  • Phenomenal

This app, unlike many, many other ones, met my expectations. It was original and unique, required fast-paced strategy skills, and had no bugs as far as I could see. Nihilumbra is an exhilarating game with beautiful graphics and a lovely soundtrack.

All five worlds and colors were diverse and special in their own way.

At first, my initial thought was this game would be exceptionally confusing due to the concept of it, but nothing puzzled me thanks to the text placed throughout the scenes and episodes.

The atmosphere is incredible, giving off a dark vibe as well.

I feel like gamers will connect with the main character's guilt and determination to escape the void. It's one of those pieces that linger in your mind long after you put it down and finish with it. To me, it was like a silent movie taken to a whole new level, one that you could interact with.

With that said, I recommend this to anyone who loves a good adventure or puzzle game, as it'll keep you occupied and addicted for quite a while.

It deserves the five star rating it has.

  • Beautiful, creative, but points off for typos and bad writing

This is a game designed to appeal to fans of Lost Winds, Aquaria, Glowfish and other gorgeous platform+-type games. You're a depressed blob of goo that soon adopts the form of an emo wraith, trying to escape The Void and gain more life and color. I love that the reward for each level is another color (each with its own powers), so the visuals get more lush as you progress. The game is beautiful.

But geez, guys, if you're going to include a lot of moody writing in your game, then please do invest in the skills of someone for whom English is a first language. There are howling errors in grammar and word use ("where" instead of "were," etc.) that really detract from the philosophical atmosphere you're trying to convey. How much can it cost? If it's worth doing at all, it's worth doing right.

  • Perfect

It's been said before by another reviewer, but this app is sure to be Apple's game of the year. Unlike most iOS side scrolling games, this one features refined, unobtrusive controls that don't contribute to the challenge of the game, and users have the option to use accelerometer controls as well. The graphics—although 2 dimensional—are the highest quality you'll find in an iOS game and contribute profoundly to the dark, intriguing atmosphere. The character animation is endearing, and the color changing mechanic in on par with Valve's Portal. If you think any of this is hyperbole, buy the app and see for yourself.
