  • Reasonable

    Great mag 10 years ago
Too many photos of people “out on the hill”
Not enough narrative and more gear reviews(this isn’t by mr Thompson by the way)
  • Doesn’t open in iOS

Latest update (w/c 10 Dec) refuses to open in iOS.
    Unusable.
  • Best for routes

I,be been subscribing for a year now and have loved every issue. With 12 routes included every month I now have my own personal library of routes that grows every issue.
  • Works well as an app

Trail magazine on an iPad works well....almost. Photographs especially are mostly excellent. Magazine content is relatively easy to find and as an add-on to the paper subscription package it works well for us as a family; daughter gets the mag and I get the iPad version which I can read on the move.
Magazine content is well balanced now; good range of articles, equipment reviews and motivational ideas.
Only complaint is that moving around the magazine is extremely clunky and long-winded compared to other publications... no capability to press page numbers and go straight to articles (on my iPad anyway....with other publications I can).

  • Massive disappointment. Crashes, wrong colours and downloads fail

This is the worst newsstand app I've ever used. I had such hopes for recent release with 'bug fixes' but still, problems include:

    The App frequently crashes

Magazines almost never complete download, so it takes multiple attempts to successfully get a magazine issue.

Frequently the colours are all wrong - pages look green or purple. Shame when so much of the magazine is full of wonderful landscape pictures.

Having bought a digital subscription direct from the magazine online, it has turned out to be a massive disappointment.

  • Great magazine - dull app

I'm a subscriber to the paper magazine which is my favourite outdoor mag. The content is great - interesting articles, really good reviews etc - well worth the money.

The app is rubbish though. It's basically the worlds simplest PDF viewer with no features to make use of technology - no links, no bookmarking, no navigation, no notes or annotation - just a bunch of pages you can only view linearly. Almost completely pointless.

5* for the mag, 1* for the app.

  • Vectored pages would improve enjoyment!

This is an excellent magazine which is informative and humorous. I also read the paper copy but find the print very small so the digital version is great for enlarging the text and images. However, my enjoyment would be greatly enhanced if the digital pages were vectorised rather than being simple scans, as the text deteriorates and becomes illegible when zoomed. Due to poor eyesight, I rely heavily on being able to enlarge the text and for it to remain legible. Otherwise, it's all good!

  • Avoid, It could've been so good.

Its such a shame that this is so poor. Trail need to take a look at TGO digital editions they are excellent magazines for your iPad. Trail digital has given nothing but problems I have not been able to download issues correctly and also as Julio217 states they are never available when the print version is. I have had Nov for 2 weeks now and the digital edition is still not available !! Trail look at TGO this is how its done.

  • Stick with the printed version

Copies are never available to download when the actual issue is available in store. Still waiting to download the November issue, over a week since it was available to buy in store.

To add further insult for price paid for this service, the app actually loads a thumbnail of the issue you're waiting to download momentarily while it checks for new issues, before it disappears again.

Very disappointed for what you pay for this service. A waste of money quite frankly. Better off just buying the issue in store or getting the print subscription.

    A shame.

  • Good Start

I've been reading Trail Magazine in the print version for about 9 months now, initially buying because an article caught my eye. I've since bought every issue though, so I think it's an excellent magazine, I've tried every other walking magazine and for me Trail is the best. I was disappointed not to be able to buy it on Newstand, so it's good to see it is now available. I do realise it's early days but I have one big problem with the app as it stands, that is the level of zoom available. As someone of advancing years with poor eyesight, I have a bit of trouble reading it, even fully zoomed in! As a comparison, take a look at What Mountain Bike, which I have read for years, and subscribed to the Newstand version for a year now. This allows you to easily read text and really zoom in on pictures and maps. Another idea for the future, links from your advertisers to their websites, e-mail links to your letters page, etc. But like I said it's early days, and it's good so far.
