Best of the Crossword Apps, but needs an upgrade for iOS 10
As somebody who does the NY Times puzzle religiously every day I have found that this is by far the best app in terms of ease of input and use. Unfortunately there are some bugs under iOS 10. Trying to enter any rebus characters makes the program crash and wipes out any progress you've made on the puzzle up to that point (incredibly frustrating), so forget doing ANY Thursday NY Times puzzle with this current version. Also, the icon and graphics are incredibly dated and amateurish making the app ugly to look at. If they can fix these problems it's a five star app all the way.Show lessSolver555
It opens .puz files
It will open and allow one to play .puz files with ease. My first gripe is that I prefer the view with the keyboard on the screen and every time I leave the app to look something up or answer an email, when I return, it's in the other view, or it bounces between the two views a couple of times before settling. Sometimes it never settles and I have to quit and return. It also doesn't work with the screen orientated such that the button is on top. Don't ever expect to change play, or sound, or any other settings without multiple crashes. If anyone else could make a better crossword puzzle app that allowed you to play .puz files, I'd be on boardShow lesstwade1
Good, but could use a few tweaks
I started using this app when CRUX wouldn't work on my new iPad. I'm generally pleased, but wish the downloading process for NY Times puzzles was a bit easier. Too many steps are required. I much preferred the CRUX interface, where you could download a whole month of puzzles in one click. I also don't love the way the letters are laid out in the default view. The left side letters often take three or four presses to register.
All in all, not a bad app, but it would be much better for me with these changes.Show lessStumal
Finally, a great iPad app for crosswords
I've tried several different apps for crosswords on my iPad, but they all had a drawback that made them difficult. This one is great. It is easy to add new puzzles, great options for choosing degree of difficulty, and I love the little jingle when you complete a puzzle. The only negative is you have use portrait layout to use keyboard input, at least you do in the free version.sShow lessMroleary
Learning how to do crosswords at last
Always wanted to learn crosswords, but pencil and paper was frustrating because I could never figure out where I went wrong and seldom could I complete a puzzle. Across Lite has a play mode to tell me when a letter is wrong. Makes all the difference. I download a NY Times Monday puzzle from the online archives everyday now and it is great fun. While a Sunday Times puzzle may be a long way off for me still, I have high hopes of working my way to Tuesday someday! Really enjoying Across Lite.Show lessoceangirl2012
Nice app for beginners
I've always liked doing crosswords, but I've never been particularly good at it. This app is really nice for someone like me. It helps you improve your skill by giving you hints and such. You do have to pay for certain packages of crosswords, but it does come with several loaded already. I don't mind the extra expense. My skill level is already improving. I find the app very easy to use. I have had no issues with it unexpectedly shutting down. I haven't explored the app in full as of yet, but I am very happy with what I have used so far.Show lessFattyFaye
Technical problems
I used to love this app, but it seems to have a lot problems with it. My bluetooth keyboard will not work no matter how many times I toggle back and forth between the two views. Also the keyboard with the app doesn't always work. It got so frustrating that I deleted the app for a while. I decided to try it again hoping that some of the problems had been fixed, but apparently not. I'm so desperate for puzzles to solve that I will put up with the annoyances until I can't stand it any longer and delete it again.Show lessGhubler
Needs bug fixes
I've loved using this app for the last year or two on my iPad and it's worked great until recently. After the iOS 9 update it hasn't been working properly, the keys don't respond well and I'm assuming it's because it's not yet compatible with the new software. Hopefully it gets fixed, otherwise I'd give this app 5 stars. It's easy to find great crosswords of all difficulties though I wish the New York Times would update their selection of free ones from time to time. Love this app!
The app is well done and accomodates all levels. Like the music when you finish a puzzle as well!
UPdate with IOS 9. Suddenly big problems. My keyboard doesn't work with the app anymore and certain letters, "a", "e" are slow to respond on the virtual keyboard. A real shame because I really liked this app and did at least one puzzle once a day, but now having to really punch the letters to get it to fill in, it is not fun. Across lite
I love my NY Times puzzles and love this app. It gives me the ability to do the puzzle no matter where I am. However, it's not always easy to access it. Since I'm a subscriber, I should be able to go directly to the app and work on the current puzzle. Now I have to go to Safari, enter the NYTimes and if I'm lucky I can get the crossword to download to the app. Most times I have to try multiple times and then when that doesn't work I have to access the NYTimes app and get to the crossword that way.Show lessRojac1234
