  • Difficult to unsubscribe

If unsubscribing was easier, I would rate this higher. However, currently it is clear what the driver is for management - revenue not customer experience. Newsflash, if you treat your customers with respect money will come. I do not understand why I can’t simply unsubscribe and re-subscribe by the click of a button. Why I have to email each time and go through 6 different links and log ins to submit a request to unsubscribe should be borderline illegal. Get your priorities right and while you’re at it, fix the UX - it’s clunky.

    Developer Response

Hi skspies. Thank you for sharing your experience. We apologise for the inconvenience and are working hard to improve our product.
  • Near impossible to cancel subscription

Via website - you log into a fairfax account that then expects users to login to a Metro Publishing site that leads to page defaulting AFR subscribers to an SMH page. Click on instructions to unsubscribe and leads to a dead link. Request for help link sends you to a form page to fill in details of requests but submitted form multiple times and page just gets reset each time to a blank form and no email acknowledgment.

Via phone - 30 minutes waiting each day over 5 days, no one picks up. Hopeless.

Sent email via address provided - Metro Publishing Subscriber Services responded by issuing a ticket number, no action for already a week.

  • Just functional

Disappointed with this app. AFR is not an inexpensive subscription, and the app experience is far worse than going through the website - hard to reconcile the two. Poor search functionality (easier to search through google!), inability to detect and pop an article from website to the app. No noticeable improvements over the many years I’ve used this app either, but I continue to live in hope…

  • Unable to zoom.

Unable to zoom up photos or text. This makes seeing or reading some of your pictures and text difficult particularly when there is a lot of detail. On smaller form platforms this makes you app nearly useless.
Was this a conscious decision for copyright? Either way in trying to protect or stop the ability for this functionality ruins what should be a good platform.

  • Subscriptions don’t work

The app will charge you for a subscription but then give you a “data couldn’t be read because it isn’t in the correct format” error. When buying a subscription online the restore password feature never sends a reset email
  • Some work to be done

If you read an article on any device signed into your account it should be greyed out on ALL your devices so you know what you’ve read over the day as you switch devices. Also there are some great new features which have been introduced on the website like “newsfeed” which haven’t been moved to the app yet. Agree with most, the functionality of the app is lacking despite the content being great.

  • Pasting clipboard data

Is there a reason that the AFR app is ‘pasting’ my clipboard data on app open?
  • Basic search doesn’t work

Search for ‘Westpac’ on the afr.com website and you get hundreds of results. Do the same search in this app and get One result...
  • Content great, app bad

UI is ok at best, very basic.

The share link function frequently doesn’t works properly and it appears to be constant human error - I attempted to use the feedback function to let them know that they’re not copying the URL into the share link function most of the time but unfortunately the feedback section was clunky and broken.

Maybe someone will see this and fix?

  • Reading the articles

I have been so totally spoilt by the SMH and The Age apps for iPad , so not having the ability to tap on an article and read it in text mode is a major access flaw in this app, having to enlarge by dragging is not a good enough experience, especially for a premium priced app.

Next, whilst the app is fine, again unlike the SMH or Age app, there is no access available to the web version... it’s says not a subscriber and in contacting AFR support, they say they can’t see the subscription because it comes out of Apple... this is totally weird and very unsatisfactory customer experience

Can do a lot better, people
