabs which were already used for a while to load web sites. So the issue only reveals itself after a while. If and when the bug shows up can also depend on the device hardware and iOS release. New tabs were never affected. This update of iCab Mobile includes a workaround for this iOS issue so it can avoid the empty quickstarter.

Unfortunately a very rare condition (and only if you never used the quickstarter before) could cause a crash when launching the last update. Sorry. This update fixes this issue again.

- The Quickstarter is far more powerful since iOS 14 now (in older iOS releases everything remains the same). It is possible to group the bookmarks within the quickstarter, so they are visually separated. For each group it is possible to define rules which control when or where their bookmarks are shown or hidden. This way you can have job-related bookmarks which are only shown on weekdays when being in the office and private bookmarks which are shown at home, for example. So the quickstarter can automatically adapt itself by time, date and location. At the top of the new quickstarter you'll find a few icons which can be used to configure the dark mode (always on/off or using the dark mode setting of the system), to set the size of the Bookmark icons, to select wether the icons show a preview of the page or the site icon, and there's an option to display the icons in separate groups or in a compact way without any group-boundaries. The last icon allows to edit the quickstarter so you can define/edit the rules (tap on the "…" icon), reorder the bookmarks by dragging them to the desired location etc. - The Tabs window (opened via "Tabs" icon from the toolbar) supports the same contextual menus for the currently open tabs as the Tabs in the tabs toolbar. Just long-press on the entry in the window (or on the Tab in the toolbar) to open the menu - Since iOS 16.4 it is possible to add web pages to the home screen via ShareSheet - Drag & Drop (for bookmarks, links, downloads etc) is now also available on the iPhone (since iOS 14). If and for what you would like to have the ability to drag & drop items can be configured in the "iser interface" settings. - Bugfix: Since iOS 15 the iOS adds its own "Search in Web" item into the text selection menu, even though iCab already has its own "search" menu item. Also the menu item of the iOS doesn't work correctly yet, it opens the search in Safari instead of the default browser. Therefore this menu item is now removed from the menu. - Bugfix: Fixes issues with client certificates in case there were multiple available which could be used for the web site - Bugfix: When saving web pages as PDF if these were already in PDF format did add additional print margins to the resulting PDF - Bugfix: The native in-page search (available since iOS 16) did not remember the last search terms - Bugfix: Fixes a potential crash for HTTP authentication - Several minor improvements and fixes

- Since iOS 15 there's a new menu item available for the action menu, which allows to directly pause all media output (audio/video). This works on a global level, so you don't need to know which tab plays audio or video content. This menu item is also available in the contextual menu of the Tabs, so you don't need to add an additional item to the action menu. - The user-defined Browser IDs can now have their own name which is used in the list of IDs in the settings. This allows to distinguish the IDs by name instead of by ID. If no name is given, the ID is listed. - In the bookmarks window you can now sort bookmarks in "edit" mode. You can sort by name, URL, label and date - In the "web site" settings there's a new option which allows to automatically redirect Youtube shorts to their "standard" youtube video page. This is useful if you prefer the full featured video player of "normal" youtube videos over the primitive video player of the "shorts". - There are now complications available for the Apple Watch, so it's possible to lanuch the Watch App from within a watch face - The default keyboard shortcut for „Close Tab“ has changed from Cmd-W to Cmd-Shift-W to avoid conflicts with a new shortcut of the Stage Manager on iPads. (Important: The shortcut will change automatically only if the user has not yet done any changes for the shortcuts). - Bugfix: Fixes an issue with the auto-update feature of AdBlock Plus filters - Bugfix: Saving web sites on WebDAV servers did not always work - Bugfix: Searches done in private tabs will no longer added to the search history

- There's a new button available for the toolbar to toggle the display of pictures on web sites. This can be handy if you often switch off or on pictures to speed up site loading because of slow internet connections. - In the "web site" settings it's now possible to switch on/off the detection of XML as RSS (in case XML-based web sites are falsly treated as RSS) - When sharing web pages in reader mode the whole content is now shared by default - For CSS-based filters iCab Mobile is now supporting the special rules „:has-text()“ und „:upwards()“ from the „uBlock“ ad blocker - It's now possible to manually reorder pinned Tabs within the Tabs window - Fixes an issue with overlapping text in reader mode if the font size was increased by a very large factor - Fixes a crash when long-pressing the reload button

- Since iOS 15 the back/forward history of tabs can be restored as well when launching the App - In fullscreen mode the "home indicator" will be hidden now (this is the line at the bottom of the screen which can be used to switch to the home screen) - Deleting private data can be now also assigned to a gesture - The "smart rules" of the downloads allow to automatically export certain downloads to WebDAV servers, like this is possible with Dropbox - The address field now adapts to the font size of the system - Better detection of RSS feeds, in case these have no MIME type nor a file name which gives any hints to an RSS feeds - The Watch App of iCab Mobile is now able to open web sites without showing the privacy warning of the watchOS first - Bugfix: The search within the bookmarks did not always work - Bugfix: The "Read now" option for an item within the reading list did sometimes show the current web site in reading mode instead of the page from the reading list - Bugfix: When switching between private and normal mode the cookies of the normal mode won't be deleting anymore. - Bugfix: It could sometimes happen that the login status of Firefox Sync was lost if the network connection broke down while contacting the Firefox servers.

Reviews of iCab Mobile (Web Browser)

  • Latest update is an utter disaster!!!

I saw one of the bugs I've encountered before fixed (iCab crashing when downloading a large file when there are already some large files downloaded) I eagerly upgraded.
Now it has one of the most ANNOYING bugs ever. When you press and hold a downloaded file to bring up the action menu, the action menu now jumps up and down rapidly making nearly impossible to choose anything.
This is a SERIOUS problem, please fix this ASAP. This should have been caught by regression testing so you better fix your CI/CD pipeline because it's obviously broken (I'm a software developer too).
  • Great app for regaining control of mobile web browsing

iCab should be better known. So should Alexander Clauss. He’s been making useful, lightweight, feature-rich, privacy-preserving and affordable apps for the Apple ecosystem for a long time, charges very little for them (no subscriptions!) and yet still updates them regularly. He embodies the old school shareware ethic that focused on improving people’s lives instead of exploiting every opportunity for profit, which is a breath of fresh air in the current hyper capitalistic environment.
  • Works on fewer and fewer websites

iCab has a lot going for it in terms of tools, usually found in desktop browsers, that make iOS browsing far more secure and private for the user. Unfortunately, it’s works on fewer and fewer websites. I get the impression as the sites improve security and privacy, iCab isn’t keeping up. I have avoided using it for banking or purchases for years. Now finding many sites links become unresponsive. To proceed I have to open Safari.

Overall, it’s sort of ok as a daily driver. But be prepared to find financial sites and shopping carts problematic. 1-star as I’d rate Safari 3 at best and others 1 or 2. iOS is a lousy platform for doing much beyond laying on your back and surfing your life away.
