It took me awhile to manage to scan my passport (USA), but I got it done and I want to help other people. For USA passports, the chip is located in the back cover. I took off my phone case and held my phone at around 30 degrees to the inside of the back cover. I held the top of my phone which is an iPhone 11 on the middle right of the cover. The loading screen will have different text when it starts to scan, no vibration, and hold it there until you get a checkmark. Good luck!
I finally was able to register my US Passport in this app after spending an hour on scanning passport 🧐
1. Take off your phone case.
2. Scan on the very back page with the barcode at about 30 degree angle.
3. Move your iPhone just above the barcode very slowly if 2. did not work or change angles slowly.

Close and hold the front of the passport, then lean your phone on the top part of nation emblem, slightly move up and down till your screen show ‘SOD…’ then stop move and hold still, few seconds it will showing succeed.

First step registration was amazing! Took a photo in less than a second. Never able to get to step 2 because the App was not able to scan the chip on my passport.
Tried at least 12 attempts!! Wasted time!
Had to remove phone case and place passport flat on a table, open, and know where to place the phone to get it to scan correctly. It ended up being middle right side inside of back cover. Unclear if this is a limitation of the passport, phone, or app.
Unable to use. Australia ETA app NFC worked fine for the same passport so it looks like an app issue as others have said.
It didn’t work with my passport NFC while it worked with my wife’s passport. It also didn’t work with United Airline boarding pass checkin just like other review on App Store. Nothing is working on this app. 😅
For newer passports with plastic page:
Scan the TOP back of your passport, hold it HORIZONTALLY towards the binding part and stay still until it reads 100%.
For older passports without the plastic page:
Open your passport to the very first page(page behind your picture), hold it horizontally and scan the top section towards the biding and stay still until it reads 100%.
This was done for our 4 passports and it scanned perfectly fine after struggling to find the right spot. I’m just sharing the sweet spots for US passports to scan. Hope this helps!
I read on Reddit to hold the US passport horizontally, open and scan back of passport page from the inside, slowly by the binding. Hold still when it starts running through % upload (no vibration will happen) and it registered immediately. Good luck.
