Magicangel the game states at the top this is a LITE version, why would anyone bother releasing games if they were going to give them away for free, it takes months of hard work! It's a business not a charity. This game costs like 50x more on other devices. You should be thanking the devs for releasing this for a measly $3 you can't even buy a sandwich for that price these days.

This game would be good but I can't stand the border or the controls when I saw this was only $3 I planned to buy it instantly but then I realized there was no full version and I had to download the lite first, then after downloading the lite and seeing the border and bad controls I decided against it , even with its insanely low price I just can't get used to the border and the controls, I'm always crouching instead of walking I'd rather just a D pad with no joystick, and I'd rather the graphics be all stretched then to have the border, it's impossible to play on iPad, Its really not universal at all, it's just a big border with a tiny screen inside. What a waste of a good game. I hope the devs do fix it

  • Touch Screen Flop

I have always preferred digital controls opposed to touch screen. The D-Pad on the DSi and even the Slide pad on the 3DS are superior to the touch screen, just in this case (and I still support WayForward)
tl;dr- better on DSi and 3DS
  • Great retro style game

Ever since reading reviews on this game back when it came out for DSi I wanted to try it but I only had a DS lite. I came close to buying a 3DS to get access to it but stopped myself. What a pleasant surprise to find it on iPhone, and at a $3 introductory rate no less!
Now that I have access to the game I'm glad to say it does not disappoint. I've seen it described as a cross between Metroid and Castlevania and I would agree with this. The exploration elements of Metroid and the action of Castlevania. This is a very good combination because one without the other would be a little dull. The graphics are charming. Pixelated like a 16 bit era game but very well drawn and animated. Where I wish I was using a DS is with the control. A touch d-pad is no replacement for a true one. For the difficulty level of this game it is good enough, but I feel I could play better if I had a real D-pad which is a little frustrating at times. Overall excellent game! Hope there's a third.

  • 16 bit charm comes to iOS

Considering the sheer lack of good quality platformers that hark back to the days of the snes, this game comes as a pleasant surprise.
Graphically, it doesn't try to be anything but a good looking pixelated platformer. Animations are smooth and even the virtual controls are better than most; the music matches the mood of the game perfectly as well.
Characters have charm and personality, and Shantae is an unusual yet likeable protagonist, how many belly dancing heroines have graced the side scrolling world?
Many will hate the blue border of doom, but for me, it doesn't interfere with the game, though an option to remove it would be pretty cool!
All in all, if the days of the snes and megadrive are your idea of gaming heaven, then you won't get much closer to it than this little gem.

  • The high-production platformer you've been waiting for!

I've been waiting and waiting...and it's finally here! Risky's Revenge is the sequel to the 2002 game Shantae on Game Boy Color. Platformers are my favorite console game genre and even after playing quite a few in the App Store, I must say Risky's Revenge has the best virtual d-pad in an iOS platformer by far. Pulling off tricky jumps feels natural and the d-pad is the closest an iOS game has gotten to emulating actual buttons. WayForward mentioned they worked really hard to get the controls right and they've certainly succeeded. The retro-styled graphics are awesome, animations are stunning, and character portraits are simply gorgeous. If you have a Retina device, you're in for some real eye candy! The story is charming, dialogue is great, environments are rich in color, characters are funny, gameplay is tight...I could go on and on. If you missed out on the DSiWare release of Risky's Revenge, this is the high-production platformer you've been waiting for and the iOS release is the definitive version to have! Go for it!

  • ALMOST PERFECT

The game has great graphics, charming characters and most importantly a tight control system that feels polished and refined. So far everything about this game takes me back to the days of 16-bit gaming. The only complaint is that there is no way to access the main menu from within the game. The only pause feature is, I'm assuming, the "stuff" screen. If this game had a way to pause and access the main menu it could very well be one of, if not the best platformer I've seen on iOS.

Overall it's still a very good game and the wait has been worth it! Definitely worth $2.99.

  • Near perfect, two quibbles.

This game is fantastic. The animation is spectacular, the design excellent. Only two interface issues pull it away from five stars for me:

    1. The interface "around" the game screen is exceedingly poor. It does not match the game, and should be re-drawn in a pixelated style similar to the lovely art. Fine, use system fonts if you must, but be aware that they detract from the throwback style.

    2. The control stick really needs to have an option for a "non static" stick. One that centers where you drop your thumb, and bases center on wherever that is. See Chaos Rings and more recently Mage Gauntlet for this. Bigger buttons on the right couldn't hurt either.
