Disappointing
Emailed for tech support as maybe can change some settings to help - no reply at all ( as usual) Sad as used to love and recommend this to everyone I met / AVOID this app - have tried to get support or a refund but as usual was ignored - don’t waste your money
Incorrect and probably dangersous
Could be so much better
Apart from the frustrations of having to redownload maps on occasions, being forced into subscriptions, becoming progressively slower - more so after the latest release, being prompted for suggestions about how to improve the user experience but not getting any feedback here are three things I would like to be incorporated.
1. Enable your recordings to be sorted chronologically not numerically as it is very frustrating when trying to look back over your journeys
2. To be able to freeze the current scale when zooming. Different information is given at different resolutions, using it in the car is totally different to using it for walking. Finding a route in the car does not need detail information and it is very frustrating just when the size of text is readable it suddenly shrinks and the information you want disappears. The size of the screen and resolution of the device makes a big difference to what you can actually see as does having older eyes.
3. When reopening the app, more often then not, I would like to return to the same selection.
Unable to purchase maps in new version
Also, I was confused to find the new version asking for a password when I hadn’t created one. I tried contacting you by email and via your web site for help, but you didn’t respond to either. Eventually I worked out myself that if I just created a new login, then your app would find my previous purchases, presumably using my email. But very poor customer service not to respond, and I can see other users have given poor reviews for this same issue.
So near and yet so far
I've purchased the app and one county @ 25,000:1 resolution. This has cost me £35 which would be very good value if the thing couild do what it says on the tin. Fix the known problems and it wil be a five star app.
Now where did I put my paper map?
Re: where is the ‘my routes on website’ tab??
UPDATE: the team have responded to my feedback and the search facility has improved in the latest version. However, I disagree with the removal of the ‘my routes on website’ button. Firstly, the automatic syncing is not obvious - I had to be told about it. Secondly, I don’t want all my routes on my website on my phone. Before, I could just choose which ones I wanted to download. I have therefore increased my star rating, but I’m not sure the ‘improvements’ have actually made my user experience better.
Response from developer
Thanks for the feedback Miranda. In the latest version of the app everything is synced between the app and our website so is now just single list of all your routes which is why "my routes on website" is no longer needed. We've also releases a few updates since you left this review so please download the latest version (v5.0.3 or later) and you'll see a lot of improvements to search. If you're still running into any issues after updating please email us at ios-support@outdoorsgps.com so we can help you resolve them. We'd appreciate you updating your review once you've confirmed everything has been fixed.
Stunning offline OS maps
Being able to access detailed offline maps (no mobile signal) is a great bonus.
The support is amazing when I’ve needed them, which is twice.
Everything sorted without drama and very quickly.
I still use paper maps, but this is a major bonus.
The best phone mapping tool
I find and plan my own routes using the website route builder. Also import GPX routes other people have created or I’ve paid for and keep them private for my own use.
If you pay for the online OS map subscription you can log on whilst on WiFi it 3/4G and move in and out of the route map area to cache the tiles for when you’re out of signal range.
I love that you move between 25k and 50k when zooming in as I would never buy both before and try make do with 25k. I also use google maps and google satellite when route planning. Having all these map tools at your disposal makes it very clear.
Personally if I’m going to be doing a lot of complex route navigation in a wilderness area, I still buy the offline map for reassurance.
Yes, you need to either buy OS maps for the area you’re going to or pay for the unlimited access. You can’t rely on free google maps when you’re in the middle of the countryside halfway up a mountain!
Yes, navigation is battery intensive. Screen + gps + searching for signal in poor signal areas is battery intensive. Take a power pack with you.
Still the best of the bunch but re-downloading maps when subscription auto-renews needs fixing...
Stability, mapping implementation, functionality and power consumption are all superb.
Only 1 complaint and 1 suggestion.
It's really annoying having to re-download maps when the subscription rolls over.
I've had a week of nags to renew subscription. As this is set to auto-renew in my appleID there is no way to invoke the renewal manually. Today I loaded up the app and all my maps apart from those downloaded in the last few days have gone. The old lifetime-purchase maps reappear on refreshing the store, but all have to be redownloaded as well as more recent OS unlimited downloads.
As I'm currently away from home with patchy 3G at best this is a slow process!
iPhone SE and iPad mini3 cellular.
Up-to-date iOS and app versions.
And my suggestion.... Give an option of OS Opendata for the 1:25k/1:10k zoom in.
The proper 1:25k detail is almost airways best - for field boundaries etc - but the road/house/farm name detail and more recent survey info on Opendata would be great to view in the app.
