It's one of the best free games of this genre out there. The audio is great and the graphics are really well done. You can get killed in one hit after you die and restart a level. The gameplay is challenging, and I can't get past the second level, but that's because Im a noob.
Definitely needs more levels. The levels are challenging, but I've passed all 8, I can assure everyone they're possible to beat, so you can't really complain that they're "impossible" and give the game a bad rating because of it.
If this game had constant updates, or at least new levels frequently and what not, I have no doubt in my mind it would be among the top 25 paid games in the app store.
Edit: In-App purchases? Thats just no.. Ruins the game, ruins ratings. What a shame.
I'm not a fan of arcade/jump n run games but I've been playing this one over and over. It was free when I got it, it's got great gfx and sound and it'll keep you busy for quite a while (yes it's hard but never unfair IMO); to all the whiners: if you really want the fancy fighter planes and you can't beat the game on hard then give the developers one dollar and shut up - you played that game for free remember?!?
I really enjoy this simple to play game. I loved the 1945 arcade game when i was young, and this takes me back to that kind of fun. I am very surprised how well the touch controls can be used to play this style of game. It seemed like a bad idea to me although after i tred i really enjoyed it. I must comment howevrt two things (i wish i had a email address for the developer) the Bomb button and life meter are in the lower left corner (I, and i think most players are right handed) when using my right hand for touch controls i can not see my current life or activate the bomb without lifting my "control" hand momentarily amlmost always leading to death???? if the meter and button were moved to the top of the screen there would be no sacrifice to gameplay and it would be so easy to use my left thumb (which is already there!) to activate bombs and also easy to see my life meter! I really hope the developer reads theses comments... this game is so awesome! i really enjoy it.. also side note, My itouch battery gets serioulsy drained when I play this game! (version 4 with camera and retina display) I almost have to leave it plugged in if i want to play for 20 or 30 minutes!

This is by far the best game for the iPhone! The controls are accurate and having the option to decide how you maneuver your craft is an excellent touch that just makes the game that much more appealing. No lag during gameplay,sweet graphics,and an awesome soundtrack make this game fun to play with some good headphones! I would totally pay for this game and I can't believe it was free-if you enjoy vertical shooters this game will tickle your fancy!!
This is probably one of the best if not the best shooter I've played on my iPhone. Tight controls, awesome graphics, great sound. BUT, I believe when designing shooters made for a touch screen there shouldn't be enemies that appear from behind you. I mean I'm good at shooters, I've been playin them since space invaders. But even I can't see through my finger to see what enemies are coming from behind. And unfortunately in this game they come from behind a whole lot. If they didn't have enemies coming from your blind spot then this would have been a five star hands down, heck even if they didn't come from behind as often I'd give it a five star but unfortunately that's not the case. Great game overall though.
I've noticed several people need some help with this awesome game, so here goes:
First of all, if normal difficulty is too hard, select easy mode.
When it asks you to select a plane, chose the p38 ( the one that looks like two planes stuck together.)
When you start playing, make sure to keep your plane around the middle of the screen, so no enemies can ram you from behind.
Destroy the land-based turrets ASAP, as they usually have a high rate of fire.
There are two weapons pickups. A green one with spread out barrels and a brown one with forward facing barrels. ALWAYS choose the forward facing one!
If you have to make a choice when grabbing extra point, then these are your priorities: medals, gold stars, silver stars.
Save your bombs for the bosses.
Get to know how diff. Enemy types behave.
If a mini-boss comes, focus your fire on him, but don't use bombs!
Anyways, the only improvements this game could get are:
The ability to Play from any unlocked level.
Openfeint support.
More levels.
& full Retina display.
Oh, and BTW I'm on level seven on easy mode without buying any planes and it was a piece of cake.....
The graphics look great, the game has cool music, and it's a throwback to a classic. The only problem I had was with the controls. Since your finger is the controller, it becomes rather difficult to maneuver around enemy fire; thus making it next to impossible to complete some attack waves without taking damage. I'd imagine the problem only exists when using smaller devices (iPhone, iPod). Aside from that, there is some fun to be had from this game- especially because it's free!
Everything is exactly right in this game: definitely not easy, but not frustratingly hard either. I like you can restart where you died, so you don't have to start all over again (as was the case in swift on the Amiga). The bomb all option is also nice. Well done, have been looking for this game for the iPhone.
Hand blocking part of the screen controlling the plane is already bad enough, you made it extra annoying by having enemies and shots coming from the back, which you cannot see most of the times because they're covered by your hand. -1 star for lack of weapons. - 2 stars from getting hit from the back that you can't prevent.
