  • Top class navigation app

I’ve had this app for 5 years and during that time been shown other contenders. However, I have yet to find anything that is as good and reliable.
You need to ensure you read the instructions but it is by far the best and most accurate way I have ever used to plot a route and then follow it.
The function that allows you to download various maps is also invaluable if you are out of a decent mobile data signal, meaning you can navigate without the need to use data.
    Highly recommended.

  • Only Subscription

I will not pay a monthly subscription fee. When I first downloaded this app I could purchase maps. I spent a LOT of money buying the maps of areas I was visiting. When I next came back to the app, I couldn’t buy any more maps. I still have access to the ones I did purchase, but they won’t sell any more. They now want a monthly subscription fee. So I’ve switched to OSMaps and started buying their maps. I only keep this app for use in the areas where I own the maps. I’m a very unhappy customer.

  • Constantly Crashes

Update. Appears to be working again with no loss of data. Would give higher score if there was some feedback from customer services on the issues and fix. Will see how it performs over the next few weeks before deciding whether to cancel subscription.

Have used this app for a number of years without any issues but stopped working over the weekend. Just crashes out every time you try to load it. Tried all the fixes but to no avail. Have reported on your help desk but no response so have reported to Apple. Hopefully this will be fixed soon or will try for a refund through Apple support.

  • No customer service contact whatsoever

I downloaded this app and paid for the premium service. I then had trouble accessing the account and tried to change my password several times to no avail. It simply did not send me an email link to change it, even though it said it had. I opened a separate account and found that would allow me to change my password but of course that didn’t give me access to the premium service, which was associated with a different email address.

No problem I thought, I’ll contact customer services. There’s no number to ring to speak to a human being but that seems to be par for the course now with many companies which annoys me no end. Instead I had the option to send them a message through the website, which I did, twice without any response. So I’ve paid £20 for a service I can’t access and the company who has taken my money won’t speak to me. I am not impressed.

  • It’s cheaper for a reason

In the 6 consecutive years I’ve paid for the Pro version of this app it has slowly slipped far behind its competitors in terms of functionality and reliability. It needlessly adopted a more clumsy interface a few years ago. Customer service has been very poor, particularly if you are an experienced user and have an issue that’s about anything more than the basic operations. Responses have been formulaic and not specific to my questions. Over the past few years I notice more and more that the Explorer 1:25,000 maps used are old and out of date. I regularly find the detail contained on their OS map versions is not as up to date as the detail on the Explorer maps used on the OS Maps app itself. I guess they don’t bother paying the license for the most up to date mapping and hope the majority of their customers will never notice!

  • Great app, now with useless maps for walking

This was a fantastic app (had a few issues syncing with the web routes but not a big issue) but now they have just switch from OpenStreetMap to Mapbox which has no useful detail on them for walking - no idea why the retrograde step. Added to that you have to take out two OS (Ordanance Survey) subscriptions, one for the web based portal and another for the App ........ it’s now either useless or expensive depending on your point of view. A few years ago you could buy individual OS maps, now you have to get a subscription for all of them.

So while the app is actually fantastic the underlying map data makes it a waste of time for me. Such a shame. I have now switched to the OS official app.

  • Depends on your requirements

Have been using this app for several years. It does what it says on the tin. No complaints until now. Up until recently you could purchase the OS maps you required, which I did. Now purchase of individual maps is no longer possible. You now have to pay yearly (or monthly?) to an OS map subscription view. Am not sure if this due to OS or not. Not worth it for me but each individual will see it differently. It is £20 pa as I write (Jan 2021) but once locked in who knows. The OS "official" app allows you to purchase a paper map with a digital map download included. So... my choice now is the official OS app. Shame really. Looks like I will have to use both apps - Outdoorsgps for maps already purchased and OS app for new purchases. Some may say buying a few maps will cost more than £20 but I will own them...forever!! And I still love paper maps. Hope this helps you make a choice.

  • Simple but now has lost basic safety features

Revising this review - I’ve had this app for 5-6 years. Originally provided great info like height, speed and grid ref. Now this is only available when recording and the grid ref has disappeared. This reduces battery life and to my mind has taken away a key safety feature for an outdoor app.

If you have the map downloaded then you can see the blue dot, but this is not always the case (esp if you are a legacy user).

Otherwise: Great app to have in your back pocket in case of navigation problems with paper :-). Easy to download your maps, route planning very helpful and accurate and ties in to website where you can back up routes. Never had it fail on me when I needed it and offline functionality saves battery and can be used outside network coverage. App team respond when questions asked - unlike some other apps. Record function uses battery - but that's common to all such apps.

  • Still not as good as it used to be

I’ve been using this app for almost 6 years. Great to record walks. I’ve bought many of the OS maps and saved over 400 walks onto my phone. To do this you do need a phone with good storage. Sadly the new ‘rebuilt’ version seems to have taken a backward step. It cannot distinguish different walks from the same start point (highlighted to developer in the summer) and is not so reliable in tracking walks. Also doesn’t have capacity to save walks online which previous version did (though annoyingly only 100 walks). Hopefully the developer will sort out some urgent fixes to what was a really great App, particularly given the amount myself and presumably many others have invested in the purchasing the lifetime maps.
I am also frustrated that these maps have still not been updated and that there is no longer the option to purchase individual maps.

  • Not what it used to be 👎🏻

I have used this app for several years and it was excellent - mostly used for reference and planning routes rather than recording. Since the update(s) earlier this year it has become much less user friendly and there are some glitches which have not been fixed (eg elevation profiles do not update correctly and show 0m for any added / altered points; elevation gain on planned routes only shows difference between lowest and highest point (not actual elevation gain on undulating routes); all my recorded/planned routes have rearranged; and it does not allow you to see your position / elevation without starting to record). I have contacted the developer several times - they have responded but nothing has changed in several months and the problems still persist. When my annual subscription ends in January I will be moving to ViewRanger. Shame, as this used to be an excellent app but has deteriorated significantly.
