Bought the premium to support it. Few issues: 1) feedback apparently queues into the apple mail app, something I never use, ridiculous. I have 4000+ apps and have never seen anything his silly. Use the url scheme and open in the default app, don’t stick it in a black hole where it will never be delivered - or is that the point? 2) it doesn’t display multi-word answers. Other apps either change the cell colours per word or put the heavy bars in between words, so an answer (4,3) or (3,3,3) is much easier to visualise. 3) if I drag multiple .puz files from Files to acrosslite, it imports the first one!! I have a few thousand to add to the library, it would be nice if it came into the 21st century and allowed me to do more than one at a time. 4) nice if double tapping a cell selected the whole answer and toggled across/down if applicable. 5) switching out of the app and then back presents me with an empty grid. The only way to repopulate it is to go to the library and re-open it. That’s very annoying. It really, really, needs updating. 2024 update - years on and none of these have been addressed. No updates in 4 years which is worrying.

Best crossword app EVER
Loving crossword likeI do, It is hard to find an app (or a book!), that is uniquely challenging, without the frustrations I found with other apps. I love that I can save time by adding the first letter of a word I think is a possible answer, and can see right away if i’m on the right track, which = no stress! This the App that I use more than any other on my ipad. Love the I can import puzzles easily from other sources-it’s ‘the gift that keeps on giving!’ The brilliantly constructed puzzles help to keep my mind sharp, and serve to occupy my mind during stressful events.

I’ve tried them all. This is the one to get. I used to be a devoted Across Lite user on the PC. In the past few years I’ve switched over to doing puzzles on the iPad, and Across Lite just wasn’t fully there. I needed robust support for external keyboards and landscape orientation, so I tried every other app I could find. None felt right to me. They all felt clunky. (The NYT app feels good, but you can only do NYT puzzles.) With the latest release, Across Lite has nailed it. I’m fully onboard now. This is the one to get. Well worth the money if you are at all serious about puzzles.
UPDATE: In the past few months, a serious bug has cropped up that I suspect is some sort of compatibility issue with the latest iOS update. I have reached out to the developer for support multiple times, without any response. The bug makes any puzzle solving a frustrating experience. Due to this, I can no longer recommend this app. It is extremely disappointing. I loved this app.

Across Lite
This is the first crossword app I really enjoy and I’ve tried many. I’ve chosen the intermediate setting which makes the game just a bit of a challenge but still a satisfying way to pass the time.

Best puzzle out there
I’ve been doing these crosswords every morning with my coffee for years. Love the format, selections and ease of use. The tools all work well and I’ve rarely experienced any software issues. The developers obviously love their creation and work hard at keeping the updates current. I play mine on an iPad and, other than a few glitches over the years that were immediately resolved, it works great. When Apple came out with a full update of its system and the crosswords were no longer playable; these guys quickly issued a statement with a work around that we could use until they updated the code. We were then able to go back to enjoying our crosswords as we always have. I have gladly paid to keep it ad free and will continue to support them, hopefully, for many more years.

Using this for years
Occasionally things go wrong with this app. However it always gets fixed. This is the best way to do a crossword puzzle beside paper and pen (only joking). I highly recommend this app for a morning wake up with a cup of coffee. There are many many crosswords puzzles available for Across Lite. I have been using this for years and I highly recommend it

Best crossword app so far, once you get the hang of loading them

There are options in the settings that allow you to tailor the mechanics to suit your preference. Layout is fairly easy on the eyes. If I were going to change something… I believe that in previous versions on devices other than my iPad I was able to switch between horizontal and vertical word focus by double tapping the pivotal square; in this version there’s a button at the bottom forcing you to shift your focus just as you were about to type in a word. Also, I find it unwieldy to have to leave the app, go into downloads and share a downloaded puzzle with the app to get it to open. I’m predominantly an android/pc user so I find the iPad versions of most apps quirky; users that go steady with Apple devices won’t know the difference. Overall, it’s a solid app with a good layout that allows me to enjoy my Brendan Emmett Quigley crosswords on my iPad.
