Best crossword app EVER
Loving crossword likeI do, It is hard to find an app (or a book!), that is uniquely challenging, without the frustrations I found with other apps. I love that I can save time by adding the first letter of a word I think is a possible answer, and can see right away if i’m on the right track, which = no stress! This the App that I use more than any other on my ipad. Love the I can import puzzles easily from other sources-it’s ‘the gift that keeps on giving!’ The brilliantly constructed puzzles help to keep my mind sharp, and serve to occupy my mind during stressful events.

Latest version seals the deal (UPDATE: Can no longer recommend)
I’ve tried them all. This is the one to get. I used to be a devoted Across Lite user on the PC. In the past few years I’ve switched over to doing puzzles on the iPad, and Across Lite just wasn’t fully there. I needed robust support for external keyboards and landscape orientation, so I tried every other app I could find. None felt right to me. They all felt clunky. (The NYT app feels good, but you can only do NYT puzzles.) With the latest release, Across Lite has nailed it. I’m fully onboard now. This is the one to get. Well worth the money if you are at all serious about puzzles.
UPDATE: In the past few months, a serious bug has cropped up that I suspect is some sort of compatibility issue with the latest iOS update. I have reached out to the developer for support multiple times, without any response. The bug makes any puzzle solving a frustrating experience. Due to this, I can no longer recommend this app. It is extremely disappointing. I loved this app.Show lessMts0987654
Using this for years
Occasionally things go wrong with this app. However it always gets fixed. This is the best way to do a crossword puzzle beside paper and pen (only joking). I highly recommend this app for a morning wake up with a cup of coffee. There are many many crosswords puzzles available for Across Lite. pretty good crossword app
There are options in the settings that allow you to tailor the mechanics to suit your preference. Layout is fairly easy on the eyes. If I were going to change something… I believe that in previous versions on devices other than my iPad I was able to switch between horizontal and vertical word focus by double tapping the pivotal square; in this version there’s a button at the bottom forcing you to shift your focus just as you were about to type in a word. Also, I find it unwieldy to have to leave the app, go into downloads and share a downloaded puzzle with the app to get it to open. I’m predominantly an android/pc user so I find the iPad versions of most apps quirky; users that go steady with Apple devices won’t know the difference. Overall, it’s a solid app with a good layout that allows me to enjoy my Brendan Emmett Quigley crosswords on my iPad.Show lesstalynir
Conflicted
I love hard crosswords. This is the only app I could find with a pretty good selection. However, it often has problems. For example I could not download puzzles for about two weeks because one of their servers was down. Only found this out by googling the name of the server. Wish this app would work better and have more selection however of course I’m sure they have all the puzzles they are permitted to have. So I use this app all time and love it but hate that it often fails.Show lessluandy29
iOS 14.4 seems to have broken it
Love this app but I installed iOS 14.4 yesterday (Sunday) and tried a wsj Monday puzzle, your app keeps crashing. Just an FYI. I really missed this app while I couldn’t get it to work. Out of desperation I deleted it and reinstalled and viola! It’s working again.
Update july 20, 2022: seems there is another glitch. When trying to load puzzles from fleeting image site, the download stalls. At least the app doesn’t crash.Show lesssubtropical_ken
Almost Perfect…
A solid five in its category Great from a content and variety perspective The new user experience can be distracting at first but very intuitive after the first few minutes It still doesn't quite measure up to the newspaper experience of doing a hard crossword in ink and having to wait a day for the answers... Cannot open App - Apple Issue
For those of you having this issue, it is not the developers fault. Apple has a habit of updating OS to the point where older platforms won't be able to work the same way when an app is modified. I have an older IPad & this is the second app I've had issues with. It's Apple's way to move you to purchase new h/w. Would not open. Removed and tried to download again, still will not open. I see that you are recommending going back to the previous version, but can't do that. Help please.Show lessCherry Blosson
Very Enjoyable!
I’d been using a competing puzzle site which has books of crosswords for sale but nothing new had been added for several years. I had Across Lite on my iPad and recently tried it again, after paying a minor fee for an upgrade. It took me a while to get used to it, but I really like the fact that you can totally customize the site to fit how you like to play. I also like that you can download various new crosswords at any time. It’s made me a crossword fan again!Show lessBavinbrielle
Best for NYT and others
Across Lite does a good job of moving the focus to a grid entry you might want to fill next after you enter something. It's as good as it gets, far better than the app the NYT licensed. Open your puzzle from its source, not from the app, for an easier experience. Once in the app, you can have hundreds of saved puzzles and it works perfectly.Show lessbredivad
