Love the app!

Pros- the app makes it very easy to plan rides. I like that I can see the miles and elevation gains before I leave my house. It’s nice knowing what I’m getting into for the trip. I also like that I can download the maps after I plan the ride. You can still use the gps directions even when you don’t have service.

Cons- it can be tricky out figuring out how to plan your trips. There are a lot of options so it can be a bit cumbersome finding what you need. Easy to navigate once you figure it out though. Also they do charge you per area after your first download. But it’s worth the it!

Very good Mountainbike navigation app! Highly recommended!!!

I ´ve tried many apps for creating individual Mountainbike routes at home and use the navigation system offline because of the lack of connection in the Austrian Mountains and mostly got disappointed . But this app fulfills all my criterias for guidet Mountainbike fun. Even if I take a wrong turn in the woods ,it finds an alternative track to guide me safely to my chosen destination! I am glad i found this app! It is soo much more fun to ride the mountains without having fear to get possibly lost or head all the way back uphill if you took the wrong turn. Thank you Komoot !!!

Komoot - an excellent cycling navigator

We have been using Komoot in conjunction with another cycling navigation application during our journey through Germany and Poland. It has some excellent features and is one of the easiest to follow as you ride. We have been using the iPhone version on an iPad so not ideal but today I note my application has been upgraded to an iPad version which looks great. It still has some rough edges which is why I only gave it 4 stars but I think I will be using Komoot for many years to come.

Great app for walking and cycling

We’re in Europe on holiday and looking for some good walking and cycling routes. This has exceeded all expectations. Thanks.

Good

I’ve been using this for two weeks now first time I used it I let Komoot plan the route. You have to be careful if you use the racing bike mode as it will take you on really busy roads. On touring mode be careful on muddy tracks. The second time I used it I imported a route from Ridewithgps it did really
well. I ride a recumbent trike it took me a while to figure out how to hear the voice navigation I’m a bit deaf anyway. I couldn’t hear it through my headphones so I put phone in my bumbag and put that across my body with the bag near my shoulder. One strange thing is you come to a sharp bend and it will tell you it is a turning. Overall I’m happy to this app. I bought the complete package of maps this covers the whole world. One tip is they give you free region map to play with. The whole map package will cost £29 to start with but if you wait it will come in on a special deal for £19.

Great App, must have!

I have found the app to be very good when planning cycling trips involving existing local trails. It's easy to use and has helped me in getting further off the beaten track. Check the planned route as it prioritises cycle paths which seemed to always take a longer route than the road route.

Could be improved

Great app and web site for exploring parts of the country missed when driving.

However it’s got a few issues and could benefit from better UX.

A significant issue is voice guidance. Sometimes a bit late when cycling. However biggest problem is distance cues. Often very inaccurate. Not uncommon to to hear multiple prompts in quick succession with vastly different distances - often telling to keep going for further than the whole tour!

The other significant issue is circular routes. Komoot planning is point to point, so planning a circular route requires all sorts of fiddly and annoying work around.

A big annoyance is map zoom. It’s very limited and often you cannot zoom in far enough especially when used on a phone. And as you zoom in, often labels, like road names and landmarks get even smaller.

It would be nice to have a compass so you know what way you are facing when having to make route choices. If it does have a compass, it doesn’t work very well. Often you get to say a multi way split and apart from seeing where you come from, it’s not always easy to work out which is the correct way forward.

And at present, cropping the route appears not to be working in web version. Would be nice to have an auto crop, whereby when making a route public, it automatically crops either end of the route that fall within a geo fence(s).

Great idea but could do with improvements and better UX.

Better Than Expected

Performs well, easy and intuitive to use and a well laid out platform.

Was about to buy a stand-alone MTB Nav but thought I’d give this a try first - glad I did, it performs as well in its own right and it’s less kit to carry.

It has very clear spoken instructions as well as screen prompts, auto zoom map and the ability to download maps for offline use (saving battery & data use)

It also seems to gift you the map of the region you live without charge. It’s only a nominal fee to buy the whole world maps for it, only a 5th of the price you’d pay for a decent hardware version.

One think I would say is that it didn’t pick up some routes / tracks that I know can be taken but that could be a limitation of the open source mapping or just that I haven’t explored the software enough yet to see where there are alternative selections.

The only downside I can see is the charge would not last as long on your phone as the stand alone unit (which have around 15 hrs) - I have a pedelec so can charge directly from its battery as I go along but without that, I reckon you’d still get 4 - 5 hours use out of it. Not too shabby!

Well worth it and I’m very impressed.

**Update - I’ve bought the full world maps - great app.

Love the functionality and use with Wahoo

I’ve used this app for about half a year now and am loving the different functions. In particular I like the ability to switch between different types of map whether that’s the standard Komoot map (which is one of the most detailed I’ve used), or the open cycle map showing all the cycle lanes around the world. This makes it so easy to plan a ride and stay away from busy roads and onto lanes that are best suited to bikes. I also love being able to see all local attractions on the map. Which means every ride is different and includes something interesting to see and experience. Finally having turn by turn on my Wahoo Element Bolt makes it much easier to use than just following the plotted lines. Also uploading rides and saving to them to the Wahoo is really easy once the two apps are connected. Whether it’s for road cycling, bike touring or mountain biking Komoot is probably the most detailed and easiest to use of any cycling app. I’d highly recommend Komoot to anyone wanting to keep rides interesting and refreshing.

Works great except for a couple minor issues

Ride With GPS charges a monthly fee for turn-by-turn directions. This app is free and only charges one-time fees for offline map downloads, so that’s a huge win in my book - a much more reasonable business model.

The turn-by-turn directions work great except for a couple minor issues:

- The automatic rerouting is really dumb and will get totally confused if your GPS signal isn’t great. Luckily it can be turned off, which I’d highly recommend doing.
- The voice prompts are fairly quiet and there doesn’t seem to be a way to increase the volume. I was unable to hear them when there was a lot of wind noise. They can also be hard to understand because they use an old Stephen Hawking style robot voice. I’m sure there’s a better speech synthesis library they could have used.

Other than that though, great app. If these issues get fixed I’ll definitely give it 5 stars.
