  • Shows promise, but too cute for its own good if they don't improve it

I like this app, in theory. I really like new UI concepts. But, the authors are almost too cute with it here- it needs work. Not much is obvious and the help is *very* thin. You have to go to their website to get complete help- something you can't do with a WiFi iPad outside of coverage. It would be better to have the help self-contained.

Overall, it is clever. But it also crashes very frequently, and I've given up using it because I can't get an aether saved. Once the app exits, it's gone- it's not there if I come back a few days later. I've redone the same calculations 3 times now. I'll have to go back to Excel until a better version of this comes out.

So, yes, they rethought the UI, but to the point that NOTHING is obvious. I appreciate the aether concept and floating cells, really I do. I love mind maps and this is the mind map of math. Just they need to be more reliable around saving and managing multiple ethers. But sometimes do you really have to reinvent every last shred of UI concept- even the ones that are good already?

Update: Oovium updated yesterday claiming to fix numerous crashing bugs. I quit using it before since it crashed and lost my data before I could even save it. Now, it crashes at launch. Launch, crash, launch, crash. The splash screen is up for just a fraction of a second. I have iPad 2 with the latest OS updates. I power cycled it just to make sure to clear out the memory, to no avail. Launch, crash... I'm not sure what type of QA these folks do or what design methodology they use. The app has been useless to me from the start, despite my hopeful optimism for its outside the box design. Sorry...

  • Needs Polish....

This app promises to be quite powerful, but for me fell short. The GUI needs to be slicker and more polished and it crashed a few times on first use.

I struggled to get rid of the help demo after first use as well.

Strong concept but needs more work.
  • It's a start.

Certain aspects are portrait orientation only like the very minimalistic in app so called tutorial, the aether, etc. in app documentation is terribly lacking.
  • Truly brilliant idea, but crash-prone and poor docs

This is a brilliant idea, but the execution is lacking, plus the documentation could be much better. I've managed to crash it 5 times in the last 15 minutes experimenting with it. I just love the concept, and wish this developer would spend all his effort on rock-solid stability and error handling/recovery, not to mention improve the documentation. This is a beta at best right now, but one with great promise. My equation for this app: 5 stars for the idea minus 2 stars for its lack of stability and good documentation.

  • Promising

Happy to contribute to such a creative approach to tablet-based calculation, which is sorely lacking IMO. I find conventional spreadsheets are annoying and unsuitable for the tablet interface. None of them rank over 3 stars in the store, and I completely understand why. I believe this one could get to 5 given the obvious talent of the developer. From an engineering POV, this is my idea of a great app for entering lab measurements with a library of functions for post-processing the data (a critical use-case I believe for adoption). The only major things I am missing after creating my first function library and dependent ether are strings, constants, and units. The minor issues associated with automatic numeric representation and column widths will undoubtedly work themselves out in near-term updates. I get it ... start with the simplest interface and add complexity only when unavoidable. This is very impressive given the current readiness level. Thanks for yet another reason for employers to issue iPads. I'm very much looking forward to the complete implementation of the vision (suspense deadly). Recommendation: Buy now before the price goes way up.

  • I like this but...

This is an innovative app and I like it but it keeps crashing. Is it this update?

Also could do with a comprehensive set of instructions.

I'd like to try Oovium Mindmap but am reluctant to buy in case that crashes too.

I've noticed the forum has no entries since September, is this app still supported/under development?

  • Go Elsewhere

Revised this review upward because of the developer helping me through the problems I was having. Testing of releases could be better.
  • Cool and frustrating

This will become Hari Seldon's Prime Radian some day. A manual for dead tree reproduction would be nice.
  • Accurate calculations

I followed the tutorial and wow was it accurate in the end!
  • Super great app!

By far the most entertaining calculator out there, a eat app to make and store formulas. Powerful stuff!!! I had been looking for an app that I could program easy formulas and use as needed, and this app does that and soo much more!!!!
