Essentially a Racist Reddit
I’ve been using this app for around 10 years and it was my go to place for memes, humour and all about silliness, however over the last year it’s just become less about funny and more about spreading fake news, pure hatred and abysmal discrimination. It’s a really sad thing to have seen it go so downhill. I deleted it a while ago and recently reinstalled it to see if it had gotten better, but if anything it seems to have gotten worse. The really grim thing is that it was a place for many variations of people to use and laugh together and it was such a wonderful community (bar the odd idiots but that’s always the way, now I fear it’s only them left), and I feel for the people that have to see the vile things being spread on there about their race, religion, etc in particular. It needs a big clean up, or at this point to just to be cast into the fires of Mordor. Sad times.

“You will never find a more wretched hive of….”
I’ve been on 9gag for over 10 years and it used to be one of the most funniest and entertaining places on the internet, but every year it become a little bit more right wing.
It’s now just extreme, so around 6 months ago I stopped using it as it was horrible - real core hatred - and there was illegal stuff on there too, eg encouraging violence against certain minorities.
Today, on a whim I decided to see what the app was like and it just looks like it’s become worse. Hardly any funny stuff, and nearly every other post was racist or anti-immigrant or anti-muslim. And I don’t just mean regular mainstream opinions, I mean vengeful hatred, full of violent themes and allusions to race wars. And plenty of fake videos.
At this stage I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the extremist posts are from foreign powers trying to split western societies along racial lines. This has all the hallmarks of such an operation.
To be fair, the app could still be useful for one thing - it could provide the police with a list of potentially violent right-wing extremists. There are some really angry people there!

What had 9gag has become?
I have an 11+ year account on 9gag, but I discovered the website even earlier than that. When I discovered 9gag, I was in middle school and 9gag was one of the websites that I could both practice my English and have fun seeing memes. I think it was one of the main sources that I could learn the humour of other cultures. It is to this day, is the only social media that I actively and consistently used for so long. I am a grown up now who and I am studying for my PhD degree in the US. Whenever I felt stressed, bored or just before going to bed I always looked at 9gag to have a bit of a smile. However, especially after covid, 9gag became a hate crime propaganda machine. Recently, I realised that any time I open 9gag, I am seeing things that puts my mood down. I miss the days when point of having 9gag was to escape from real world and see funny memes and gifs, come up with silly meme terminology. As of now, I am deleting 9gag for good and I sincerely hope that one day, it can turn back to its original root.
