EDIT Upgrade looks good, doesn't fix anything
EDIT I have upped this to four stars as some bugs and misfeatures have been ironed out. This is really a very very good app. Internal browser doesn’t work, really, but that’s minor.
The 4.x upgrade is very pretty. Unfortunately, it adds new annoyances and fails to fix old ones.
The biggest problem with this app, since the last upgrade (years ago) is the sensitivity of the letters up and down the sides of the screen. It's practically impossible to select letters reliably without hitting clue text so the cursor jump. This is NOT fixed, though I had hoped it would be.
The cursor behavior has changed radically in 4.x, and not for the better. I can't overwrite letters anymore -- the cursor just sticks on an existing letter. I cannot imagine why anyone would desire this behavior. Hitting the advance button used to take you to the next BLANK space (which is useful if you want to solve the puzzle), but now just jumps to the next word, even if it's already filled in.
Overall, a good app. But like too many apps nowadays, the "upgrades" tend to move backwards in usability.Show lessJDB23xyz
A great family activity.
When our daughter was still living at home we all worked on the crossword together. When she left for college and after, we can all do the crossword on our iPads and then help each other with answers one of us missed. Across lite makes access to the puzzle easy for all of us.
I wrote this several years ago. Since I’ve updated my iPad to OS 13, Across Lite no longer works. Please update Across Lite so we can GP back for doing The NY Times together even when we’re living in different parts of the countryShow lessNeeds-a-list
Great Substitute For Paper
I used to use this app with a PC to print out NY Times puzzles on paper and check solutions. Now I do the same on my iPad more conveniently, and saving trees in the process. I love the fanfare it plays when I complete a puzzle correctly! I use the app at its simplest (no timing, etc.) but these options are available if you're so inclined - and more in the paid version. You can also configure the layout, sounds, font, etc. This is a worthwhile app if you like crossword puzzles.Show lessMSLicht
The only useable CW app
The reviews of others convinced me to try this app. I was very impressed and cannot think of anything that I would call negative. It's been a couple of years since the WSJ crosswords stopped working on Apple computers so it was a great pleasure to find this app. And I was able to find WSJ puzzles among many others. You will notice when you use this app that much has been thought of to make it easy and intuitive to navigate.

Finally an update
I like the update but wish it had come sooner. It is great to pick how you want the puzzle displayed and that opens automatically. I am still getting used to the swipe not double tap to change between across and down. I have only used the rebus once and that worked well also. This seems to be the only app for crosswords so it is not like we have any other choice. Having said that, it is a good app and makes doing puzzles a pleasure.Show lessBeach potato

I used to be a devoted Across Lite user on the PC. In the past few years I’ve switched over to doing puzzles on the iPad, and Across Lite just wasn’t fully there. I needed robust support for external keyboards and landscape orientation, so I tried every other app I could find. None felt right to me. They all felt clunky. (The NYT app feels good, but you can only do NYT puzzles.) With the latest release, Across Lite has nailed it. I’m fully onboard now. This is the one to get. What happened?
I loved this app prior to the latest update and now have a couple of real frustrations. When I close out of the app temporarily, I lose my settings for the puzzle I’m currently working. For instance, if I am in pencil mode and close out, when I next open the app, I’m in pen mode and must change back. If I am in Page mode and close out temporarily, when I next open the app I am in List mode and must change back. Could the app save the settings for the puzzle I am working on, like it used to? Some puzzles too easy but lot of fun
I like doing things on the computer rather than pencil and paper which makes this app perfect. It always lets you see exactly where you are in the puzzle and depending on which direction you’re working in the across and down lighting is different which is an indicator of your position. Also, erasing things is simple and it all makes this a lot of fun. Good job!Show lessSinginintherain1950
This is the best crossword app ever!
Update...what did you do? I used to be able to download and play free crosswords from NYT archives. Now, when I select them, I get directed to a page that's full of ads and NYT's says their puzzles are available only if I have a paid subscription with them. Have not been able to play ANY crossword puzzles since the last update. Boo!

The other apps I downloaded provided only a few free puzzles then offered a "purchase deal" to buy additional puzzles. This app provides a source for hundreds of free puzzles by going to the internet and loading into the app giving you the advantage of the app features. Love it!Show lessPaintby#
Good Start to My Day
I enjoy the crosswords most of the time although some are out of my wheelhouse!
One new problem has occurred in the last two months. I can no longer input multiple letters in the same square. When I type the second letter the whole puzzle goes blank. I use an iPad and have not previously had any problem.
My husband has a new iPad purchased a couple months ago and is having the same problem. Thanks for the brain exercise to start my day. Love the clever twist clues.Show lessTermie
