Homey Pad used to take over all audio, which wasn't very polite. Now Homey Pad will play nicely and mix with other audio playing on the device.

Created a new logo for the app. Tweaked the colors for major and minor to be more vibrant and align with popular emoji colors in the public domain. Fixed bug that darkened the small keys in the piano layout while using the subtle palette.

Changed the month labels. Now A / 440 Hz is Jan so that we can clearly see the benefit of modulo 12 math at the heart of music theory. Rearranged the order of the note labels. Now the accidental and octave choices are right below the letter choice so that the connection is more obvious. Added one more row in isomorphic layout so that the entire MIDI range is visible.

The colors of the home pitch selector will now match the colors of the currently selected layout. There is a new reset button on the tonic selector (replacing the old palette button) that will reset the home pitch to middle C with upward pitch motion. Fixed a nasty bug that would crash the app if pitch direction was change above or below the safe MIDI range. New default colors for the piano and symmetric layouts.

Added a note label option to show the relative position of each fundamental tone on the human basilar membrane, oriented from the basal side of the cochlea so that relative position within the inner ear increases with increasing wavelength.

Added note labels with units for period in milliseconds and wavelength in meters. Changed the icon for frequency. Added units of Hz for frequency. Added a pentagon to plot labels to indicate pentatonic modes.

Homey Pad now has new layouts for piano, guitar, bass guitar, banjo, violin / mandolin and cello along with the existing layouts for monochord and the Homey Pad symmetric layout. Homey Pad now allows you to choose among three color palettes for the keyboard and the home selector: subtle loud  ebony and ivory Homey Pad now has many new types of note labels from traditional music theory, digital music and music perception and cognition , including: traditional letters fixed do picker for accidentals: flats or sharps octave numbers MIDI fundamental frequency diatonic mode diatonic mode plots months Homey symbols interval shorthand movable do roman numerals scale degrees integers Homey Pad now has two ways to change pitch direction in the Home picker by tapping the octave above or below the current home pitch the explicit up or down toggle that is always visible in the header Homey Pad no longer includes the sample music player

Instead of specifying the tonic pitch class generally, like any C, Homey Pad now allows the musician to specify which specific pitch is the tonic pitch, like C4. Based on which column the selected tonic pitch is on the screen, Homey Pad will infer upward versus downward pitch direction. Homey Pad now sends the tonic pitch over MIDI anytime it changes and with every noteOn command.

Description of Homey Pad

Homey Pad is a musical instrument that allows beginner and expert music makers to embody the underlying beauty of music so that they focus on creatively expressing themselves. Played standalone, Homey Pad sounds like a grand piano. Plugged into GarageBand, Logic Pro or any other DAW it can sound like any software instrument. Homey Pad is designed the way music really works with a mirror symmetrical layout, icons representing consonance and dissonance and colors representing the major and minor modes. Each type of chord is played with the same hand position for all home and scale pitches. Because Homey Pad is aware of the home pitch, it is easy for music makers to see the character of every pitch as they play. Changing among relative modes with Homey Pad is like turning on an X-Ray machine that allows music makers to see how the character of pitches changes as the home pitch changes. A piano overlay makes it easy to understand classical notation, collaborate with other musicians and move musical ideas among various musical instruments. Get started by listening, watching and playing along as Homey Pad performs example songs and scales.

Reviews of Homey Pad

  • Intuitive and great for new learners!

I love this app. The ability to toggle between the different key layouts and adjust the color coding and labeling to your preferences/skill level makes it versatile and usable for every musician.

As a former piano player, I found myself referring to the home pitch symbol as the strongest point of reference, but I would love to see how a new player would approach the layout.

Excited to follow the trajectory this app takes!
