4.8.2

December 1, 2023

- New: For services with mulitple configurations (e.g. SMB, FTP, S3) the order of the configurations can now be changed - New: When uploading to S3 & Wasabi PhotoSync now sets the "X-Amz-Meta-Mtime" header to the recording date of the photo & video. This header can also be interpreted by many 3rd party applications. When enabling the new option "Query Recording date" PhotoSync will use this information to enable sorting by recording date when browsing photos & videos on S3 & Wasabi. Note: Enabling this option may slow down performance as it requires an additional query for each photo/video. - New: When uploading to Backblaze, PhotoSync now sets the "X-Bz-Info-src_last_modified_millis" to the recording date of the photo & videos. This information is now also used when browsing Backblaze in PhotoSync, allowing sorting by recording date. - Fixed: Issues with encrypted video uploads to S3, Wasabi and Backblaze. We recommend re-uploading these videos to an encrypted S3, Wasabi or Backblaze destination. - Fixed: Wrong extension for XMP sidecar files, when "Keep original names" was enabled in "Expert Settings" - Fixed: Videos were not recorded for more than 12 seconds in some cases when using the PhotoSync camera - Fixed: PhotoSync now ignores when a USB or Wi-Fi camera disconnects (or goes to sleep) while a transfer is in progress - Fixed: Transfers to SMB could result in error 22 in rare cases (e.g. when the target volume is exFAT formatted and mounted with fuse) - Improved thumbnail loading performance for S3 based services New in Version 4.8 ------------------- - New: Client-Side Encryption (Premium) Encrypt photos & videos before transfer and store them encrypted on NAS and file-based cloud services. Browse and view encrypted photos & videos directly in PhotoSync. Rclone and OpenSSL are supported, enabling easy workflow integration and seamless decryption on PC and Mac. - New: Improved metadata support Embedding metadata is now supported without re-encoding for most file types. PhotoSync can now also embed modified recording dates and tag photos / videos based on user album name, Moments / location name or media type. - New: XMP support XMP sidecar files containing all metadata information can now be transferred. This feature is optimal for integration into professional workflows. Configurable options: XMP files are always transferred; only for photos with edited metadata; only for RAW files with edited metadata; or never. - New: "Display" option to detect modified / edited photos & videos as new: If you edit a photo or video after it has been transferred, PhotoSync will detect the photos / videos as new and the edited version will be re-transferred. This setting can be enabled under "Display Options" (iOS 16 and later). - New: PhotoSync can now retain the whole album / folder structure when transferring between iOS devices. To enable this feature enable "Keep Album Structure (iOS only)" under Configure->Phone/Tablet. Preserving the favorite status and location info is supported when transferring between iOS devices. - New: The PhotoSync Camera can now embed copyright info - New: Added an option "Set transfer time/date only once" for sub-directory creation. This way only one sub-directory is created for every transfer session. - New: Added a new custom format %SP for custom sub-directory creation based on media type (Live Photo, Screenshots...) - New: Added new custom formats %MOT and %MOL to add the Moments title and Moments location into the file name or sub-directory name - New: Added an option "Assign Live Photo MOV to photo folder" for sub-directory creation. When enabling this option both files of a Live Photo are stored in the photos folder, when the %2P or %3P format is used. - New: Added option "Upload in Chunks" for WebDAV connections. This option is helpful e.g. for WebDAV servers proxied by CloudFare - New: Added host key checks for SFTP connection - New: Added an option to convert ProRes Videos to H264 or HEVC

Reviews of PhotoSync

  • Seriously Unimpressed

The concept for photo and video transfers is rather simple, but PhotoSync developers have this process all over the map. They don't properly display nor distinguish between source and destination within their program. They have a wealth of options, and the capabilities appear to be there, but the app is kludgy and they have made it more complex than is necessary. They claim that the wi-fi interface and file transfer is fast...but I disagree. I invariably have to put the IP address in the browser and download the zipped file...and it's not fast. I have had the program crash during wi-fi attempts routinely, and my system is state of the art. I also connected via USB port, and it's still fercockt. I cannot imagine how it's gotten the rating it shows.

    Developer Response

    1. The web browser access you used is an emergency option for people who cannot install PhotoSync Companion on their computer (lack of admin rights, etc.) and does not provide the full transfer speed (due to zipping) and all the features that PhotoSync offers. So we understand that your experience was rather underwhelming. On a good 5Ghz connection using PhotoSync Companion you will typically get transfer speeds of 40MB/sec and above. 2. The reason for the application suggesting the web browser based method in your case is most likely due to a network configuration issue and your computer blocking incoming connections. If you are using Windows, please ensure that your network environment is configured as 'private' and not 'public'. Third-party security/firewall applications may also be blocking incoming connections. 3. Most users will want to transfer/backup from the iOS photo library and that's what the interface is built around as the focus. If you have any suggestions for improvements, please let us know. 4. 3rd party iOS applications cannot directly access the USB port (for connecting to a computer). There are workarounds to use the USB connection to a computer (e.g. enabling the personal hotspot), but the transfer to/from the computer is primarily via Wi-Fi. Unless you have an iPhone 15 Pro (USB 3), Wi-Fi is also faster than USB on a good 5GHz network. For detailed support and feedback please contact support@photosync-app.com. We are happy to help and can respond much more quickly and in detail via email than here in the AppStore review section, which is not really suited to in-depth support.
  • Better than all the rest!

A lot of photo sync apps advertise to be similar to Photosync but there is no comparison. This is the only sync app that reliably transfers over 10,000 photos in one shot. No fuss. No interruptions. No missed syncs. And the screen stays awake during the whole sync that may take hours, if you have thousands of photos like me.
It skips photos that were already copied to my Linux SMB server and it shows you the skipped photos in the progress window. There is a setting that skips copying if the filename and file size matches.
The file on the SMB server has the same date/time as the original photo.
If the photo hasn't been sync'ed, its thumbnail has a blue border to let you know.
Autotransfer syncs new photos when I come home and at a set time every day.
It is easy to select a large range of photos: Double-tap the start of the range, tap the end of the range.
But it easy to just re-sync ALL photos with a tap. Yes, re-sync 10,000 photos is no problem!
There are handy counters at the bottom of the screen telling you how many photos are in the album, how many are selected, and how many are new.
Useful setting: Save with filename made of the [Recording date] + [Name]. This ensures every photo is saved with a unique filename, so none are overwritten on the server.
Tech Support was over email and very good!
Premium level is worth the money for reliable photo backups.
  • Backwards photo order? + Some albums not showing up? Help!

I’m currently transferring all my photos/videos from iPhone to iPhone (this app is the method I chose to transfer all my photos/videos over after I got my iCloud account stolen). Everything seems to be working great—I can see my photos and videos in full res, I can see the location/time data, and live photos are showing up perfectly! However, everything in the Recents album is showing up chronologically backwards… Instead of the most recent being at the bottom of the album, it is at the very top, which is so inconvenient for a long time Apple user… Is there any way I can fix this? Also, the albums other than “Recents” and “Favorites” don’t seem to be transferring over. For example, I don’t see my Snapchat album or my Instagram album that I have on my original iPhone. The pictures saved from these different apps are supposed to show “Saved from Snapchat,” “Saved from Instagram,” etc.“ but the pictures don’t show that with the transfer. If there is any way I can fix this, this app would be super helpful. Please let me know if there’s a solution to these or if the solutions can be included in the next update! If so, I’ll update my review to 5 stars!!! Please and thank you!!!

    Developer Response

Thanks for your feedback. 1) As PhotoSync's main purpose it to transfer photos/videos we think it makes sense to have the newest photos/videos listed first. However, you can of course change the sort order. To do so please open the PhotoSync settings. Then tap "Display Options" and then "Sort Order" and select "Oldest First" 2) The iOS Photo Library is organised in a way that all photos/videos are stored in "Recents". User albums (e.g. "Saved from Snapchat") contain only references to the original in "Recents". If you want PhotoSync to create user albums when transferring from "Recents", please perform the following steps on the sending device: a) Open the PhotoSync settings and tap "Configure" and then "Phone/Tablet" and enable "Keep album structure". If you have any more questions, please write a quick mail to support@photosync-app.com. We are happy to help! By mail we can answer much quicker and also more detailed than here in the review section of the AppStore, which is not really suited for support.
