  • High quality product for iPad.

I couldn't find anything better than Lingvo app and engine. With several improvements I could add another star. The Improvements needed (IMHO) are
    1) buttons on them should have size settings as well
    2) the search sometimes is slow
    3) system panel on the bottom should be possible to hide
    4) larger button for speaker - I use extra large font but the speaker is tiny.
Overall very happy with the detail and accuracy of content. Especially happy with a clean interface. After latest update keeps asking for buyers password - very annoying. Roll this feature back, if possible.

  • Frustrating mistake

As a person who uses russian every day, I used to live and die by this app. I bought expansions, etc. But now, for some reason, they've removed ALL the stress marks (ударения) from the words and examples. I cannot express how angry this makes me. Anyone who uses russian knows how important it is to know where the stress is in the word. I don't know why ABBYY decided to do this but it was a terrible decision and has all but killed my use of this app. Now, I'll probably use Slovoed instead because they've still got stress marks.

  • Mr

Very useful application, very easy to use and probably the best on the
market. I have had the pleasure of using English-Russian Lingvo dictionaries for 10 years and have never had a translation error. I really appreciate systematic categorization, multiple meanings of words and phrases including translations from medical, science, etc dictionaries on this portable edition. Installation without problems on iPhone 4. I did not use online search option.

  • Great all-in-one dictionary

It's nice to finally have all of my dictionaries in one place with full pronunciation, lists of inflected forms and even idiom dictionaries. The icon is attractive, the photo scanning function on the iPhone app works perfectly, and you can set it to automatically search copied text making it a good choice for reading in foreign languages. The only problem I've encountered is the download speed for downloading the dictionary and sound files. I have a broadband connection with 50mps and it still takes a good hour or so, with the phone plugged in to download a 170mb sound file. Maybe this is because the company is located in Russia, but this is terribly annoying. You also have to disable auto lock on your iPhone to complete the download because the download will turn off as soon as the iPhone goes to sleep. But everything else is nearly perfect and contrary to what other reviewers have said, there is a "Restore Purchases" button that allows you to redownload your purchased dictionaries on any of your iOS devices.

  • Best English-Russian, Russian-English dictionary for iOS

Bottom line: high quality product from a respectable company. A little expensive (if you plan to purchase many dictionaries), but the user experience and consistency throughout the app is superb. Plus it has many other languages available.
  • Mostly good, some bad

The good: The extended dictionaries are more comprehensive than other offerings and include alternative definitions and examples.

The bad: The main one is the cost. This dictionary's value over free and lower-cost alternatives is in the special, more extensive dictionaries and they cost at least 30 USD. The other issue is that the camera translate function can't always recognize text. I have yet to use this option successfully.

  • Very disappointed in Polish states.

I use lingvo to study and improve English for many years and really think it's the best for it. It very helped me in the very beginning of my language practice, so I've chosen it to be my guide in Polish this year.

I took this program to my iPod and unfortunately found out there is only quite poor English to Polish dictionary there. I thought, "Well, ok, maybe they just want to get more money with a good vocabulary. I can buy an additional one for $15 — they always do such a great work!" And bought Collins that was proposed inside lingvo (no choice, no other dictionaries or vocabularies). And what do I see now? No phrases, no word forms. If I'm a newbie (and I am), I can't even compose a sentance. I'm really disappointed.

  • I think it's pretty good

Admittedly all of the dictionaries may not be as comprehensive as we might like, but I myself have been able to find many of the words I've needed to look up, especially in the purchased dictionaries. As far as archaic words and those from more remote historical periods, that is a different story, but that's to be expected, as there are relatively few historical dictionaries available on the open market, and most of these they want an arm and a leg for. Of course they are also available in many public libraries.
For more speed you may just need to update your software. I recently updated my iPad to (I think an iOS 5.0) and all my apps seem to run a little faster. I can't speak for anyone else, but as for me, I'm a satisfied customer.

  • The best dictionary in the palm of you hand

I have used ABBYY for years and the app works as well as the desktop program. All of the functions are the same, and the interface is easy to use. In short, a must for people studying Russia as a second language.
  • In-app purchase dictionaries are the problem

Spend more than $30 on dictionaries but after lost backup in iTunes after system upgrade lost them all. Now bought SlovoEd app instead that I can use on both my iPhone and iPad with no need to buy it if I will ever reset my I-device or would by new. If not this really annoying and disappointing feature, Lingvo would be a really nice app. Maybe next time ...
