  • Ugh

Each update seems to put more and more behind a pay wall while blasting us with more and more intrusive and abusive ads. Search, a “new” feature that was recently touted, is gone. I can’t get message than a handful of people who are nearby since the number of profiles not behind a paywall was reduced, and since many people don’t show up when browsing with the travel feature (reduced from 3 to 1 the number you could unlock too message anyway). And those who show up as nearby but outside the range of who I can message are out of order and often nowhere near me, though the app implies they are much closer and all I need to do is purchase a plan at an insane amount for what this app can do. That is misleading at best. Can’t list my instagram handle anymore because I can’t connect the account (and let you sell tracking info to them) due to locked down settings in meta. So that has to be typed manually into the bio again, which takes up previous real estate since bios are so limited. You could put more characters into a tweet that you could with these bios, forcing a lot of people to go to abbreviations and very direct text that comes across as offensive. and I still get notifications even if notifications are turned off in the app or if a thread is muted if I still have the app open in the background. Turning off notifications or muting a thread should do just that at all times, not just when the app is closed.

  • Not a lgbt friendly app

This app was made for GAY MEN and now it’s just lgbtq. Great, fine. Why am I required to have my “100 profiles” filled with people I’m not interested in? Why can’t I filter them out? Also, when I run filters, why do you reorder my “100 profiles” so people move further away even though I adjusted them in a way to try to see a profile down on the list? Why is this app so ridiculously priced that you’d have to be an idiot to pay for it? Who are these idiots and how much are you paying for 5 star reviews? This is not an app for the lgbt community but a greedy company exploiting minorities for selfish financial gain. You already betrayed the lgbt company by selling sensitive information like hiv status. Personally I hope you go bankrupt and lose your jobs. Advice to new users: do not pay for any upgrades. It’s absurdly overpriced. Delete messages from their advertisements as they arrive. Do not interact with ads. Close the app if they spam you with one. Maybe they will make some adjustments. Also, never update the app unless it makes you. They just make it worse and more unusable every update in an effort to force you to pay. Also, I find it disgusting that a hookup app is marketing hiv treatments and test groups. It’s almost like a cigarette company selling cancer treatment drugs and studies. You are simultaneously creating the problem and profiting off the treatment. Unethical.

  • Zero stars

I took a chance and subscribed to Xtra, which had some ok features. But once I cancelled that, and went back to the free version, I had MORE LIMITED access. BEFORE I bought the month subscription, I could explore and chat with THREE people per day. After I came back to free again I can only chat with ONE person. I noticed I can now views LESS profiles than I could before. DO NOT SUBSCRIBE UNLESS YOU PLAN ON PERMANENTLY STAYING THAT WAY. Also, they changed it so if you use one of the free filters like “age” or “online now”, you get a much more limited list of profiles, which actually defeats the purpose of filtering them!!! Not to mention people who have blank or multiple profiles, or people seeking trans partners, or even straight women now using the app to search for straight men - you NEED more filters. I’m not looking for trans partners nor am I trans, I’m definitely not trying to meet straight women, so there should be filters so we aren’t taking up space in each others fields. Having to block profiles more often than I chat with anybody is so exhausting. They keep making this app more useless and it’s hard enough meeting guys these days since these apps killed the dying gay bar scene. Use Scruff or Sniffies at least they aren’t bombarded with nonsensical video game adds and bot profiles.

  • Wrongly banned, Harassed, with no explanation

I have been using the app for years since I’ve turned 18 actually I’m 23 now every year even a couple times a year since I turned 18 I have been harassed banned restricted had to verify my age had to prove that I’m not a fake account had my information blasted on their app from other users. Have had people pretend to be me wrongly being reported and the list goes on. But have a peeled every time and was always right when I appealed and was able to get access again but now for some reason, they won’t tell me why they banded me or what I have done to be band. won’t give me access to my data so I can see what I’ve done wrong. I have every email still from having to prove who I was and everything from all the bands before. To even be told that they would put my email under a special tag so I wouldn’t have to deal with this anymore and was given a free month subscription for compensation. To now getting banned appealed waited for a response to be told that they can’t provide me with any information and and to leave my band on. I am just really upset because I did like this app but since they keep harassing me and keep banning me and after how many times approving, I have done nothing wrong to be permanently banned. I’m writing this bad review because of that and I will be taking all my information to my lawyers for being lied to and harassed for six years. If they don’t figure it this out.

  • More and more wobbly and now broken

This is pretty much a must-have app but they seem determined to drive it into the ground. Taking away free features one by one is their prerogative but they’re breaking the app. Ads pop up while you’re writing a chat response and you have to start over. I frequently review and delete old chats and taps; instead of keeping my place in the list it now jumps up or down and I have to find the same item to delete it. In a conversation, a response I type often doesn’t appear in the chat window until I exit the conversation and reenter. Rinde That’s all annoying. I always hope an update will make things better but the opposite seems to be true. Today's update broke it altogether: now the app doesn’t open at all. On one try I got a message to get the latest version from the App Store but that was the version that got the message. I’ve tried opening it from my list of completed updates, from the App Store, and from my phone screen and their mask icon just spins without opening. Congratulations, Grindr—you’ve killed your app! Last update: I can no longer see profiles in Messages. Can’t see who I talked to before, can’t see who’s messaging me today. Can’t block or report problem accts.

  • A car crash of an app

The company must want this app to be the worst possible version of itself in the worst ways. Locking nearly every feature behind a paywall and pushing ads at every possible corner would make you think that they are trying to pay for the development of a functional app. The reality of it is is that this app is broken at its core now and the user experience is the worst I’ve seen from an app of this nature. The messaging system is broken now most of the time. Constantly getting false notifications for taps and messages only to find that there’s no new activity; my own messages being marked as “new message”; photos failing to load constantly; messages failing to send; UI elements vanishing from the home screen randomly forcing an app restart to get them back; bios are now randomly cutoff; and so much more. Aside from just the technical issues, there’s also the bots issues. So many bots that run rampant on the app. Please implement some form of verification system that doesn’t involve using just a phone number. Tinder and bumble have verified profiles that allow users to submit photos for verification. At least do that to reduce the fake profiles and catfish. So much work needs to be done to make this a usable app again, but right now it’s just absolutely broken.

May 10: these IDIOTS just released an “update” that cut off everybody’s bio. They have given up. They don’t even test anything they release! Would love to work for Grindr so I can get paid to do nothing. DO NOT PAY FOR THIS WILDLY EXPENSIVE APP. The band of incompetents that runs this garbage should be ashamed of itself. FIFTEEN YEARS later and they still can’t get it right! It is truly stupefying! So you fixed some of the recent notification bugs in the last update—congratulations? It only took you several updates over several months to fix what every other app in the universe gets right in version 1.0. Many of my messages STILL get stuck in Sent status and never delivered, blocking STILL does not work, I STILL can’t see taps until I force quit the app, and the app STILL often can’t find my location even when every other location based app on my phone has no issues at. I pre-paid for a year’s subscription for a service that just gets worse, while still showing me ads. Once my subscription is over I will never pay for this app again because THESE PEOPLE DO NOT CARE. Listen to their recent earnings call. Unsurprisingly since they are now public, they only care about monetization at every opportunity, while offering robotic empty words about providing value to customers.

—-April 8 “update” is a miserable failure and absolutely no one is surprised. All I got is a black screen. When the issue finally resolved, I noticed read receipts were gone. Another in a long line of features that pop in and out of existence, even for customers that have PAYED for specific features that are free everywhere else but Grindr thinks are premium.

It angers me to think about how many missed connections I might have due to the bugs on this app. Not to mention that it’s wildly expensive and it’s not for gay men anymore. I pre-paid for a year’s subscription for a service that just gets worse, while still showing me ads. Apple needs to adjust their ratings system because I don’t know how an app that gets so trashed in reviews can still have an overall rating close to 5 stars. Once my subscription is over I will never pay for this app again because THESE PEOPLE DO NOT CARE. Listen to their recent earnings call. All these people are about is monetization at every opportunity, while offering robotic empty words about providing value to customers.
