  • Disaster App for ALL Japan TV Viewers

Whoever made the decision thinking that switching Japan TV to JME has majorly inconvenienced tens of thousands of users, and I don’t foresee this platform surviving unless significant improvements are made. There is NO recording option on this app, so you will never get to watch anything you used to watch recorded on this new platform. It would be a significant improvement if JME allows for retroactive viewing of shows—not just select shows that are hardly interesting. Also, this was deceptive advertising, initially telling customers that they can watch Japanese TV with their smart TVs. Well, guess what: if you have an LG TV like many, you will need to purchase a NEW television set that is either Apple TV or Amazon Fire just to pay $25 a month to watch unrecordable Japanese TV. If you have an LG, JME has disabled screen mirroring, so you cannot screen mirror: you will have to purchase a brand new TV. The main demographic of TV Japan users are elderly viewers; unless they had someone to assist them with this platform, NHK will alienate their elderly Japanese viewers in America. Good luck calling them. Their phones are disconnected, and they are deleting negative reviews on Facebook. JME is disappointing, deceptive, and a terrible quality product with equally untrustworthy service that will alienate users unless a major overhaul is done to prioritize former TV Japan customers.

  • Needs improvement

Now that TV Japan is ending its service, I’m learning how to navigate this and so far I’m very disappointed. “Search” function is very buggy so I have to go through schedule to find the shows I want. There is no “On Demand” for daily shows like Asa-Ichi or Asa-Dra, and for the news programs I have to go to NHK World Japan website to watch on demand. If you just want to watch some popular drama series or movies this might be good enough, but as of now (3/30/24) both the web and app need a lot more updates.

  • Can’t record anything

My mom can now only watch anything that isn’t a drama live so this is a considerable downgrade. Please add the shows that aren’t dramas or allow people to record.

The UI is also rather cumbersome. You can’t just tap to pause when using your phone as the remote on the Apple TV, and the overlay won’t go away unless you swipe up to unselect the overlay buttons.

  • Could be great but…

This service is replacing TV Japan. It has potential but unfortunately I cannot endorse it at this time. I am using the Apple TV app to watch content and the overlay that gives you the option to rewind/fast forward does NOT go away. It is in the middle of the screen so it is difficult to watch anything. I hope they can fix this issue soon. If not, I will not be subscribing once my free trial is complete.

  • I want to record shows to watch later.

I am very sorry that I can’t watch TV Japan on TV anymore because I have recorded shows to watch later so that I don’t miss any my favorite ones, but now it must be difficult to watch them on time. It is not just a big screen, but there’s more option to watch and enjoy them on TV.
  • Please fix the overlay on Apple TV!

The gray overlay on Apple TV doesn’t go away; this is the overlay that shows “pause” or rollback 10 sec, etc. Please fix this! Thank you.
  • Not good for most elderly viewers

I was shocked to find the decision to move TV Japan from cable to online or App view only given that most of the viewers are elderly. If that was the case at the very least JME should have perfected the app before making the decision cutting off cable service completely. For non-PC or app users the options to view and app options are limited.

  • Poor library, no ability to record

This is a terrible replacement for TV Japan. No ability to record shows, and the content library is meager. Please allow to play back live shows for a week at least. I used to pay $200 a month for cable just to watch TV Japan, now I might not even pay $25 a month for JME.
  • Record option

This service is supposed to be a replacement for TV Japan and dlibrary Japan. Main reason why I was getting TV Japan was to watch news. I could record those news and I could watch them when I come back home from work. Now I don’t have that option. It would be nice if you could watch any programs within some certain time line or add the recording option.

  • I want to pay you for sumo!

The initial trial is appreciated to try the service. Currently live streams are somewhat unreliable and disconnects every 15 minutes to one hour (at least on Apple TV) necessitating a reload. For on demand programs where I can resume, this is tolerable, but it makes it difficult to enjoy live content. The gray overlay on Apple TV never seems to goes away, either, even when the controls are hidden. I know there are still growing pains.

I recognize this may be a nightmare of rights negotiation, but only making the full broadcast of live sumo available live makes it difficult to watch in the United States. A limited replay window of the past 4-24 hours of live broadcasts would go a long way to making this an easy to recommend option I would happily pay for just to watch Grand Sumo legally. The joy of following sport is to be able to watch it as close to real time as possible. The time shifted rebroadcast may help, but the lack of DVR capability is a big step down from Japan TV’s flexibility. Please consider this.
