Practically unusable

I’d love this app to work, but it rarely works. It always crashes, tells me there are no services available (when there are plenty) and won’t let me book tickets as a result (if it doesn’t crash while I’m trying to book tickets). For someone who lives in a rural area this means I have to get on services without a ticket and negotiate with conductors, and hope there are seats on the service. Or ring, and they send me back to the website (which also has issues). We have pretty good public transport, but this app needs to work reliably so we can organise our travel without this sort of hassle.

Function not working for over 9 months!!

Receive random misc error messages stating no internet yet this is categorically incorrect. Next 5 train function doesn’t work displaying ‘unavailable’ and based on other reviews hasn’t worked for over 9 months!! I use iPhone 12 with iOS 17.6.1
Various other errors in data e.g. nominated service will run with 6 carriages then it actually runs with 3 or large lag time in sending alert (often after train has completed journey).
Lack of action in resolving these issues adds to existing frustration commuters already experience with Vline.

Put it on, took it off, within 10 minutes

This is a total hot mess. Once again the state of Victoria shows everyone how not to do IT apps. Wont show timetables. Says it’s not connected to internet. Yea yea funny cos I am. 2024 and they still cannot get a decent app working and reading from other reviews it seems an ongoing problem with excuse after excuse from the developer. Yea well I have the solution, you are employing developers that don’t know what they are doing, and taking money from taxpayers. Replace the company. Because this is going no where fast. Oh and to waste more time. I have an iphone15 so it seems you can’t get it to work on any iPhone and those excuses are wearing out fast.

Fix the app

Update - since my review in March the app is still not working on my iPhone 14. I’ve updated the app when updates have been available, I’m running the latest iOS. My workaround is to still use Google maps but it’s clunky and frustrating accessing it. At least the train location and times are accurate as they’re updated realtime with TrackR. I used to use this app regularly to see what time my husband’s train was arriving home. And also for planning my trips to Melbourne. Since the iOS 17 update it’s useless and unable to tell me any or the arriving or departing trains. I’ve had to stop recommending it to friends. At least V/Line now provide their train and trip data to Google Maps so I can see where the trains are and what platforms they’re arriving/departing from. It’s frustrating that the app still works on my old iPhone 6s (because it’s unable to have its iOS further updated).

Response from developer

Dear Sheeelia, thank you for your feedback regarding the app. To assist us in investigating further, please tell us what device model you are using, e.g. iPhone 12, iPhone 13 Pro Max. Yours sincerely, V/Line.

Doesn’t work

Used to be fine, but now every service I have saved just says “no services could be retrieved, check internet connect (no problems there everything else works) and try to reload”. I’ve updated, Ive deleted and redownloaded. Nothing.
Update - probably a year after my initial review - nothings changed, still doesn’t work. It’s not “devise specific” (looking through reviews shows this) it just outright doesn’t work.

Dear nicknackpaddywack9876, thank you for your feedback regarding the app. We are looking into this problem as a number of iOS17 users have been impacted, but the problem appears to be device specific. To assist us in investigating further, please tell us what device model you are using, e.g. iPhone 12, iPhone 13 Pro Max. Yours sincerely, V/Line.

Next 5 feature broken

Next 5 feature hasn’t worked on my personal phone for years. Works fine on my work phone. Both iPhones running latest version of the app.

“No services from X to Y could be retrieved. Please check your internet connection and then tap to try reloading this service.”

Southern cross station is a hell hole at the best of times and the ‘next 5’ is the only way to get platform numbers without physically being in front of the screens at the station.

Next 5 train schedule

It has been months now, still my next 5 train schedule does not work. Tried reinstalling the app and every possible thing. I'm using iPhone 13 pro, ios version 17.3.1. It is a shame you guys are not able to fix this issue which is affecting so many people to plan their journeys. I've read the rest of the reviews where many people have complained about this, all your team replies is we are looking into it or it is a device issue. How hard it is for such important train network running platform to resolve such significant issue. I hope your team takes this matter seriously and fix this soon.

Issue the Next 5

When trying to use the next 5 option I always get the message “Please check your internet connection then tap to try reloading this service “
This was happening on my old iPhone 12 and I have just upgraded to an iPhone 15 and I am still getting the same error.

I have tried on various Wi-Fi networks as well as the 5G network. All with the same issue.

Frustrating and non-working.

As a frequent commuter, I had high hopes for the V/Line app to simplify my travel experience. Unfortunately, the app has been nothing short of a disappointment. The user interface is clunky and does not even work and does not even show real-time updates as shown in the what’s new, without the lack of a reliable notification system for train delays or cancellations is another major downside, leaving travellers stranded

In summary, the V/Line app is in dire need of a complete overhaul. Its current state is not only fit for purpose but also adds to the challenges of commuting. I hope to see significant improvements in the future for a more reliable and user-friendly experience and the single 5 stars rating I can only gather that was by the app development as when it was still in the sandbox box as it seems to have a lot of issues

Completely useless

Did anyone who uses VLine even test this? I can’t enter really basic train trips like Geelong to a major Metro train station! It doesn’t seem to be connected to any of the Melbourne timetables. This makes it completely useless.

VLine travellers connect into the Melbourne transport network. That’s how we travel. That’s how we’ve travelled for 40 years or more, at least since the City Loop was built.

This app is treating us like we’re flying into a single airport from interstate or overseas, instead of, you know, travelling on connected public transport networks. It’s completely bizarre. And utterly useless.
