Disappointed

I’ve been a Proton Mail user for many years, and I love the product. Recently I upgraded my package to one that includes Pass. It’s confusing and doesn’t appear to work at all within iPad Safari. It kinda works within MacOS Safari on a few websites but not others. I haven’t been able to get the Hide My Email feature to work at all, but why is that within a password manager anyway? Apple’s free Password app handles passwords quite well, and what it doesn’t do, such as credit card details, work very well in 1Password. Proton Pass would do well to emulate 1Password. I uninstalled Proton Pass and will continue to rely on the more than adequate tools that were available before its installation.

Solid password manager. Room for improvement

I took the opportunity to buy lifetime access with the Black Friday deal. It’s a steal! I’ve been a 1Password and Fastmail user for years and I’m happy with the products. What I’m not happy with is the pricing.

Migrating across from 1Password to Pass was straightforward. Export and import. I had a few files and loyalty cards in 1Password that Pass does not support. So a few manual efforts but nothing much. A few passkeys as well (but this is expected given how they work).

One of the not so simple things to figure out in Pass was email aliasing. After some searching and reading help articles I come to learn I need to go straight to SimpleLogin to manage aliases and mailboxes. Not so simple. I’m looking forward to better integration in the future.

Another feature missing in Pass is “large reveal password” that shows the password and its associated index number. I really need this feature since sadly a few services I use still use this bad practice.

Overall, it’s good an no blockers on my moving across. Will update my review when I find, think of new features, or when fixes to the above might get done.

Thank you.

Wow, very pleased, eager for future features.

Pros :
- Integrated Alias email feature is amazing, i will never use a manager without this feature going forward.
- Competitive pricing, if not simply the best and most valuable package offered by any password manager as of 2024.
- Truly secure, Truly encrypted, Truly open-source/audited code
- Attractive, intuitive apps
- Medium to Easy learning curve, especially compared to Roboform ( my previous favorite) It is incredibly secure whilst remaining surprisingly convenient and intuitive.
- Supported on a wide range of platforms, Os’s, browsers and devices.

Con :
- The apps are not perfect at detecting autofill forms, 1 out of 10 times i will have to exit my app to go into the proton pass app to manually copy/paste my credentials.*
* I have no doubt this will improve with time, proton pass is hardly 3 years old and it is already way ahead of so many other options.

For context:
My wife and I started using ProtonPass Plus together 2 months ago. I switched over from Roboform which i had been using for 3 years. My wife switched over from a blended chaos of Google password manager, Apples icloud keychain, and her notes app. She was constantly having to reset passwords and her emails were compromised by breaches.

She is not very tech savvy yet she has found the transition to be wonderful. It can take a little work and patience at times but with my help she now has greater peace of mind concerning her online security, and also less spam thanks to the alias feature. All her logins have using, strong passwords and she never has to remember them, the app stores them all safely, even 2FA and passkeys.

I have loved the transition from Roboform to Proton Pass, my favorite 2 features are the alias creation and storage as well as speed of the app. I previously had only 1 alias email for all my accounts but when it got breached i had to painstakingly change the email adress for over a hundred accounts. Now, the app easily and intuitively creates a new fake email for every account i create, and forwards the mail to my main account securely. If ever that account is breached, the intruder has no access to my other services and accounts. Amazing.

I am eager for the developers to continue refining the app. There are small quality of life items that need to be addressed to help me lose less time on a daily basis. Thank you.

Response from developer

Thank you for your review and for sharing your experience with Proton Pass. We're very happy to hear that you've found it useful in your everyday life. That said, we're working on improving the autofill for all web services reported by our community. Therefore, please feel free to flag any problematic websites or apps to us through the 'Feedback' option, and we'll note your feedback for future improvements.

was great, now broken

edit: I just had a developer response to the email asking me to check my password and get in touch if theres still a problem. Insulting... particularly given thats the first thing any normal person would do... more so given they dont respond to support requests.

yay... first you keep forcing me to log back into my email for no reason, now proton pass freezes each time i load a password. if I want to load another then I have to restart it.

How do I know you're not going to lock me out of proton pass if I update?

and how do you expect a password reset to work when you lock someone out of their email... the same email you send the pw to?

luckily I have another device that you haven't forced me to log back into. note Im using peotonpass and strangely the passwords don't seem to work any more for proton mail.

how long before I lose everything?

these guys were great, now I'm regretting ever getting a subscription and given previous updates Im worried about updating 🙄

That doesn't sound right at all. Could you share your support ticket number with us here? We'd be more than happy to check on your inquiry so we can clear up any misunderstandings and see how we may be able to assist you further with the issue.

ProtonPass

Long time user of Protonmail great product so when I saw ProtonPass I jumped on it. I am using a iOS device. Having transferred all my passwords from another password keeping app, I could not add to existing accounts or change passwords on existing accounts or even create a new account with out getting a “access token does not have suffice to scope” error message. Support as always responded to my issues, but I’m told that they are aware of the issue but will need to be fixed in an update. So here I wait. Please add Duck Duck Go Browser addon support.

Asks for rating too much

I love this app. I would have given it five stars had I not been asked to rate it three times in ten minutes. I don’t understand how that approach would lead to a higher average rating, but that’s not my problem.

Response from developer

We're sorry to hear that. We have taken note of your feedback and forwarded it to the team for further investigation. If you have any other suggestions on what we could do to further improve our service, feel free to let us know at https://proton.me/support/contact.

421 HTTP error code

The IOS app is the worst product I have seen from proton, always get 421 error code when I need it the most. Regret my decision paying for a yearly subscription

Response from developer

Sorry to hear that. Could you share more details about the issue? What are the exact steps you're taking that lead to this error? Do you have any antivirus or firewall installed on your device? Are you using a VPN by any chance when encountering the issue? Contact us using the 'Feedback' option so we can investigate further.

No longer compatible

Would be 5 stars but backwards compatibility was finally abandoned :(. I have been using all of the Proton apps and services for a while now (and absolutely loving them) but unfortunately as of one of the recent updates to Pass iOS 16 is required to install updates that without them prevent you from being able to log in; I only have an iPhone 7 and cannot update past iOS 15. Would you consider adding backwards compatibility somehow or will I just have to not use this app anymore? Thanks!

Response from developer

Due to the difficulty of maintaining compatibility with iOS 15 and lower, the recent versions of Proton Pass are only supported on iOS 16 and above. We're sorry for the inconvenience.

Be cautious

Simplelogin is a back door it will silently invalidate or delete your aliases without your confirmation if you unlink proton account or delete your simplelogin account

Response from developer

We're sorry to see that you're dissatisfied. Note that Proton Pass aliases are in fact SimpleLogin aliases, therefore deleting your SimpleLogin account would delete the Proton Pass aliases as well.

A revolution in pwd management

Since I started using Proton I felt more indépendant and my communication and data secure and with ProtonPass it added the strong pwd management and the aliases ! A real difference!
All very handy and easy to use

I would suggest to add some more coupable fields in the identification entries (like a 2nd pwd or other information required in some above average robust websites)
